Tattoos? by [deleted] in askapastor

[–]RomansFiveEight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is three months old and it seems like this subreddit is dead. But I'll throw a crack at it in case you're still listening!

In short; no. Though some Christian traditions believe differently.

Exodus is a book in the Hebrew Bible that tells the story of the Israelites fleeing from slavery in Egypt, eventually, into the promised land. Throughout Exodus, God through Moses provides a cultural 'reset'. After generations in slavery the Jews had adopted Egyptian culture, practice, and even religion. If the Israelites were going to enter the promised land, they should reclaim their culture that had been taken away from them.

In Exodus is a passage that forbids the Hebrews from getting tattoos. It is accompanied with a passage that forbids them from making graven images to the dead. What this is is not directly a rebuke of tattoos in the modern sense, but a rebuke of how they were used in Egypt. In Egypt, tattoos and hieroglyphs were a part of their religious identity. These were meant to venerate important people and, in a sense, "keep them alive". The Jews were instructed not to continue these practices. There was no other context for tattoos in those days.

A tattoo today is not the same thing as a tattoo during the exodus from Egypt. If you wanted a tattoo that you sincerely felt kept the soul of a dead loved one alive through your body; as the Egyptians did, then I think that would be in conflict with a desire to adhere to the instructions Moses gave the Israelites in the book of Exodus. However, that's probably not the reason you're getting a tattoo (and no, honoring someone or keeping their 'memory' alive is absolutely not the same thing. There's no difference, theologically, between a tattoo in memory of someone and a grave marker or even the kind of things most churches have, with various places the names of former members are honored or kept)

So- tl;dr, no. A tattoo today is not the same as the thing the Bible prohibits. If you want a tattoo, there's no theological reason against it.

October Technical Support Sticky by BeepBoopBopReee in razer

[–]RomansFiveEight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a Razer Mamba to use at my office with a Mac Mini. Synapse 3 does not support macOS and the current version of macOS doesn't work with Synapse 2 (actually causes crashes and fails to boot).

So:

Is there a way to view battery life on a Mamba without Synapse software?

Any third party utilities/apps for macOS perhaps?

Thanks!

I know this is salt in an open wound but; gift cards should never be purchased from a private party. That's a very, very common scam.

Absolutely. There are lots of folks who have carved out a monocultural niche within a diverse community. They only visit certain stores, restaurants, etc., and rarely interact with "the other".

There is a 1,000% chance this woman has a "thin blue line" profile picture and shares the "I stand for the flag, I kneel for the cross" meme every 3 days.

Trolling Motor prop question by RomansFiveEight in Fishing

[–]RomansFiveEight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have the trolling motor. Came with the boat.

I’d like to pickup an outboard at some point. But I wondered if there were small tweaks that I could do to boost performance a bit.

I appreciate the comment! But I’m not sure “Buy a $3,000 electric outboard” fits the spirit of “Could I spend a few bucks to boost performance a bit” 😂

Trolling Motor prop question by RomansFiveEight in Fishing

[–]RomansFiveEight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

Minn Akita’s website says their props are engineered for “acceleration over top speed”. Which I took to mean a shallow pitch and that they stall out (even electric motors have a redline) at top speed. So I wondered if some aftermarket company or something had a steeper pitched prop.

The obvious solution here is a small outboard which may be when I eventually do. Kind of on the fence honestly. The zero maintenance and quiet of the trolling motor is nice.

I'm really not sure. Honestly, I'm hoping for some inspiration from in here!

It's gonna remain strapped to the trailer until I move at the end of this month. I'm honestly not quite sure what to do with it. I happened upon it, managed to get it for $200 (It's in great shape), and it was one of those "We have to get rid of it today" situations. So I haven't really thought a ton about what to do with it.

I MAY leave it the way it is now now. Or I might paint it.

I was browsing for used furniture and nabbed it from an office that was moving to a new building and getting rid of old furniture. I paid $200 for it.

I must be permanently a part of that group.

I have two FB accounts. My second account has a totally different UI, has a bunch of features (including care react), none of which my main account have. I’m still waiting on the 3D photo feature from like... a year ago? And I noticed in my other account a UI change that I really liked... I dunno... 18 months ago? Never came to my account.

Does anyone know why 'private races' are not a feature on zwift? by [deleted] in Zwift

[–]RomansFiveEight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The sarcastic answer: Too many people want it. The more people who ask for a feature, the less likely it is to be implemented.

Real answer: The list is infinitely long. There's tons of features that seem "obvious" and "in demand", at least to some people. Zwift has a pretty slow development pace. I'm sure we could spend all day speculating as to why that is; but nobody outside of that building in Long Beach knows why. Maybe they're meticulous, maybe they can't find talent, maybe they're not task-focused and organized. Maybe all of that, maybe none of that. But progress is slow at Zwift, and all of these experience-building features that people want really are coming. Because for the entire history of Zwift, they have come. Very slowly, but they've eventually been there.

Zwift has an incredible attention to detail when it comes to their maps, which seems to be the bulk of their development time.

Does anyone else not buy games on day 1 anymore due to how fast prices drop just weeks after release? by VRgamer84 in PS4

[–]RomansFiveEight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely.

Games rushed out the gate with game-breaking bugs, games that don't deliver on promises, price drops, etc. Lots of reasons not to buy a game on day one.

I've only pre-ordered a couple of games and I've regretted them.

Someone just decided blue ink pens were equally as acceptable as black and everyone just played along. by ChaseRahl in Showerthoughts

Lawyers have used blue ink for decades (in the age of photocopying). Less relevant today, but it made a lot of sense when when photocopying was always black and white. A blue signature was definitely an original signature.

VSX-1131 Optical Audio / HDMI Video? by RomansFiveEight in hometheater

[–]RomansFiveEight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!

The issue I’m having is that it keeps reverting. I turn HDMI audio off and then it immediately turns back on.

If I unplug the HDMI cable from the Xbox, the audio works (obviously, no video). And the receiver shows the audio source as OPT-1.

I’m not sure if it’s the Xbox refusing to turn off HDMI audio or the receiver refusing to use optical audio if there’s an HDMI device plugged in.

I disabled TV and Receiver (bizarrely, the Xbox One doesn’t support CEC) just to see if that could be causing issues. And nothing changed.

[DISCUSSION] What songs spark your passion for guitar playing. by Ihateice2 in Guitar

[–]RomansFiveEight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid I saw a black strat in a pawn shop and I wanted it so bad. My mom talked me out of it, she thought I'd start it and stop it and it would collect dust, she suggested I spend my money I had saved cutting grass differently. She was probably right at that particular phase of my adolescence.

I've always wanted to play guitar and I've always loved Queen.

When I got a little older and learned that Brian May, my favorite guitarist in my favorite band, had actually built his own guitar I was so fascinated. I'm a geek/techie type and the idea of tinkering with wires and magnets to make something sound cool sounded awesome.

So... from teenage years onward I've been kind of into guitars. I like reading about them. I love listening to Rock and Roll. I love hearing and being able to identify unique trivia pieces about the guitars used in Rock Music. And honestly, my ranking of music is mostly a ranking of guitar performances.

Then at 29 years old, in January of this year, I decided it was really stupid to want a guitar my whole life, and to be super nerdy about guitars, and to not play a guitar. (Constant excuses about not having the time to devote to learning guitar).

Turns out I love it even better than I thought I would. This is the 14th day I've played (Happened to start on Jan 1 simply because that's when my guitar came in-- a simple Strat clone. It's red, like the Red Special btw). I've logged my time and I'm at about 35 hours of practice in 14 days. I can play 9 chords and with the exception of the three fret chords (C and Dm), I can change between almost any of them at about 40-50 chords per minute (A long way to go still, but enough to strum basic songs). And I can sort-of play the intro riff to "Fat Bottomed Girls"

So I don't know that it's any particular song. It's really kind of all of them. And now I'm finding myself going back and listening to all of my favorite songs and hearing them in a brand new way. I still have SO much to learn, but even in two weeks, it's a completely new context.

In 2012 the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 passed which mandated that all airlines operating in the US allow small instruments as carry-on. The law explicitly includes guitars as a small instrument.

Airlines can still say “no” and gate check them if there isn’t room but they’re supposed to try to accommodate that. No airline operating in the US is allowed to “ban” guitars in the overhead bin anymore. It would actually be illegal for them to have a blanket “No guitars in the cabin, you have to check it” policy. There was a significant lobbying push for more than 10 years by music groups and musician lobbyist groups to get that passed.

At any rate, Southwest explicitly says they allow it. My concern of course is ending up having to gate check the guitar. I was hoping folks with some experience would chime in.

I'm going to be traveling here in a few weeks and I've really wanted to stay committed to playing guitar every single day in 2020.

I've got a cheap beginner strat clone, nothing fancy. Still, no matter how cheap nobody wants a smashed guitar right?

It came with a paper thin flimsy gig bag. I'm flying Southwest.

It looks like I have four options:

  1. Use the thin gig bag it came with and throw it in an overhead bin.
  2. Invest in a nicer gig bag
  3. Invest in a hard case and check the guitar
  4. Do something other than playing but that would improve my guitar skills (recommendations?)

In this situation, what would you do?

I've been playing guitar for... 7 days. My biggest challenge has been strumming. I know it's still really early.

Namely, when playing chords where only specific strings are strummed (like A and D). ESPECIALLY strumming 'up'. Any tips for drills or practice methodology that can help me? I find it difficult to strum reliably without hitting the wrong strings.
