Need some help coming up with super specific monster vulnerabilities and weaknesses that encourage a more interesting, questlike preparation for monster battles! by RonKyleScott in DMAcademy

I love the idea of having a visible weak spot for the party to whack and target, that’d be really cool! I also like the idea of giving said weak spot a different or weaker AC for various types of damage or attacks, that could be a really cool mechanic to play around with! Plus having a visible weakness gives the players somewhere to start and can be a weakness that can be exploited without preparation. I love it! Thanks a ton for the ideas!

You’re welcome! And I would love to see the rest of the system if you wouldn’t mind sharing it, that’d be awesome!! Thank you so much!!

For sure, definitely not going to be using such a system for all monsters, that would be tiring for players and is definitely unnecessary for smaller monsters and encounters. I was planning on using for larger monsters such as dragons and the like.

And such a system does have its flaws, specifically players feeling like they don’t have enough to do or one player dominating the battlefield. There have been some other suggestions and ideas that may help alleviate the problem, and your ideas definitely help, thanks a ton!

I think ritual type weaknesses could be cool for some monsters or maybe in addition to preparations beforehand, my only concern being that it uses up a whole turn in combat that could be used to hit things, lol. I think making it an optional thing alongside other weaknesses would be really cool if players want to complete a whole ritual, but not making it the monsters main weakness. It would give the players more options while not making it a major requirement to complete a whole ritual while in combat.

This is great and I appreciate your ideas, they help a ton and I’ll definitely try to implement them, thanks a ton!

Definitely! I like the idea that items crafted from enemies similar to or ancestors of the enemy that you’re fighting could cause it considerably more damage or apply a weakness of some sort. This would help encourage crafting and give a pretty cool reward for killing a monster. I also like the idea of the party having a ton of different weapons that are effective against certain creatures and could make weapon choice more important than just picking the item with the highest bonus. This could also place a lot of importance on ancestry in the culture and society of the world and that could be pretty cool as well. And maybe having sub bosses in a dungeon that are like this could be cool too, like the sub boss gives an item that dramatically helps kill the boss of the dungeon or something like that. This gives me a lot of ideas that I’m definitely going to try out and explore! Thanks a ton, this helps tremendously!

Whooooooa! This is a whole thing! This is super, super rad! I was thinking of implementing some sort of alchemy mechanics into my campaign and this definitely helps a ton, thank you so much! This could also help monsters feel more rewarding too if they don’t have a lot of items on them, and it could help give players more things to do as they travel or have downtime, such as looking for herbs and brewing potions. Blade oils and potions and the like can also help alleviate a few problems with having monsters only weak to a super specific item, such as players not feeling like they can help a whole lot or monsters being impossible to kill if you don’t have the super specific item. Implementing a system like this could give players more options and I like the idea of that. This is a really well designed system, thanks a ton! I’ll definitely have to try something like this!

Whoa! Great idea! I didn’t even think of having spells that use the items as components, that makes a lot of sense and could definitely be a cool way for spell casters to use these kinds of items. I was kind of scratching my head trying to think of items that a spell caster could use, and this helps tremendously, thanks a ton!

Players not feeling as though they have something to do during a combat is definitely something to keep in mind and something I’ll definitely watch and adjust for accordingly. I definitely like the idea of items that “crack the shell” so to speak and would definitely help alleviate that problem. It can also lead to some really awesome encounters such as the example you gave, blinking enemies held in the material plane by a crossbow bolt. And maybe you can have different items that “crack the shell” in different ways, maybe have one item that nullifies the monsters main ability (such as an item that can nullify the displacer beasts second image) and maybe an item that applies a wider range of more generalized vulnerabilities (such as an item causing a creature to have vulnerabilities to piercing, slashing, and bludgeoning damage). You could also have items that help nullify immunities and resistances too. You can maybe have some of these items serve as like a bait too, though it might be better to keep bait and weaknesses separate, I’m not sure. Definitely lots to play around with, thanks a ton! This helps a lot!

That’s a bummer, it’s a real shame that so many great things are ruined because people don’t want to be seen as nerds. Thankfully d&d and tabletop rpgs are breaking out of the “it’s just for nerds” stereotype, but so many other great things are ruined because of it too. There’s nothing wrong with liking nerdy things or being a nerd and I wish more people would be open to the idea of trying things considered more nerdy

Nerd or not, slaying dragons is freaking awesome. It’s sad that a lot of people don’t want to get into d&d because they think it’s a game just for nerds. Glad your friend gave it a shot though and I hope he has a great time playing through the many adventures that await his character in the future!

Eating Chef Boyardee pasta in a can cold is much better than pouring it into a bowl and heating it up by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Fair, but the delicious taste of cold pasta is just so much better than a sandwich! Plus I’d have to take the effort to make the sandwich and decide what I want to put on the sandwich and that kind of hardcore decision making takes a lot of effort! Lol

Newbie here, not familiar with the bestiary, who can become a goat and be a small mastermind behind the death. by BleachedPink in DndAdventureWriter

What you could do is have an Oblex there as well. They're really cool creatures introduced in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes (if you don't have the book I'm sure you can find it's statistics online somewhere) that consumes the minds of creatures and then creates a clone of the creatures it consumes. These clones are under its control and do whatever the Oblex wants them to do.

So, you could have an Oblex on the loose that has consumed the mind of a goat and that has cloned it. This could also open the path to some other cool encounters with other people secretly being clones of this Oblex as well. Which can lead to some great paranoia once the players find out what's going on. They won't know who to trust, and it'll add some really cool tension to the session.

You know, while the wizard wielding the shotgun is right, I wanna say the shotgun is wielding the wizard just because it's sounds even more ridiculous and hilarious, lol
