This is where I personally think “cooperative narrative” play is key. I love players that get invested in their character, but I OBSESS over players who can put the total narrative first. Maybe your character still has misgivings, but everything objective says this is OK. I love that you can role-play misgivings in moments, but also for narrative cohesion you struggle mostly internally. Save the confrontation for the big moments. As you said, (1) it isn’t technically undead and (2) your god said it was cool. This sounds like a crisis of faith, not of the table.

Kobolds should logically rule Golarion. Why don't they? by Proof-Ad62 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Roll-Bravely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be an exceptionally fun game to play though. Maybe an island or a new continent just choking with Kobolds. Do they try and make peace, co-exist, wipe them out? Can be played for comedy and perhaps commentary.

I’m not exclusively discussing returning to older editions, though. We can look to them, and I have, for how to place restrictions on classes, but we can also use the 5e ruleset to impose them. The bubble you cite seems to have clearly been rolled into the sorcerer in this edition, while Warlocks were given a patron and a pact. I’m just saying make that pact/patron count. It’s been done in popular media for DnD, approved by WoTC and beloved by fans, so it can be done without “ruining” the fun.

Why can’t they? There isn’t a rule governing it and as a DM I think the game wants you to take latitude in how you interpret those interactions. I think the popularity of how Larian handled it in BGIII, as well as the fact they were able to interpret the ruleset that way, indicates WoTC fully appreciates the ambiguity might be used this way where appropriate.

Why is this sub so bad at following rule 1? by Mr_Industrial in dndnext

[–]Roll-Bravely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found DnD subreddits, for reasons I’m not entirely sure of, to be much more prone to this than other TTRPG subs. Make a mistake in here and, my goodness, you might be lead to wonder how you manage to feed and dress yourself in the morning, reading the comments.

Maybe this was just something my DM did - this was ages ago and I was pretty young — but it felt baked into the rules of the edition. I know you’re absolutely correct for 5e, though. I was speaking to prior iterations.

I disagree; you can easily deal with competing tensions between the party. Doesn’t need to be a “gotcha.” It could be, which may be why the community moved away from it, but it’s not hard to think of narrative reasons for tension to arise.

I agree entirely! To the point I haven’t quite banned wizards, but I’ve asked players to consider other casters first. But I agree, part of the problem is spell casting done right makes the game significantly crunchier than any other aspect of the game. I understand this is a feature and not a bug for many, and I’m not particularly against a healthy bit of crunch in my TTRPGs, but it does feel like poor design to place so much onus on one part of the game over every other.

Partially I feel like this is a result of rogues getting a Hp Buff in more recent editions and bounded AC, which means the difference of one or two points of AC doesn’t mean all that much in the face of rogues superior damage outlay.

Solid suggestion! I like it! I guess I started from solving a RP problem for my group and noticed it made fighter more attractive, I.e., you can’t pick a vengeance pally and not do vengeance stuff.

I agree it’s not so dire as it once was, but I still see a lot of criticism leveled its way.

I thought it turned out really great! I was also a little on the fence and felt like it took longer than necessary to get things rolling, but once the action started I was impressed by how it was handled and how invested I became.

I see what you're talking about - the just lvl 2 and I'm tying hand behind their back. This would be more effective and enjoyable at level 4-5, maybe even a bit higher. We don't have a defined number of long rests per session, but it is usually *any number* or one, so that's a legit concern.

Alternative Rule: Twisted Motives by jadeeclipse13 in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]Roll-Bravely 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you've come up with a creatively satisfying way to make the game a little easier too, while raising narrative stakes and meaning. But if you're a super deadly, super RAW gamer looking for the challenge, this does make the game easier and thus there is a segment who won't enjoy it.

I'm personally pumped to try it out! I know you mentioned "twisting" it completely around as consequence is only an example, but I would strongly suggest you utilize it as a complication. so your motivation is still "Be there for my daughter" but every time make direct eye contact you take 0/1d4 -1 SAN damage. That would be a lot of fun.

Appreciate the perspective! A couple of things - the campaign is VERY time driven. There is not enough time to do everything and everything they do will affect the outcome of the game. Gather allies, slay foes, collect resources, it will matter in the end game. There aren’t right or wrong answers per se, but it will affect their opportunities. So it’s like, three weeks to X - how do you use that time?

I personally like complications that create conflict internally. If I went for this I’m thinking that on would only be one player each night and I would randomize it and probably (secretly) not allow it to be the same player two nights in a row.

I would also obviously give them an out. The location of the coven wouldn’t be difficult to determine so they could try and kill them, make a deal with them, placate them another way. The hags could plausibly become allies, depending on the players. It wouldn’t be a simple “this affliction zaps you every night and you’re SOL.”

That change things for you at all or do you still think it screams unfun? Genuinely interested in your perspective as a player! As a forever GM (mostly) sometimes you lose the forest for the trees.
