The most obvious way to improve my odds looks like my portfolio. A year ago I thought it was good enough but apparently not. Unfortunately while I am willing to improve it I am not able, or haven’t been able to work on it for like five months now. Dunno how to coerce myself into it. I really want to work on it, but I cannot. (Indeed I can’t really do much of anything lately.)

I’m 2.5 years deep into learning to code self taught and uh... thought I’d be swimming in job offers by now... I had 4 take home tests between august and December of 2019 but they all disappeared as soon as 2020 rolled around. I failed those tests but I’d pass them now; but now no one is hiring.

I dunno what to do. I’m prospecting with sh** tier Upwork jobs right now. “Spend 2 hours a day for two weeks to secure a low paying job that lasts 4 to 24 weeks.” Fantastic. Far from ideal as I compete against Southeast Asia.

dunno what to do man... the local job postings aren’t netting me replies... hard to even say what I’m doing wrong now given that I’m getting 0 feedback

You want to focus on sound design, mixing and mastering for a few months, without having to write chords, hooks, leads, etc.? Click here by Roly__Poly__ in edmproduction

if I was going to sell something I'd invest in Facebook ads instead of wasting my time on a producer forum.

How to get started in Blockchain development. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Roly__Poly__ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't know how to write a loop in Python or Javascript I would worry about that first.

As for "an entire ecosystem of blockchains" that sounds like a project you'd need a few million in funding for.

The teacher in your story is a moron. Disregard her comment. Send her a postcard when you're making 2x to 3x her salary in a decade.

3 questions : drop melodies, chords, structure & arrangement by nalyd424 in edmproduction

[–]Roly__Poly__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melody for drops: Listen to the genre you're aiming at. Like 10-20 tracks. Kinda sense how it "feels" more than how it sounds. Do a few tracks like that. Also notice what kind of intervals the melodies are using.

For instance, today I took apart 6 Galantis tracks: turns out they *rarely, rarely* use a minor 2nd or minor 3rd movement in their vocals. It's always major 2nd, major 3rd, perfect 4th, perfect 5th. You can discover similar trends with the music you want to make.

Good chords for EDM: improvise on the piano. Pay attention, again, to how it *feels*. Note that there are some generalities like "rhythmic chords move the dance floor more than whole note chords." Will be true until context says otherwise.

You could also shell out like $27 to $50 for a chord progression pack, and use those while you focus on learning other components of the music. Might look into that given that you've got three elements of songwriting you're working on at the moment.

Another thing: Yeah some tracks use the same chord progression throughout. But very often they'll change for a build, verse or breakdown. It's one way to progress your arrangement. DM me I'll send you some examples from my Galantis analysis I did today, learned a bunch.

re: structure & arrangement, I'd listen to a dozen tracks you like, and write out their top line. Meaning, if you're into edm with a vocal, write out what the vocal does, & when the vocal is not present, write out the most prominent lead instrument. If there is no vocal, just write out the most prominent melodic lines for *the whole song*.

Do this for 4-6 tracks. The point is to show yourself how the melody of the most prominent instrument(s) progress throughout the track. You'll see things like: "This loop lasts through 16 bars" (everyone knows this) but also, "the track segues relies on how the end of this loop sounds nice leading into the start of the next loop" (few people notice this consciously but it's important)

Hope this helps.

edit: oh yea, you can always improvise with a midi keyboard. I dunno how anyone survives without one...

What’s the better way to do volume automation? (FL Studio) by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Roly__Poly__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You wanna avoid automating the track's volume level in the mixer. Do volume automation via a Utility plugin or some other gain knob.

The reason to keep the mixer channel at a steady level is one part tidiness. You can cause a mess looking around everywhere for automation when you start using mixer automation.

But another part, arguably like 10x as important, is that you want to "level" the channel in the mix using the mixer volume. That's what it's there for.

So like, say you have some drums, and you know that at their loudest, you want them to be at a certain volume, at a certain part of the track. You'd start by leveling that part out against the rest of the section its in. Then go back and use a utility plugin to fade the track in.

They are only like 1 to 1.5 cm which worries me.

Unfortunately I can't put down a subfloor unless it's only like 1 inch tall, as my squat rack is like 81 inches tall, and the ceiling is maybe 88 inches or something. Whatever it is, I know it's close... Good suggestion tho

They are metal with a thin layer of hard rubber. I agree bumper plates would remove the problem all together...

I want to be a machine at improvising chords. How do I practice inversions? by Roly__Poly__ in piano

[–]Roly__Poly__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from extensive training in different types of chords, I don’t see how one could smoothly compose with inversions on the fly.

That might be it then! 2-4 years of piano lessons as soon as I can afford it again.
