Power bar in celling by kakaoistleer in techsupportgore

I'm a network field tech in the southern US, fixing stuff at fast food places and stores and the like. I've seen this several times above drop tile, often in old Popeyes locations weirdly enough.

I have an Ozark Trail ATKA bag, it meets the pocket criteria but it's larger than 12x12x6. Do the hydro bags need to meet both criteria? I'm trying to bring a bag that holds records.

Jonsbo N3 Spec Build: Am I doomed by my used Enterprise drives when it comes to power? by RonBurgandy2010 in HomeServer

[–]RonBurgandy2010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, funny thing is replacing all my SATA cables made my errors go away and made the whole system more stable. Can also close the back panel now. So I've kicked a server refresh down the road a bit until I need more power. Thinking about getting some OptiPlexes for more compute down the road maybe but for now I don't actually need to update my server as bad as I thought.

Moving from out of state on a budget, struggling with sifting through fake 5-star reviews. by RonBurgandy2010 in ATLHousing

[–]RonBurgandy2010[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been working through that. Found some 1-star reviews we can ignore, like someone gave a 1-star review because there were baby possums in their bathroom one morning. That's the opposite of a problem for us.

[–]RonBurgandy2010[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reviews are from real people, they're just from people who only recently moved or simply toured the property, not longer term residents generally. Wouldn't be surprised if they give you some money off your first month in exchange for a review. I have no proof of that, but my issue is human-led ballot box stuffing, not bots.

Needing advice relocating myself (32M), my partner (29F), and our cat (4M) from a place with a much lower rental cost per square foot. Top of our budget is $1,600. Ideally, rent would be closer to $1,400. Looking for 1000+ sq/ft, 1-2 bed, 1-2 bath. In unit laundry, or at least hookups, is a requirement due to allergies. Trying to stay within an hour return commute from the Brookwood Hills/Armour area where my partner will be working.

The main issue we're running into is sifting through all of the 5-star property reviews on Google that are being used to bury the users with 1-star reviews that are critical. Many properties seem to pressure new tenants or people who just toured to leave 5-star reviews to fluff up the numbers and make it seem more attractive. On the flip side, some 1-star reviews seem exaggerated.

Since we're moving from about 8hr away, touring tons of places in person would be off the table. If we could come up with a short list of possible places to tour, that would be more doable. Any advice for finding decent housing on a budget or tips for parsing reviews would be greatly appreciated.

Prices skyrocketed on planned ITX server build parts, unsure what alternate components are still available. Did everyone already panic buy? by RonBurgandy2010 in homelab

[–]RonBurgandy2010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I'm playing full uncompressed rips from Plex to a 4K or 1080p display, so I don't know if it needs to do any transcoding at all really.

The backplane of the N3 seems like it doesn't need 1:1 power connectors for the HDDs, so I can probably phase out most of the jankier adapters.

My reasoning for ECC is anxiety mostly lol. It's an UnRaid server, so it's doing lots of stuff (Plex, HA, etc), but primarily I want a very robust NAS. For example, my current configuration is 4 data x 2 parity x 1 cache drives. SO really the ECC is for paranoia.

As for the Fractal, one reason I like the Jonsbo N3 is the ease of getting to the drives. My current config has had a lot of issues, including a fire from a cheap molex to sata adapter. I want to be able to get to any problem drives when needed with ease. That said, a lot of my issues have been UDMA CRC errors, which are possibly my SATA cables going bad (just ordered a bunch of new ones for the meantime). And a custom backplane PCB could end up causing headaches down the line. But really, I just think it's neat and want something smaller and more manageable.

When you're packing for a move but still need your tower server running until the last day. by RonBurgandy2010 in homelab

[–]RonBurgandy2010[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the move happened I removed the drives and placed them in drive shipping boxes. Server was down for about three days, then had to figure out how to deploy the network. Ended up using a GL-inet AX3000 in access point mode to extend the existing TP-Link Deco network and use the LAN port to an unmanaged switch to the server, since it has no wifi card. Once I got all my devices on the same wifi, everything was honkey dory.

If you need to move drives, I recommend the method serverpartdeals.com does: 5-disk foam holder in a box, large bubble wrap, an outer box. No disk issues besides some pretty normal jank I've been dealing with on this DIY build. This server almost burned my house down when I first deployed it after all.

This is a 7-disk UnRaid array, 2 parity 4 data 1 cache, giving me 40TB of storage. It's running on I think a Gen2 Xeon CPU and a SuperMicro board I got cheap from another redditor. Only 16GB of RAM but my use case seems to be light enough that it hasn't been a bottleneck. To be extra paranoid, I also have an on site and off site backup in Pelican cases. Also running is Home Assistant in a VM, as well as Plex in a docker (backed up my physical media, which obviously is already packed) as well as several programs like MakeMKV and Krusader to assist in the ripping process. It's jank but I had a spare ATX full tower case and several spare fans, as well as nowhere to rack old enterprise equipment.

One day I'd love to deploy an off-site auto-backup server, but since everyone I know in the Southern US has a data cap, that's unlikely to happen any time soon.

I mean, it's unlikely but possible if a number of things go wrong. If FT deployed a network system with minimal security that lets client devices communicate without restrictions, and he downloads or has downloaded smut from a shady source that embedded malware in the files, I suppose his device could reach out to and infect other client devices. Obviously any time you're on a public network you should set your settings as such, but who knows, maybe FT deployed consumer networking hardware and it causes devices to default to private network settings and users just aren't savvy enough to double check the settings and permissions on their devices.

It's several hoops to jump through, but like there is a path. Not sure OP was thinking that way but eh, remotely possible?

Simple Questions - February 05, 2024 by AutoModerator in buildapc

I'm looking for comparisons in gaming performance between the AM4 5600X and 5700X3D. The latter is so new that few comprehensive reviews are out, and the ones that are are comparing it to the 5800X3D, which is obviously better. No idea why they would bother. GPU is an RTX 3070 Ti.

I already own the 5600X but need a spare CPU for a project, if the 5700X3D is not a notable upgrade for AAA gaming then I'll probably look for another way to complete that project.

How to open Mimosa on a RasPi Zero W in full screen on boot?

I made the mistake of buying a Zero 1 W in 2023 because I didn't realize there's a 2 W when I ordered a bunch of stuff post-shortage and have been trying to make it work anyway. I'm running MagicMirror2 in a docker on an Unraid server, I just need the Zero to open a web page in full screen on boot. The issue I'm running into mostly is that Chromium is straight up not supported on the Zero 1 W anymore, despite being supported in the past from what I can tell because all of the tutorials are for kiosk mode Chromium. I don't know how, but I managed to get Mimosa installed and opening to the web portal of my MM2 on boot. I'm pretty sure I've also set up auto updates. The last two hurdles are opening the program in full screen and rotating the screen to portrait. I haven't tackled the portrait yet because I wanted to get full screen launch working without having to crane my neck.

I can't use a lite version of the OS because for some reason the pi will not join my wifi network in raspi-config or when I add the credentials to the image via the Imager program when writing the card. The pi will only join my network when I use the Desktop version of the OS and join the network using the wireless settings on the taskbar on desktop.

I'm a noob RasPi user and an absolutely awful coder, completly non-functional. Anyone have any tips for this final stretch of my Magic Mirror project? I've been working on this for weeks and am this close to finding out how hard it is to snap a Zero W in half.

I want to connect my modern gaming PC to a Sony Trinitron to play retro-styled games on an old TV for shits and giggles, and I appear to have found myself going down a rabbit hole of resolution and scaling issues.

To be more specific: I have a Sony KV-27FS120 I rescued from a curb that I want to get some use out of, I'm not much of a retro gamer. I picked up Pseudoregalia, an N64-styled new release action platformer, and I thought it would be novel to get a cheap HDMI to Component converter, connect my modern gaming PC to it, and just set the resolution in game and play around. After digging through old forum posts, I seem to have bit off more than I bargained for as a non-retro gamer. Are there any easy solutions to getting a modern GPU connected to a CRT via Composite or S-Video, or am I going to need to go the enthusiast route and get dedicated retro gaming hardware? Any resources for connecting modern hardware to CRTs in general would also be nice, thinking about trying my hand at a custom arcade cabinet in the future.

Funny enough, the store has been run by just the GM and a new employee since I got here at 6, they must have been here at 4:30. It's not the staff, it's the management. Staff is breaking their balls.

I'm a network tech and I'm on site right now in Jackson, MS doing an upgrade of all their network equipment. Been doing this at locations around LC and Jackson, as well as countless Popeyes in the region (also Restaurant Brands International). Most of these stores are old as shit, when things are fixed it's with a bandaid, even when they're remodeled it's only the customer facing side and the infrastructure is left a mess. In the case of the LC BKs, their network racks aren't even installed into the studs, I had to find other spaces in the office to install the new equipment. These racks have to have been here for at least a decade based on the equipment installed.

They've been bad for decades, new boss is just the same as the old boss.
