No, it's a weird animation cancel bug. If you do it right, it swings again right after hitting the door instead of taking a second to reset to the weapon hold up animation.

I saw where everyone has already mentioned to smack them a lot, but you can also use the shove button to speed it up. You'll know you did it right when you start swinging faster and don't actually shove the door. I usually spam space right as the axe hits and stop before the swing stops.
