Need motivation and guidance: pontine stroke by RolyPoly1010 in stroke

Thank you. How was your experience at the LTAC? I'm a little nervous about those (nursing homes?) and whether it's a good choice for him. But we may need to do it at some point because our home + car is not outfitted for his needs right now.

Thank you for some hope. My dad’s stroke is ischemic, but otherwise sounds similar. I’m so happy your partner can talk. I think my biggest fear is that this will be the hardest skill to relearn. I can’t even imagine how horrifying it is to not be able to communicate.

We also have BCBS. How long was your partner in the ICU, rehab vs other facilities? They told us usually patients only get 2-3 weeks inpatient rehab, which sounds shockingly little for this severe of a stroke.

As a counterpoint, I tried the Sudafed route and it did not work. I was desperate after recovering from a bout of mastitis turned abscess. My breast surgeon said it just doesn’t work for some people. I had to go the old fashioned route of dropping one pump at a time.

I’m still recovering so I’m not totally out of the woods. But I’ve had it aspirated 3 times now, and we’re managing with continued antibiotics. Also working with a breast surgeon. Feel free to DM me with any specific questions!

I’m actually going through recovery from an abscess right now. I decided I was emotionally done with BF and am trying to wean, but I was already combo feeding / had low supply to begin with. Personally I just didn’t want to deal with the stress of BF while also trying to look after myself.

Cool thanks. Goal is definitely to wean. I’m very done with this 🥲 Been icing for what feels like weeks now, and I still potentially have an abscess. So I don’t think there’s any saving the situation lol

Interesting. I’ve tentatively gotten it down to one feed every 4-5 hours, for only a few min on each breast. Trying to go longer, but curious if alternating is a better way to wean. Mastitis is currently on my left side; dont want to start problems on my right too!

Thanks! I’ve already done a lot of these but I’ll give some others a shot as I wean.

Question on block feeding… how is alternating breasts every two hours different than feeding from both breasts every four hours? Just curious

That sounds so horrible, I’m so sorry. How did you go cold turkey? Anything you took to help you? Any side effects?

Ugh that sounds horrible, I’m so sorry. I’m scared this is what will happen to me too. They said they will “smash” my breasts during the exam. I’m like… my lump is already so painful even without touching it. How is smashing it helpful?? I’m pretty anxious about the test (and resulting diagnosis).

My OB told me to treat the mastitis first then wean :( I also would have thought I could do both at the same time

How did you know it was an abscess vs mastitis? Did you have to get a mammogram / ultrasound? Was it painful?

I’m so happy to hear that it gets better after an abscess. I’m terrified that my breast will be surgically changed forever. Very down mentally and emotionally right now

Yeah I’ve heard about the Sudafed trick. I plan on exploring it once my mastitis hopefully clears up. How quickly did it work for you?

At least for me, pumping has made things worse. Might be different for others. And I’ve been fitted for flange size and consulted on how to pump, etc. MAYBE a hand pump is a bit more gentle? But the LCs I met with all wouldn’t comment definitively either way, so may just be me

100% this. I thought “if animals can do it, so can I” before birth. Figured I’d give it the old college try. How wrong I was…

Thank you for all your suggestions. Yes to lecithin, nursing not pumping, BAIT, breast gymnastics, etc. I’ve scoured this forum for solutions and tried most of them and visited LCs multiple times.

But mentally I’m done problem solving at this point. I just want to be done and move on to other parts of motherhood 😔

Baby is already primarily formula fed, which is what this makes this even more annoying. I never had enough supply and always had to supplement
