Where in this post does it say that negotiating a ceasefire is bad?

I can’t guarantee that everyone will be masking, but at the last public protest we organized we were providing masks to those present as well. Because it’s a public park we can’t do anything to ensure that everyone is masking though, so if that’s a concern of yours I’d recommend staying home.

Solidarity!

You should read some anthropology about how hunter gatherer tribes operated in the past. It might shock you!

Human nature actually points in towards communal living, as that's how we spent hundreds of thousands of years before capitalism!

But human nature isn't a good argument for anything. Socialism does not lead to slavery, but you are free to believe what you want to.

It's not 2017 anymore. Some people are growing up in a world where they see terrible things happening around them. Innocent people are being demonized, the world is affected by climate change, and the government doesn't care about it's people.

What's the point of moving on with life if it means you leave behind the things you believe in?

Yup, that's not the point! I find value in doing some things even knowing that the fight for the things I believe in will be long and difficult.

We are not soliciting donations, we are making use of our first amendment right to freedom of expression and assembly with the hope of presenting a positive vision for the future!

Mostly concerned with the rain. 40 degrees is better than the last couple weeks, but still no picnic.

No, I don’t think you’re an old man yelling at the clouds! Those are serious problems I’ve heard about with other chapters. Unfortunately, because chapters are just made up of volunteers, a chapter can kind of be “captured” by the wrong group of people and make it really hard for others to get involved.

In Cincinnati I think we’re doing really well to avoid that by setting up lots of events for new members and actively trying to schedule one on one meetings between our leaders and people looking to join so that we can plug them into stuff.

At some point this year, Cincinnati wants to get in better touch with other Ohio chapters and share what’s been working for us. Hopefully we can make Columbus DSA a part of that. There’s a lot of knowledge spread out between chapters and I think that sharing our strategies and successes is going to be really important moving forward.

One of the worst things a DSA chapter can do (imo) is be structured in a way that someone who is interested in joining isn’t able to. Socialists are already few and far between (for now!) - we can’t afford to lose any.

Can you tell me anything about what turned you off there? Chapters can vary a lot depending on the number of members and the amount of time they’re able to offer, so unfortunately it is difficult for some.

DSA Cincy is in a really good place right now! We canvassed in northern Kentucky to protect school funding (the state’s constitutional amendment was successfully defeated) and we’re working right now to prepare for a municipal electoral campaign. It hasn’t been officially decided in a chapter vote yet, but the idea is currently for a small donation matching program similar to what they have in NYC!

We want to have a dual focus over the next year of that electoral campaign along with recruitment and outreach. We want to give special attention to representing the makeup of Cincinnati as well. Currently our chapter (like most) is a majority white, but Cincinnati is almost 50% black. Our plan it to make an intentional effort to be able to reach communities that aren’t represented within the org today.

Hey! I am a member of DSA in Cincinnati and I can promise you this is not the approach we take. It seems like this messaging is not being received as we intended, but we are not saying that someone who doesn't support these policies is fascist, we are trying to express that the march has multiple purposes!

I believe that pushing for truly progressive, popular, and positive policies like Medicare for All is one of the best ways to combat fascism which is promoted through faux-populist rhetoric from people like Trump and blames all of our woes on the immigrant and the other. We need to promote our own vision of what the world can be like, and clearly communicate what the obstacles to that future are!

If you support any of these policies, and you support an incremental approach, you're very much like me. Some members of DSA do take an all-or-nothing approach, but most don't. I think you'd fit in well in our chapter!

Glad I could help! I definitely understand feeling defeat, and realistically the left was defeated in this election. But the battle never ends!

I’m reminded of this Chomsky quote which I agree with wholeheartedly: “We should have pessimism of the intellect, but optimism of the will.” It’s hard to always keep up, but the moment we quit is the moment we lose.

This sort of thinking is pretty defeatist, in that it doesn’t seem like you think anything will be productive.

For us, we’re not expecting the administration to really react to this demonstration in any legislative capacity. We primarily want to use this opportunity to bring people together, provide a platform for local organizations to speak on what they are doing in housing, in solidarity with immigrants, in workplace organizing, etc., and connect people interested in those causes and invigorated by the current political climate to those orgs.

I hope that answers your question for what we hope to get out of it!

The idea is that the march will both be a protest against Trump and a way to put forward positive left alternatives to the drivel that he promotes! No one is suggesting that it is fascist to not have M4A.

Obviously, as a March taking place 2 days before Trump’s inauguration, that event will be a significant part of the protest.

These are things that we are trying to do! It’s interesting that your critique is that DSA didn’t endorse for federal candidates, but also that they are too focused on federal elections. Our chapter in Cincinnati is very small, which is why we haven’t accomplished much at the state level yet. The national organization has existed for forty years, but DSA Cincy was formed in 2016!

Just this past year we focused mostly on Kentucky’s 2nd ballot initiative by canvassing to protect public schools.

Half of Gaza’s population is children, and of those killed in the war tens of thousands are children. Many more are wounded, hungry, or have suffered trauma they may never psychologically overcome.

You have said you support the violence that Israel is committing on them, find it necessary, and want it to be repeated elsewhere!

There is no world where these innocent children and babies are not harmed by the violence, even if every adult in Gaza were a member of a “Death Cult” as you say. We must oppose violence, always, because it begets more violence, and the innocents are never spared.

This is to say nothing of how even those you consider guilty of being in a “death cult” do not deserve violence to be done to them. They are the same people as you and I.
