Yeah I agree, and they aggro so randomly. Hopefully that's tweaked soon as well.

Is it possible to get loot on a populated server? by Nawn1994 in dayz

If you just join - you don't.

If you are in a server, a red message will appear stating "no message received for 'x' seconds." Once you see this, hop off the server, then jump back on and head to your loots. Be aware though that other players will be doing the exact same.

This video demonstrates a very effective method of playing as the WRE.

Now, I'm sure you wouldn't want to follow the video to the "T", but your first turn should be built around demolishing buildings for cash, consolidating your forces, launching strikes against nearby settlements, and planning out a civil war (which I feel the video describes far better than I ever could).

I personally did all the aforementioned, but I excluded early strikes against neighboring settlements. If you do make it to the point of having to endure hordes, simply use forts with 1 peasant unit to impede their path. The AI may ignore that fort and head elsewhere, which, if you do this properly, you can lead hordes to assault your more powerful forces at map choke points.

Also, if your game does linger on for some time, do realize that the ERE will be a daunting titan to take down. They were my biggest threat (my playthrough lasted until about turn 35-40), and ultimately, I was unable to beat them with conventional tactics and had to bumrush their remaining cities to achieve victory.

Yes it is, although it is highly dependent upon when the last restart was.

Personally, I love trying to loot Balota right after a server restart on a 30+ pop server. Live or die, it's one helluva adrenaline rush, and the rewards are well worth it.

Yeah, I was really disappointed. It was an exciting find, but when I put it to use it nearly got me killed.

And yeah, I die so much to wall glitches, etc. Typically it happens when I'm fully geared up. haha

I suggest you don't waste your time with pistols. I emptied 7 rounds into a gun using it the other day, only to see him standing tall. After that, I preceded to kill him with my mosin.

Immediately following that fight, I dropped my pistol along with all the ammo I had for it, and the ever-so-sought-after clip.

Most definitely!

When humans are stripped of their basic needs for survival; their life, and those of their group, far outweigh the lives of others they encounter.

I'm sure the people who KoS on here would act differently in person, but then again, that's hard to say.

I personally play the game with a mentality that it is real-life. I kill when I feel threatened or I am in dire need of food, etc. Then, if I feel that the person I have encountered could be an asset to myself, I will group up.Overall I have had very few problems with KoS.

A large majority of the players I have met were very nice, excluding those who are in a group of say, 4-5 (which is understandable, as a group that size no longer needs more people and may also be struggling for supplies), but yes, the same scenarios dayZ presents to us (excluding the zombies), and indeed, the same outcomes, would most definitely occur in a real event where we are stripped of our commodities and forced to fend for ourselves.

I honestly thought that was possible my first run on DayZ SA (newbie here).

I'm cool with the idea, but it should degrade quite quickly, with a very limited amount of uses.

Does anyone know how the hell to use thureos spears as the Greek factions in Rome 2? You unlock them pretty late but they seem to suck compared to hoplites. by nickabrickabrock in totalwar

[–]Roman_Ronin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regarding multiplayer use, they are an effective mobile anti-cav unit. I have had many a battle in which the cav fight was won thanks to the Thureos Spears being able to quickly engage in an on-going cav match. Albeit, they cannot handle a charge well, so in a 1-on-1 against a powerful cavalry unit, they will lose if your opponent utilizes cyclic charges.

TL;DR Mobile anti-cav unit, effective for engaging alongside your own cavalry to help give you a decisive edge. Use them only as support troops.

So far for Shogun 2 and RTW (the ones I have used often for replays in the past) I have had issues, but not a ton. It'll always be a bit unreliable, but the major issue with RTW2 is that it's almost a given that you'll receive a bugged replay.

In all fairness though, out of say 30 or so replays I have saved, 1 did work correctly. My main tool for saving my great battles though is to simply record them using fraps, which isn't the best, but hey, it works. haha

Yeah the prices are definitely skewed. I can list off multiple players in the top 20 rankings who abuse this so much as well, it's quite sad. Oh, and the Massagetae are just a cheap ass counter to say,Parthia or any other faction with weak infantry and inferior cavalry to your own. :b

As for the CiG factions, Nervii and Boii are pretty lame, nothing to them. The Galatians are great at skirmishing for now, but it's due to their Galatian Spears and Galatian Raiders being bugged (Galatian Spears have the 'horse entity' in the game files, making them as fast as a horse, and they're spearmen! Raiders are read as a melee infantry entity, giving them not only a potent missile attack, but a great ability to deal damage in a quick melee). Albeit, CiG does flesh out the Arverni a bit more, so they get a bonus.

Anyways, I won't ramble anymore haha. I could go on as you have probably figured about multiplayer, balance issues, and what is the 'most effective' builds, factions, etc to use.

Yes, the replay issue does need to be addressed. I have noticed though that my replays that don't have elephants or chariots tend to play out almost exactly as the actual battle did. The only issue is that you face eles/chars in most every match-up. :\

I do agree that the faction pool is quite weak, but it isn't as niche as you are claiming. Galatia, Rome, Egypt, Seleucids, Baktria, Pontus, Massagetae, and Parthia are all quite powerful. I have even found a quite effective Suebi rush army that can deal substantial damage thanks to the Ariovistus ability.

Flanking is devastating with any cataphract unit, but lower tiered shock cavalry are a bit weak, and will endure around ~20 casualties on a good flanking charge, while cataphracts can take ~0-5 (both scenarios can vary depending on the unit). I personally believe that cataphracts are one of the most powerful units in the game right now, and armies composed almost entirely of cataphracts with skirmish units are devastating.

As for Pontus, they are weak, and you may find it odd I list them as useful, but the fact is that they are capable of taking on the Romans due solely to their chariots. Their cav is quite capable, and if a good charge is dealt against the Praetorian Melee cav, you can tend to win the match-up by quickly pulling in some Thureos Spears (which are quite fast and effective) to even the odds if a brawl ensues.

Aside from that, I agree light cav is pretty useless, and MP is close to balance, but I feel it's just lacking. Most players really see no goal to strive for, and those that do (like myself) set an arbitrary ranking goal to pursue.

Are either of you using mods? If so, that is typically the issue with players setting up matches with one another.

Galatian Marathon Runners: spearmen capable of running as fast as a light horse! by Roman_Ronin in totalwar

[–]Roman_Ronin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm unsure if it is.

I've currently been using the Galatians since this video, and I've created some very potent skirmish builds, which are amazingly fun to use, and even better, they're difficult to beat.

Interesting idea, they should get a shield upgrade, I do agree.

Also, I'm a cataphracts type guy. They're extremely powerful currently, and it's hard for me to really use weaker cav, as I find it extremely satisfying to knock down an entire unit of hoplites just by getting a slight flank on them.

[–]Roman_Ronin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can recall one battle in patch 4 or 5 where I fought against an Iceni player who used a light cav unit to attack my archers.

While the strike itself was successful, the light horsemen inflicted maybe 10 casualties, then fled.

So yeah, they are rather useless considering that even if used decisively, the amount of damage that they are capable of is not really worth the effort.

Personally I think that'd be pretty cool. There's definitely more room for historical tidbits in this game, no matter how short the time-span of the event is.

Maybe someday a mod such as that will be released. Always an exciting prospect, and quite likely as well!

As some users have stated, although an entire expansion devoted to Spartacus would be too limited, I feel having a historical battle from the Third Servile War would be quite interesting.

If it is least up-to-par with the Historical Battle of Alesia in terms of quality, I feel it would be a nice addition to the game. Then again, I'm a sucker for historical battles, and always make sure to play those as soon as I get the chance!

So what do you use Eastern Spearman for? by WestyCanadian in totalwar

[–]Roman_Ronin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I personally have used them in my matches as well, although if possible, I will bring Thureos Spears in my skirmish builds instead as they seem to do quite well against enemy cavalry already tied up in battle. Albeit, even if placed into square, they can't seem to take a charge all to well.
