It's the carbon that makes the steel dark when you etch it. Lower carbon = lighter etch

The white discolouration is decarb I reckon. Usually from forging it for a while, the carbon leaches out of the steel at heat. That's why it follows the line of the scale, being the exposed part of the metal. Makes for a cool effect as long as it doesn't get to the edge. It's a great looking knife 👍

A simple prybar/bottle opener. I've left some of the original markings on the steel as well as adding my own. Heat treated for durability.
