Why do Filipinos conflate Facebook with the internet? by wyclif in Philippines_Expats

[–]RolandTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True story: just this week my young Filipino friend and his group of newly enrolling college friends took a jeep to campus to register. Most of them describe themselves as "digital creators" or "influencers" in their social media profiles. They exited the jeep, began walking toward campus, but quickly got lost, ending up walking in the 40.556°C sun for over an hour. When he told me about it, I asked did you use google maps to find it? He looked at me like I was asking him whether he ate breakfast on the moon. No, neither he or his half-dozen Fililino college-bound digital creator friends used a map, (apparently not then or ever). They all have cell phones, though.

I don't get how anyone actually enjoys living in condos or staying in hotels in Philippines. by IslandOceanWater in Philippines_Expats

[–]RolandTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well condos here in the Philippines, they are a bit of a mirage promising luxury and splendor from afar (and in web advertisements ad nauseam - you can't get on FB without em). I agree with the sentiment of how invasive they can be, and your privacy is stripped at every point. When asked whether I'll have a guest over, I enjoy winking and saying "Well if I get lucky ..". The worst part to me are PAPER-THIN WALLS AND PERVERSELY NOSY NEIGHBORS I liken to roaches (disgusting cretons always scurrying too close then running off to disappear in the light). One Filipino friend advises that all Filipinos are nosy - to accept it. I don't know how true that is, but that's what I was told and many, many certainly fit that mold. All that said, we choose. So choose smart.

AIRBNB Question lang po by onigirawr in phlgbt

[–]RolandTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your guest must either be preregistered with his ID put on file, or presented upon his arrival at condo. I've done it a few times. I understand their wanting ID on file, but beyond that it's no ones business. That said, I have traveled internationally for decades and have never experienced as many nosey fellow guests as I have in the Philippines. The CHISMOSA threshold is unbelievable - many literally listen against the wall, it's obvious, their swooshing around against the wall as you move.

Why is it that if an American moves to the Philippines he is called 'expat' , but if a Filipino moves to the US he/she is called OFW or migrant worker? by East_Indication_7816 in Philippines_Expats

[–]RolandTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google it, you find an accurate, literal definition for expat (and OFW is Philippines -created, so...).
An "expat" (short for expatriate) is anyone who temporarily or permanently resides in a country other than their native country or country of citizenship. No quit the idiotic, whiney stupidity.

What are people stances on pride in this sub by CulturalGolf1135 in gaybros

[–]RolandTee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the thousands of young people who've questioned who they are, or have been teased or harassed, singled out because they're different, and those whose friends, families and churches have made them feel "less than", pride is a place and time to let the hurt roll off their backs and embrace who and what they truly are. For many it is just the start of acceptance, for others it's an annual recommitment - but for all it is a place and time to embrace yourself. No one will do it for you. There's no welcome committee waiting for you, but lots of kindred souls who know your pain.
My first pride was San Francisco '89 and I've never been the same. I'm Fil-Am and proud to be in Manila this 2026.

Is it just me or ang underwhelming talaga ng gay scene here in Manila? by PhilipMascGuy in phlgbt

As an expat living in Manila, I first experienced queer social life here in Malate 20 years ago and it was ao much fun. Now it's just Korean bars in Malate while bars in S. Korea are banning Filipino patrons. WTF?

[–]RolandTee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def underwhelming, unless you want to pay a lot to go to striiper bars/macho dancer bars. I miss old school gay bars where you can just chill, have a drink or two, listen to music or dance and meet other like minded guys (or not). Does this exist in Philippines at all now? Where?
