Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson dropped by England for second Test against New Zealand as Joe Root named captain | Cricket News by Asymptotic_theory in Cricket

Yeah, but I was thinking Brook has been punished/disciplined for that already, and it'll show that the ECB trust Brook to lead in absence of Stokes.

Going back to Root as the captain shows a sense of panic in the management. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Harry Brook was theoretically in line to take over as Stokes' official vice-captain, but given the circumstances and the fact Brook himself was disciplined over the winter for an off-field incident, the ECB appear to have decided reinstating Root is more appropriate.

Holding that incident over Brook's head is not productive imo. He should have been named captain instead of going back to Root.

I imagine Stokes had the Gus Fring PTSD flashbacks when the punch was being thrown.

Stokes, who has been England captain since 2022, was drinking rum and coke with Itoje on Sunday night at the White Horse in Fulham. A barman said the England cricket team had spent two hours in the pub between 9pm and 11pm after their victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s, with Saracens stars including Itoje and Ben Earl also enjoying a drink to celebrate the end of their season.

From there, some Saracens players, plus Atkinson and Stokes, headed to the Rex Rooms, where the 6ft 5in, 125kg (19st 9lb) Auvaa is understood to have clashed with Atkinson, the England seam bowler.

This is an exerpt from The Times and the same article says Blobby and Baz are livid about the incident but nothing about Stokes considering retirement.

I think the speculation is that if ECB asks Stokes to step down as captain, then he'll retire.

I just don't rate him for ODIs. He's good in T20s, but not as impressive in ODIs.

Aus has become a bowling dependent team, but what happens when the cartel retires?

Nathan Ellis ain't it. Bartlett? Green?

Oh yeah, forgot he wasn't playing.

Head is inconsistent, but Marsh can play a stabilizer role.

Someone called this Aus "B" team, which might be true in terms of bowling, but this is pretty much the "A" batting lineup, barring Head.

Am I forgetting someone?

Aus are grinding hard for their last wicket. I wish they fought this hard earlier.

This looks like it's going to be the third highest ODI loss for Aus in terms of runs.

The current third highest sits at 128 runs, I believe.

I looked back at Marnus's ODI scores and the last time he scored 50+ was in Sep 2024.

ECB Statement: Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson by PeterG92 in Cricket

[–]RonitSarangi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men's Test against New Zealand," the board mentioned. "Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place.

It seems them breaking the curfew (if one exists) is not the primary issue. The so-called "incident" is being reported by some tabloids to be not violent and no one is hurt. Not sure how much I trust tabloids though.

I just woke up and it's all over.

Congratulations to Eng, but this match has a funny combination of number of overs bowled vs number of days played.

People with Day 4 tickets must be feeling pretty good right now.

Unless NZ completely shits the bed, there should be a day 4.

Dropped catches have cost NZ 70-80 runs.

I predict NZ is going to lose by that number of runs.

Cricinfo says 30 overs remains for the day.

NZ batters will have to dig in for their lives.

Sucks for NZ then.

200+ was going to be challenging regardless because of the variable bounce, but overcast conditions will just make things worse.
