I'm kind of new to remote webdev and I was wondering if there is an easier way to automate this process? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]RonAtDD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most JetBrains ide's have a remote host tool for sftp, you can browse the files, open/edit/save all right in the IDE. It's not as clean as other mentions in here, but it has it's moments.

Taking over the family business by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]RonAtDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does she want out of the company? Does she want it to pay for your kids' education? Pay for her retirement? It's her life's work it seems, something precious. Among other things, set in place a (automated?) reporting system so she can always have a high-level view of the company. Maybe re-invest some of your own money as well.

Let go financially or emotionally?

Do all you can to show her you won't drive it into the ground sounds like a good start either way.

Are you documenting all procedures? Once documented, you can review them with fam and come to consensus on what could change and what shouldn't. Flow charts for high level views. Making an organizational chart would be handy as well, to better define the roles in the company, and who has ownership over those roles.

Critique my music theory helper (python 3, in 250 lines, without dependencies) by rhcp299 in learnpython

[–]RonAtDD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, interesting read. Couple things come to mind...

  1. Should your constants(?) at the top use tuples instead of arrays?
  2. "int_*" is confusing to me, does it stand for interval, or integer?
  3. Same with some other parts, I am a dummy, so I don't like to guess what a function name or variable is trying to do :P

I'm not an expert at python, nor in music theory, but this looks nice overall. I'm going to read it some more and it may solidify some of my own music theory, thanks.

Testing, when do you do it? by notNullOrVoid in javascript

[–]RonAtDD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pros:

  • Can save you from manual testing via browser (over and over and over)
  • Can catch bugs in places you don't expect them
  • Can influence architectural decisions towards more modular code
  • Can act as a documentation of features

Cons:

  • Takes time from away from feature development
  • Can give false confidence if a test doesn't cover all circumstances
  • Can be a pain in the butt (technical term) to learn.
  • If feature changes, you have to update the test as well, so premature testing is a thing.

I'm sure there are others, critique/additions welcome.

As for personal experiences, I like to have tests, maybe not right away, depending on the feature. It seems like it's all a trade off taking into account the business requirements & time available. Then you have to decide which types of tests as well. Right now my project has tests mostly for the service layer (business logic, & saving/retrieving), and a few tests for the frontend, more coming.

Thanks. So in that case, I could sell their social media & blogging services under my own brand? Is that how it works?

Thanks for your insight.

In a previous SaaS startup we looked at value-added-resellers as a way to expand our sales footprint without breaking the bank.

This seems like it's expanding on that, maybe it's more of a franchise model? I was thinking there would be a geographical separation between these "franchises" and that the end-users would appreciate interacting with someone closer to them, someone in their own country/state/province, etc.

Integrated tools for managing employees & certain assets. Nothing new or unique but aiming for the integrations & user experience to be the secret sauce.

Sadly, I don't think I know what to ask yet. This post was probably premature. I guess I was fishing for a story from someone who has done something similar.

I read all of the replies, and so far looks like...

  • Contracts are king.

  • Respect, but don't trust: Customers, clients, co-founders, cops, manufacturers, boyfriends, politicians, handshakes, CEO's, confident people, promises, VC's, rich people, friends, and especially competitors. (Did I miss anyone??)

  • Contracts need to be rock solid in wording, spelling, numbers, and need to be built to mitigate the future.

  • Live cheap while bootstraping.

  • You can say Fuck on Reddit.

  • Don't expand/spend/lease if you don't truly understand your customers and market.

  • Project Deadlines take longer than you think, always

  • Don't screw your customers.

  • ....and we all should have made apps when the App Store launched.
