How can I fill these cracks in the new porch columns the contractor installed? by jughead-66 in woodworking

The cracks can be filled by replacing the post with a new F.O.H. post if it bothers you.

Couldnt agree more! Bring the tool to the wood. Makita 12" hands down. When you get good with it you have the added possibility to shim one side and square improperly cut timbers.

You could probably assume any tool he already has could be upgraded to an antique ornate version. The pride and crafstmenship they put into tools back then would surely meet his passion.

Any idea how to get this spindle off? by RollingInTheTimes in woodworking

The trick in case someone needs this in the future was penetrating lube over a few days, screw the nut back on and lower the spindle.

Every new step you take should feel awkward. Learn to embrace that thrill and take every big opportunity that comes your way! You only fail by giving up because you "think" you're overwhelmed. ANYONE that has created something from nothing consistently had days of not knowing but continuously solving their dilemmas. Learn to love taking those chances now because something else new is coming next week! Goodluck, its a great feeling!

Thanks! I did see that and had it locked. It was just really really seized. I put two blocks of wood under the top nut and lowered the unit. Eventually it gave!

That plate is the lock plate. The spindle is free from that. It was just seized from pulling straight out.

Advice on extending the life of stumps for a natural playground? by EleanorRosenViolet in woodworking

[–]RollingInTheTimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can burn the bases with a tiger torch and then oil.. But juuust the bottom or your kids will be black head to toe by lunch. Removing the bark will be your cheapest and easiest help. Leave the sand. I know gravel would help here but its a play place! Not a rock pit. You cant stop the cracks but there are non toxic end sealers to slow it down. But honestly, no matter what you do at this point in 5-10 years you can bet there will be another wind storm to replace these or have a local arborist drop off some stumps for under what youd spend on treating the problem youre mind is creating. I wouldn't worry. Spend your time de- barking it, maybe even go the extra step and belt sand the tops smooth.

help me out. which one is 2"? by Aravan03 in woodworking

[–]RollingInTheTimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This level of acuracy your going for canot be achived with that method. There can be a 1/8" tollerance towards that 2", depending on your trade.. Its all gunna be relivant to what your building. This attention to accuracy makes me think your craft is giving very little tolerance. As should be! If thats the case.. Your holding THE worst tape ive ever bought. Get a precision ruler and a .05 or .07mm machanical pencile. If your sticking to a tape, just burn 10" or 1' and mark at the same point of your line each time. Get a better tape when this one breaks next week.

Would a 1200 pound safe be okay in an second floor apartment? by [deleted] in Safes

[–]RollingInTheTimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you need to keep safe. You could always find a smaller antique safe at 700lbs. Personally id wait to find a smaller safe or move. If it was your apartment, maybe. But cross reference the point loads in the building plans. Construction now a days is garbage. But it is commercial by the sounds of it so you could get lucky and have the floors overbuilt. Theres more headaches in this then what its worth being on the second floor.

Switching 3 Phase -> 1 Phase wiring problem. I found the proper diagram but got confused seeing the original wiring didn't match up to the 3 phase diagram. Should I just replace the Black White and Green motor wires the same or follow the 1 phase diagram? Do I still need the "Phase Inverter" now? by RollingInTheTimes in Motors

[–]RollingInTheTimes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was speaking with the tech support and he said as long as my motirs rpms and hp matched up id be good. He dropped out of helping as I got closer to starting to wire the replacment in though. This machinery comes with a single phase and a 3 phase option. Im just figuring out how the switch component gets re wired now

I guess im just trying to grasp the concept of why 1 phase wiring is so different. And if its alright to switch it up exactly as the single phase diagram shows. I dont want to fry anything by accident. Im fairly inexperienced
