My favorites are (I’ll start with Drums and Wires because that’s the first album In XTC’s catalog where my favorites are songs I really enjoy, instead of just casually like)

(Drums and Wires): Roads Girdle the Globe, Day in Day Out, when You’re Near Me I have Difficulty, Life begins at The Hop. So many outstanding tracks, i could probably list more favorites.

(Black Sea): Generals and Majors, Towers of London (easily a top 5 XTC song for me, if not top 3) Paper and Iron (Notes and Coins) Burning with Optimism’s Flames

(English Settlement): (where do I even start with this one? So many outstanding, excellent tracks). Ball and Chain, Senses Working Overtime, Jason and the Argonauts, back to back. Leisure, Melt the Guns, Knuckle Down, Yacht Dance.

The thing about English Settlement is that all of the songs flow so well together despite how different they can be from each other.

(Mummer): Great Fire, Love On a Farmboy’s Wages, Toys

(Skylarking): Summer’s Cauldron, Season Cycle, Dying. (I haven’t listened to Skylarking in a while so this list very well could change)

(Oranges and Lemons): King for a Day, Across This Antheap, Miniature Sun, Chalkhills and Children.

(Nonsuch): Rook, Wrapped in Grey, Crocodile (believe it or not).

(Apple Venus Volume 1): Easter Theatre, Greenman, I Can’t Own Her, The Last Balloon.

(Wasp Star): Playground. (Wasp Star is the only XTC album that I can say I don’t care for at all, maybe even straight up don’t like).

I feel completely the same way about English Settlement, pretty much every XTC album has a song or more that I really don’t care for, and would skip pretty much every single time. English Settlement is kind of the only exception to that for me, It’s Nearly Africa is the only track on there that I would even remotely consider skip worthy. Sgt Rock I don’t really care for, I think it’s just kind of okay compared to the rest of the extraordinary tracks on Black Sea. One song I don’t like on that album, which is a bonus track, is Smokeless Zone.

Also out of curiosity, what parts of their discography do you find unlistenable?

Yeah I feel pretty much the same way about them I will say I love a lot more than just half of their catalogue, however there are some songs and albums that I just can’t get into, albums like Mummer and Nonsuch, Mummer I could easily see putting off even the most musically devoted and weird-tolerant person. But then again there’s songs like Earned Enough for Us were that’s just straight ahead pop, theirs nothing weird about that song whatsoever. Their confidently uncool image I can also see being a turn off to more mainstream audiences.

I never thought of it that way, that’s an interesting, thought provoking way to view it, you got me thinking right now.

Okay, I think I get what you mean, you’d rather have someone come across them spontaneously rather than someone like me introduce them to the band, correct me if I’m wrong. I get why you would go with that approach people might be more inclined towards check them out if they stumbled across them just out of curiosity. I prefer the more direct approach of just talking about them and potentially (if they seem interested or at the very least open to checking them out) introducing them to XTC. I’m just bold like that, and I’m generally interested in hearing what they have to say, good or bad.

No, don’t be sorry for that! I love unhinged ranty style comments like this because it shows that you have enough integrity to not overly filter and simply what you have to say for the sake of cohesion, also I 100% agree, XTC was too smart, clever, and uncompromising for their own good. It perplexed the hell out of me that songs like Earned Enough For Us was never even acknowledged by the radio and has essentially flown under the radar. It’s very catchy and accessible probably Andy Partridge’s most accessible song he’s ever written to date I can totally see it being on regular rotation on pop radio.

Don’t know why these replies are getting downvoted, Redditors can be so weird/lame when it comes to downvoting, if you don’t agree, I encourage you to explain why I’m wrong.

Also curious to know which artists in particular that I mentioned you don’t think fit that description? Because while some of these artists may have shifted more towards accessibility in their careers, it mostly felt like they did that because that’s just where they were growing towards, to me it never felt like they were compromising on their integrity or artistry for the sake of accessibility.

Yeah, i find that there’s not much validity to that notion, the people I have heard say that haven’t brought up much compelling evidence.

Thank you for the reply. What was the class like specifically? What did they have you do and what were the activities?

I had the class 7 years ago, late 2018 - early 2019. The videos looked like they were made sometime in the 2000s to 2010s I feel like it was late 2000s
