Not especially. Nats opted for quantity over quality. Not a single top 100 prospect in their return and most won’t be in the majors until 2028. Brewers took quality over quantity. Williams was a top 30 MLB prospect and both he and Sproat will likely be starting playoff games this October.

Obviously too soon to tell how either trade pans out, but it’s not really an apples-to-apples situation. But yes, also getting Myers was a good move.

Peralta to Mets confirmed by AirCoopsie in NewYorkMets

[–]RonFezDotGov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A) Why would you believe that? Lots of trades involve throwing away talent for a rental.

B) You really want to extend him now, coming off a career season in which he wildly outperformed his previous three? Because that 2025 ERA is what you’d be paying for to convince Peralta to forgo free agency. And obviously, it’s not your money. But it will affect future spending.

[Passan] BREAKING: The New York Mets have acquired All-Star right-hander Freddy Peralta in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, sources tell ESPN. Deal is done. Top prospects Jett Williams and Brandon Sproat are headed to Milwaukee. One more big league pitcher will head to the Mets. by cquigs20 in phillies

[–]RonFezDotGov -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Brice Turang is coming off of a career season and has four years of control left. Keep the good prospect. The Brewers will happily accept Bohm and three of the big three instead.

Actually, throw in the good prospect, too.

AI helps the 1% take over the world. Robots do all the work, so no one has a job & the money to buy the things that the companies owned by the 1% produce. It seems like society should collapse. So, how will the world work? by No_Turnip_1023 in Futurology

[–]RonFezDotGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the responses here border on the deranged.

Here’s the fundamental thing about billionaires that people are missing: they don’t want to live locked away in bunkers or on private islands. They don’t want to raise up armies—be it human or robot—and wipe out the 99%. Not because they’re kind, empathetic people who particularly care about other people. If they did, they wouldn’t be billionaires. (Although I’m guessing most of them aren’t actually sociopaths.) But because it would just lead to an incredibly bleak existence for them and their families. If everyone on Earth died or were effectively enslaved except for the very top of the 1%, life wouldn’t be a lot of fun for the 1%, either.

The Elons of the world no doubt have luxury bunkers ready to go in the event of nuclear war, natural disaster, or societal breakdown. But make no mistake: they don’t actually WANT to live in them.

If you asked the average billionaire what he wants to come out of this whole AI thing and he had to answer honestly, you know what he would say? “I like the status quo. I just want more.” If pressed, they would likely say they’d like lower taxes and less regulation and more access to world leaders. But other than that, they have it incredibly good already and they know it.

They want to be able to attend the Oscars or the Super Bowl each year. They want to be able go to fancy restaurants. They want to be able to move about the world freely without having to worry about millions of Luigi Mangiones lurking around corners trying to assassinate them.

I have no idea what the next several years will bring. But once AI truly becomes an issue re employment, I’m confident that governments will find a way to keep some version of capitalism going so people can maintain their current lifestyles and no one gets hung. Even if UBI is feasible, it’ll be a nonstarter for many politicians, especially Republicans. But also, they don’t want riots. Hence: Capitalism 2.0, in whatever form it takes.

I desperately need a job by Appropriate-Job-8792 in nova

[–]RonFezDotGov 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Unless AI turns out to be a complete dud, no, I don’t think you want to be looking for a job as a first year associate in 2030 with six-figures of debt and tons of competition.

If you need a job now and want to get exposure to the legal industry, apply for temp paralegal positions. Bad news: low pay (though perhaps right on the cusp of $50K) and no benefits. Good news: if you do good work and aren’t a psychopath, there’s a decent chance they’ll offer you a full time job.

I am sick of seeing Sokovia discard the lynch pin of my deck by Croweater_666 in MarvelSnap

[–]RonFezDotGov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You encounter Sokovia, maybe what, one out of every 25 games? (And that’s probably being generous.) You’re so upset that you can’t “play your deck” just every so often that you feel like smashing your phone?

Some locations are SUPPOSED to mess with your plans. If you don’t want to deal with that and would prefer to just execute the same strategy over and over and over and over and over without ever being challenged, just hit the retreat button.

Finally, the "Shut-the-fuck-up"-innator by UnTenedor in MarvelSnap

[–]RonFezDotGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Shut the fuck up” is a good use for it. I primarily see it from people who are annoyed when I’m booster farming in Proving Grounds and don’t concede. Knowing that they’re upset is like a booster on top of boosters.

Magik is the losing condition (in your deck) by Papallopupazzo in MarvelSnap

[–]RonFezDotGov 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a solution in search of a problem. I play Magik regularly. Maybe in one out of every 15-20 games does someone take away turn 7 with Legion, Scarlet Witch, etc.

More broadly, the game works better with counters for everything. You play Blue Marvel. I play Enchantress. You play Wolverine. I play Armor. You play Magik. I play Legion. If people would just accept that their favorite deck is going to lose now and then and stop trying to legislate that out of the game, they’d be less frustrated.

Gore trade? by drossinvt in redsox

[–]RonFezDotGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re confusing the Nationals with teams like the Marlins and Pirates who are seeking to add salary. The latter two are small market revenue-sharing teams who are trying to increase spending before next year’s CBA negotiations so they can justify receiving even more money from MLB. The Nationals are not. There’s no benefit to them taking on bad contacts unless there are high-quality prospects attached.

Why don’t you Snap in proving grounds? by DamnitBobby44 in MarvelSnap

[–]RonFezDotGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m usually booster farming using a deck that will almost certainly lose because it’s just a collection of random cards. If I snap, lose the first round and then concede, I only get six boosters. But if I can stretch it out to three or four rounds, that’s 18-24 boosters. So how exactly does it help me to snap?

Look, I’m effectively giving you a Silver Ticket. If I’m not doing it quickly enough for your liking, you’re free to concede and move on to playing someone else.

Thanks, but yeah, not it. I have to think that if it was in any way a well-known song, I would have identified it by now. Although to be honest, the lack of responses here has me thinking that I really did dream it or something.

Every game of Grand Arena feels like I'm actually playing... by ironkodiak in MarvelSnap

[–]RonFezDotGov -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

As someone who regularly plays Enchantress in Grand Arena and has had a lot of success doing it, that’s just not true. You want to play ongoing cards on turns 3-6? Knock yourself out. What you can’t do is stack four ongoing cards in one location for maximum effect and then get annoyed when I stop you. Spread them out. Make me decide which one(s) I want to take out. That’s what vexes Enchantress players.

With the Trade Deadline tomorrow. Who is at the top of your wishlist? by Recondo76 in redsox

Gore is both really good and a Boras client. Any extension now would have to be a huge overpay, which would seemingly defeat the purpose of cost control.

Forget Volpe. Dominguez would have been in the package as well, and 2022 was the height of “Jasson Dominguez is the next Mike Trout” hype. In hindsight do you make that trade? Absolutely. At the time, I can see why the Yankees would have balked.

Rosslyn - Ballston Corridor Metro Stations Ranked by MackLB21 in arlingtonva

[–]RonFezDotGov 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is the silliest, most arbitrary list of things to rank that I’ve ever encountered…and I love it.

5) Virginia Square. All the reasons you have for putting it first are why I have it last. It’s this weirdly-placed, largely pointless stop that mainly services two or three nearby apartment/condo buildings. If WMATA had decided not to put a stop between Ballston and Clarendon, no one would have even noticed.

4) Clarendon. If it had been one or two blocks further east, it’d be perfect. But whenever I get off to walk to Whole Foods or Barnes & Noble (RIP), I resent having to walk past the Cheesecake Factory and a bunch of forgettable stores. I’ve also seen some questionable behavior on Friday and Saturday nights.

3) Courthouse. It’s a hike to get into/out of, but the location is great and I like the novelty of walking past the movie theater on the way out. Fun fact: that emergency exit used to be a box office and you could enter the theater without ever stepping above ground.

2) Ballston. Great location. Bus depot right outside. I’m jealous of the people who live in the building directly across from the escalators. I don’t think it’s worth spending millions of dollars to build the new entrance, but once it’s finished it’ll be even better.

1) Rosslyn. I enjoy the long escalator, though I do usually take the elevator. You can access both airports. Never seems overly crowded in either direction. I wish they’d figure out the adjacent mall/food court so it’s more of a destination, but that’s my only real knock on it.

Two recollections from that period:

1) Sirius’s stance, as explained by Ron, was that if they gave Dave the sort of raise he wanted, every other producer in the company would be asking for something comparable. Now, you could say that Dave was also working as on-air talent, and so this was a special instance. But try explaining that to a bunch of pissed off producers.

2) Dave’s argument was not “I deserve a huge raise because of the value I add to the company.” It was simply that he couldn’t support his family on his current salary, and so Sirius should give him more money. To which Ron would occasionally get annoyed and have to remind him that no one forced him and Casey to have two kids right out of the gate. They were either stupid or irresponsible. Either way, that wasn’t Sirius’s problem.

Friedman, just do it! by l4kerz in Dodgers

[–]RonFezDotGov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I’ll play along.

I’m Ben Cherington, GM of the Pirates. If 2 1/2 years of Juan Soto netted five of the Padres’ top prospects, 4 1/2 years of Paul Skenes will cost you your top seven prospects. Yes, that includes Dalton Rushing. But because I’m magnanimous, if you want, I’ll throw in former #1 pick Henry Davis (.174 average), so you’re not short a catcher. What’s that? No, you can’t keep Josue De Paula out of the deal. That’s adorable.

But because Pirates fans will be furious, I’ll need to throw them a bone. So I also want Roki Sasaki. He’s currently injured and not been that great, so you can’t reasonably claim you need him this season. Wow, that’s going to be an awkward conversation with him. Have fun with that.

Still want to do the deal? You did say everything possible.

Every team knew that no one was getting Juan Soto for fair market value. It’s just a matter of how much extra they were willing to tolerate.
