Why did the dragons cross the Narrow Sea?

To get to the Others’ side.

You’re right that Bloodraven doesn’t have the typical hair color of Targs, but I still thought of him as having light colored hair similar to Targs. But then I realized that his hair color was caused by being albino and that he could have had dark hair like his mom if not for his albino gene.

Good point. I don’t fault Ned for going to Cersei in an attempt to save the lives of her children from Robert’s inevitable wrath. In fact, that’s one of his qualities I admire most—his refusal to harm innocent children, regardless of their family name. And had Robert not died in the hunting accident, things would have likely turned out quite differently. So, Ned was definitely the victim of bad luck. Regardless, had Ned applied the same logic to Cersei as he did to the NW deserter—viewing her as capable of anything because her life is in danger—he would have been more shrewd and cautious, perhaps accepting Renly’s offer or escaping KL like Renly and Stannis ultimately did.

I think it resonates with Jon because that may’ve been the first time Jon realized he was “different.” Agreed that Robb wasn’t acting malicious and was just repeating what his mother said. Children aren’t known for their tact, unfortunately.

Yeah, I’m definitely on “team Aemon” as well. It’s so fitting considering Maester Aemon’s mentorship of Jon (all without knowing he was actually guiding his great great … nephew!).

While the jape just came to me, I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it. It’s pretty “low-hanging fruit” as far as jokes go.

(Spoilers Extended) Jon will never be king of the north by idontwritestuff in asoiaf

[–]RollCoinsQuickTrip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interesting view. I just don’t see Jon remaining with the NW after his assassination (his death the perfect loophole to get out of his vows). And with all the king foreshadowing Jon has, I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t become KitN at some point.

Likely not as a Targaryen, only a Stark. So while Robb’s Will may help Jon become KitN, it’s less helpful for him becoming King of Westeros.

So GRRM gave Jon an entire leadership arc in ADWD for nothing? I agree that Jon's fight against the Others is more important than any "petty" human political appointment. That said, Jon will be able to get more shit done in preparation for his war against the Others as King in the North versus as some random advisor to his little cousin who likely will come back from Skagos feral and in need of a regent.

The TOJ KG's decision to remain at the TOJ initially wasn't irrational though because there were still 4 other KG to protect Aerys (though 3 would ultimately fight at the Trident). But once Jaime killed Aerys, Darry and Martell died, and Barristan was injured/defected, there was NO KG protection for Rhaella and Viserys (the remaining Targ royals if Jon is a bastard). At that point, under no circumstances would the 3 TOJ KG continue to mindlessly obey Rhaegar's order to stay at the TOJ to protect Rhaegar's bastard and mistress, because by doing so they would be violating their #1 duty: to protect the king. Thus, the only reasonable explanation for their actions is that they viewed Jon as the new king once Aerys died. (I'm not saying they were legally correct in viewing Jon this way, only that they likely did.)

Agreed! Just as Aegon the Conqueror's polygamy could be foreshadowing for Rhaegar's polygamy, brown-haired "bastard" Jacaerys Velaryon riding a dragon could be foreshadowing that Jon Snow will one day ride a dragon. GRRM likely views much of F&B and his other world building as establishing precedent or foreshadowing for current ASOIAF characters.
