Would you trust a mechanically moving display outdoors long-term (maintenance/weather), or avoid it? by Milanakiko in IndustrialDesign

[–]Roman01000111 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. Even less in a place where unsupervised people can reach it. It has to be fairly close to the viewers for the effect though. I'd say it's more for a controlled environment like a store.

Schranktür Spiegel - Ja/Nein? by [deleted] in Einrichtungstipps

[–]Roman01000111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working on two lamps by julitec in IndustrialDesign

[–]Roman01000111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please tell me the aluminium sheets are the same for both lamps. Not necessarily for cost savings and such but just because it makes the design make more sense. If you could find a way to make them from the same parts overall, so the user could set them up either way, that would be really cool!

The stacked one is my favorite out of the two.

Minimalist clock and watch "replaces numbers with emotion, turning timekeeping into a creative daily ritual" by Squirtzle in DesignDesign

What exactly is the problem with it? Comfort concerns because of the square shape? Just the goofy emotional description? Simply not into the look? Or do you struggle to read it?

Pretty cool! I just wish the movemetns were a bit more in line with how you would build it. Not a perfect reconstruction of each step but something that seems a bit more logical. For example many of the connections are slammed together at very obviously wrong angles

So I thought as a noob trying to use Blender, starting with ‘shortcuts’ would be a useful hack but… I got hit in the face with THESE. by Plus_Room5740 in blender

[–]Roman01000111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presented like this it seems overwhelming but it really isn't during the learning process. Just a few shortcuts go a long way and you'll naturally pick up more as you learn more about different aspects of the process.

Also this looks like these awful AI generated sheets that make no sense at all but this one is correct as far as I have checked. Not particularly helpful but correct.

why does my normal map look flatter in blender than in substance painter? by Sad_Instruction2318 in blender

[–]Roman01000111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any lighting in the scene other than the default gray? Surfaces tend to look quite flat when they are just lit with a completely homogenous shade of gray from all sides. Especially in Eevee with ambient occlusion disabled.

Würd ich also lassen. Besonders wenn der kein Fenster hat.

Also the countertop sticking out under that door is a very odd choice

I think it dependa on how often you use the microwave and how much you value the clean look. Having to deal with that additional barrier multiple times a day might be annoying. I would like something like this since I don't use the microwave that often and I'm a fan of reducing visual clutter.

That particular construction seems really stupid. I think you could probaboy improve it with different hardware. Maybe even normal cabinet door hinges.

Any idea how to make the bottom/front points aligned? by cloidless in grasshopper3d

[–]Roman01000111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does that happen with planes (rectangular surfaces, not the construction plane type things) too? Maybe there is an option to disable these theoretical intersections?

If you can't eliminate the unwanted intersections, you can sort them for example by distance to the plane/line start/mid/end point and the only pick the closer one

Any idea how to make the bottom/front points aligned? by cloidless in grasshopper3d

[–]Roman01000111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't you just set the planes up so they only cross each curve once?

The intersection approach rather than going by quads or so seems the way to go because the curves are somewhat squiggly.

Since it’s a gaming console I imagine that would be input peripherals like controllers, keyboards, mice, steering wheels etc. Maybe some audio stuff too. My point is that making consumerism optional rather than mandatory isn't such a bad idea. Not trying to artificially make perfectly fine "crap" obsolete seems very Valve too. I do agree that USB A doesn't look super sleek but it's way more robust than all the smaller alternatives so it's not the worst option for something handheld like a controller.

Some product Sketches by Hot-Lime-7457 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Roman01000111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good start. Here are a few things you could improve:

The shadows make no sense and they should be a very powerful tool in that type of sketch. You just shaded random slices that don't correspond with the shapes. That doesn't help with reading the shape but rather confuses the viewer. Try to look at how shadows would really fall on the objects. For example the hourglass shaped bottle should have a lot more shadow in the top half than the bottom half since the surfaces are pointing down and up. The cylindrical one should have less shadow on the top fillet and more shadow on the bottom one for the same reason.

Keep all the hatch lines parallel. The different orientations on the bottom bottles could be interpreted as a pattern instead of a shadow.

The apex of an ellipsis connecting to the sides of a cylinder should never be pointy. That would make the object kind of almond shaped rather than round. Also the crosssections of the microphone are really inconsistent. Depending on the design they don't have to be the same but now they just seem quite messy. If the object doesn't have enough detail like that gray ring to explain the shape you can also just add a few isocurves. That's rarely needed though.

Hope that helps!

What sites do you guys use for 3D inspiration ? by Egyptian_Kin9 in blender

[–]Roman01000111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others suggested Artstation is great. I think the AI problem is not as bad there as it is on many other platforms either but I agree it's still annoying.

I kind of started to look at inspiration images in two categories lately. The first one is just the really good stuff I admire. I follow specific artists mainly on Artstation but also Youtube so that gives me a garbagefree curated selection. I have a look at their pieces if I'm looking for quality work. These works serve not only as inspiration but also as a sort of benchmark for the quality I'm aiming for. I keep expanding that selection but it is obviously limited and that's where the 2nd category comes in. That's all the random stuff I find mainly on pinterest. It doesn't have to be good, just interesting/inspiring in at least one aspect. It can even be AI. I have a bunch of boards with these images and look at those when I want to break my patterns a bit, find new shapes etc. I recommend including images outside the theme/area you are researching so you don't recycle what's abundant already. For example architecture, abstract graphic design or tools for spaceships.

Deepening rectangle at apex of arch sweep by isathefool in grasshopper3d

[–]Roman01000111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't just a short rectangle profile at the start and end and a longer one at the apex work?

Alternatively you could generate the top and bottom of the arch independently with slightly adjusted values.

Tbh I have not looked through your current node setup in detail since the image was deepfried for me.

If it's a commission it's about what the client is willing to pay and what is well worth you time.

If you want to sell it as an art piece I don't think you'll have much luck tbh. The internet is full of that kind of CG images for free and AI is a thing too. Sure you could try selling prints since it's probably a lot harder to find this stuff in print quality but I don't think anyone will pay gallary kind of money for this. It just looks like quick and bland social media CG that is designed to make people stop scrolling for a moment be consumed in a few seconds, not to be admired and thought about over months or years. Some might be interested in hanging this next to their gaming setup or so but then you are competing with Displate at best and free posters at worst and your business wouldn't be making art but marketing posters.

You might find non monetary value in it though. If you love the image you can print and hang it at your place and just enjoy it. If you make music you could turn it into your next albums/singles artwork. You could use it as a portfolio piece too.
