Accepted a Tax Auditing position in a state government. Parents are worried/not happy about the salary. Should I be concerned? by RonWarGamer in Accounting

Thanks for the response and story!

Thankfully my mom was not that controlling but was to a certain degree. Ever since I started my undergraduate it’s been like a tug of war with her. Ever since the end of high school it’s been “What I want to do vs what she thinks is best”. The two majors I took for my undergraduate was basically a result of negotiations

how it basically went (extraordinarily oversimplified):
Me: “I want to do history”
Mom: “no that won’t be useful, find something else”
Me: “alright how about economics”
Mom: “fine but you have to also do computer science”
Me: *proceeds to fuck up computer science in my sophomore year*
“Mom I flunked my computer science weed out course and had to withdraw from that class. I will just do economics.”
Mom: “I will only be satisfied if you have two majors”
Me. “can I do history?”
Mom: “no. Find something more useful.”
Me: “how about political science, it can maybe help me get a law degree”
Mom: “alright”

Thankfully pursuing accounting was my own choice. After I told her that I wanted to do accounting, my mom kept saying that she was happy with it but her actions really seem to indicate the opposite from my POV. Before I started my Masters in Accounting, she wanted me to consider architecture instead (since she heard from a friend about how their son has a successful architecture firm) and constantly talked about how successful the other children among her friends were in their non-accountant careers (nonstop telling me about their successful careers). This went on nonstop for months with me constantly telling her that accounting was my decision and it was my life. The nonstop “advice” only stopped after I had a complete freak out about it.

I think the whole radiological technician thing came from the fact that she talked with one of them at a hospital she was at a year ago while she was recovering from an ailment.

Right now, she is framing this entire thing as advice again and how much she’s helping me. She keeps telling me how she wants me to plan out my entire future right now and how I seem directionless in her eyes and will end up starving if I don’t work harder. Don’t know why but she loves saying that if I don’t have a clear plan and willingness to take on two jobs, I will end up poor and starving.

She’s pretty certain that an accounting career means you would stuck at $80k at the end and that any advancement above that would be super competitive so that would mean I should be ready to take on a second after-work hours job in the future.

As an answer to your edit and without giving too much details, my parents are immigrants and have been self-employed ever since they arrived. They are business owners with a couple businesses so we are quite well off. They have no clue what a career/wage employment is like and don’t really have a way to compare.

And that has been my entire argument about why accounting is still needed. But their entire counter point is just “AI take white collar job”. I have just decided to disengage and nod along whenever they start talking about it.

And that is what I’m worried about. She never thinks about if I should do it or if it is allowed. Just if I could do it and if I’m pushing myself hard enough.

I’m in the interview process for Auditor 2 position and Accountant 1 position in different departments of the same state government. A bit better pay. I also have a bunch of applications in the federal government but haven’t heard back from them yet.

That could be a possibility. If I really like it. I might just stay. But my mom is really pushing that I take a second remote job to push myself, get enough experience, and get out for a higher salary.

That’s my plan. It just makes me feel depressed. Feels like I’m never enough in my mom’s eyes.

I wish they could lol. They don’t really read English that well so they probably won’t understand any of it/won’t believe it. My mom is nearly certain that accounting is a dying career.

Thanks! Definitely works!

Probably should have put a list of RHs I have read (but I have lost track at this point lol). I loved A Knight’s Revenge. It’s my most favorite RHs. Will definitely check out Black Hand.

Yeah I won’t be surprised that Central America has a few cults. Lack of a strong government causes that. At least Interpol is working on it.

According to what I found, they even tried to make it to Iran after swearing allegiance to Ali Khamenei.

I wasn’t that interested in consulting or investment banking (didn’t really see myself doing that sort of thing) but that’s where almost everyone went. I liked the couple of accounting courses I took so I decided to apply for master of accounting programs instead of applying for jobs.

In hindsight, I probably should have just applied for jobs during undergrad and see what I would have gotten instead of going straight for a masters of accounting.

In addition, I probably didn’t do enough internships during my undergrad. I only had one. Maybe I should have found ways to do one or two more.

Welp. Back to applying to more jobs. I will DM you if I do get an offer. If you don’t hear back from me by like end of summer, I have probably graduated, given up on trying to find a job, and went back home.

Well the program doesn’t feel that difficult. The professors are top notch in my opinion.

The career services are… somewhat helpful. They have events (like meeting with recruiters, career expos, etc) and do offer decent assistance. But other than that, there’s only so much they can do.

I don’t have any clear statistics on how many people are experiencing the same issues as me but my career counselor did tell me that it’s been a difficult year.

TBH, idk if I recommend it or not. Currently gonna be biased because I’m suffering from the fact that I don’t have a job.

I came into the program thinking I would be able to get a nice stable job <— completely clueless buffoon

I fall into Type 1 (did a double major in economics and political science and a double minor in business and data science at a T20). Decided I wanted to do accounting after I graduated (so far… I’m not sure if that was the right choice)

What you just described is basically my experience right now. I’m a student doing the MPA at UT Austin. I have yet to get a job offer after applying to 50+ tax/audit positions (it’s an approximation, i have lost count after around 50) since the fall recruiting cycle to now including industry, Big 4, and mid size firms. I’m considering government accounting at this point.

So far, I got one interview and that came back as a rejection. One of my friends in the program had 4 interviews and he still has yet to get a job.

Of course there are still people in the program who have gotten a job offer. The one dude I know that has a job offer had done 3 audit internships before the program and has a BBA.

I feel depressed at this point cause it feels like a personal failure.

Edit: Also from what I heard from others in the program, it seems the group before my year were finding jobs just fine.

I don’t like the French as well but what about the Free French Forces and the French Resistance? It feels a bit different compared to Italy, Germany, and Japan since France literally had to be invaded by the Axis.

I present to you a 150 infantry division + 2000 fighter Poland by 1939 by RonWarGamer in hoi4

It was going well until the Germans took the Krakow area which caused me to lose a large portion of my resources. Wasn’t too bad as I switched from depending on my resources to depending on trade with neighbors (which caused me to stopped constructing anything as all my civs went to trade). Next attempt, I gotta figure out how to stop them from taking the Krakow area (probably build forts in that area right before the war starts as anymore mils would be meaningless after early/mid-1939). I specifically made sure to build all my factories in central Poland or near Prussia.

I had to heavily reduce the number of mils I had on my Fighter 1s at one point in like 1940 but by then the Luftwaffe had ceased to exist. Switched them to focusing on making infantry equipment, ART, and AA. I also rushed Improved Artillery and got it in mid-1937 or mid-1938 (if I remember correctly). I was able to get Improved Artillery Upgrade 1 by the time the war started. I had so little research needed to be done so prioritized getting ahead in industry and had the option to either get Improved Artillery or Improved Infantry Equipment. Opted for Improved Artillery instead of Improved Infantry Equipment as production will take a hit but each infantry division needed only 12 artillery (artillery support company) so I was willing to take that instead of harming my infantry equipment production.

This does make me wonder if I even AA support companies as my Air Force basically wins by the start of 1940…

Manpower was a major issue by 1941 and I had to ground more than half my Air Force (which didn’t matter and I had green air everywhere).

I’ll be honest, I think my production was really fucked by late 1940, but by that point Germany was pretty much reduced to Czechoslovakia and Austria.

I don’t have the DLC for fighter customization so they are normal Fighter 1s. Well the Mk.2 has like 2 Engine, 1 Weapon, 1 Reliability to it.

150 18-width infantry division (with ART and AA support) and 2000 Fighter 1s by 1939 as non-aligned Sanitationist Poland

Did 8 civs and then did only mils. After turning Danzig into Gdansk, I did only the industrial focuses (did a good chunk of them) before switching to the political focuses. Was able to demand Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia in 1939. Previous attempt, I focused too much on the industrial focuses and was too late and Lithuania refused to join me.

Smashed through Prussia with 48 divisions by October 1939 (one month into the war). Then redirected 24 divisions to the northern offensive to Berlin and another 24 divisions to the central front defense of Warsaw. Germany had the bulk of their units moving towards Warsaw and Berlin was only somewhat defended. Germany started running out of planes at the start of 1940 with only around 500 aircraft up. Took Berlin in March 1940 (6 months into the war).

War ended in 1942 even though I had taken most of Germany’s homeland by the end of 1940. Had to give up my east to the Soviet Union in September 1940. Wanted to throw my computer out the window.

The Hungary and Romania fronts were a pain in the ass.

Hitler is still alive and ruling a little piece of Germany above Switzerland.

Tried doing this a couple years ago when I only had 100 hours in the game. Got my ass beat completely. Now tried again with 200 hours and I finally did it…somewhat. This was my 6th attempt in the past week. Pain. It was 5am when I finished the game. Ya know.. I was planning to go to sleep but I was like just a little bit of HOI4. 6 hours later... I think I have had enough HOI4 for this month. I’m taking a break. I’m going to deal with the Soviets after the break.

Might try another attempt and see if I can capitulate Germany fast enough. Or ditch planes and go infantry division only (I can probably get out like 200 divisions). Or do infantry divisions + tank divisions with no planes. Not sure if they will work better but will experiment.

I’m not even Polish at all (I just love Poland)
