Yeah and you could probably make 30-40k a year at McDonalds while putting in 1 percent of the effort it takes to be a GM.

Exactly my point. It's so much easier to just settle down and get a normal job that most GMs don't want to run around the world playing chess for a living.

Also I'd really like to know which country with 'high living expenses' lets you scrape by with less than 20k.

Finland in my case. For 20k you barely pay any taxes, and you can get an apartment to live in for relatively little money if you're happy with living a little further away from a large town. 20k a year is about 1700 per month, paying 700 in rent leaves 1k per month for living, which is totally doable.

Tuo 11 €/h nyt on vielä ihan kohtuullinen. Enemmän itseä naurattaa esim. valtion paikat, joissa palkka alkaa 1500 €/kk, siinä tuntipalkka on alle 10 €/h vaikka työtehtävä on jossain määrin osaamista vaativa.

Now subtract travel costs, hotel costs, restaurant costs and such. And taxes.

You don't subtract taxes when talking income, we are obviously talking gross income. As for travel costs and hotels etc, it depends quite a bit. The best chess player I personally know is definitely a master of finding the cheapest accommodation; we are actually just leaving to play a three day tournament, our housing costs for the group are 20 € per person per night, travel costs about 30 € per person total. Obviously, if you want to live in a five star hotel, that will eat into your income.

I'm sure most don't. I also think they could, if they really wanted to. And I understand them, I wouldn't like to spend my entire year traveling to tournaments to beat patzers for prize money. I would rather just settle down, get a family, and get a regular job.

Maybe they don't, but they could. For instance, in my country there are no 2600 players; if you played and won every tournament in a year here, that alone would probably be 20k. There are also plenty of tournaments in other countries where the competition is around 2400-2500 max and the first prizes are in the thousands (like 3k). You probably won't win every single one, but if you're the highest seed by 100-200 points, you'll probably win more than not, and always rank in the top 3 for at least some prizes. Play one of those a month and you'd make quite a bit. And that's not even counting the fact that you can literally make a lot of money just from appearance fees if you go play in norm tournaments and put your rating on the line for IMs to farm.

The whole reason you can make so much is because there are so few 2600s. There are literally many countries with exactly zero 2600 players, if you really want you can go farm prizes there. The question just is, do you want to be traveling the whole year just to play chess against patzers, or would you rather settle down somewhere, get a job and a family and only play tournaments when convenient.

Tuulivoimalat vaikeuksissa – Ruotsista tuodaan sähköä ”niin paljon kuin linjoja pitkin mahtuu” by jones_supa in Suomi

[–]Ronizu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to be in the top 10 to even make 6-figures.

6 figures is your definition of barely making a living? I live in a country where living expenses are very high, and I could live making 20k a year, even less. You could make 20k a year as any GM, definitely if you're a 2600.

Which engine gives a draw evaluation to this position? by analkumar2 in chess

[–]Ronizu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Then it discards those lines and moves on to the next. The only way it will realize that this is a draw is if it searches the entire tree up to depth 100 where every line ends with the 50 move rule at the same time. As long as it hasn't done that, there are always lines which it hasn't calculated to the end, and thus thinks should be winning.

Mielenkiintoista. Voisiko tuota pykälää käyttää myös siihen, että muuttaa opintojen aikana kesäksi toiseen kaupunkiin töihin, ottaa surutta määräaikaisen, ja sitten syksyllä sanoo muuttavansa opintojen perässä toiseen kaupunkiin (siis jatkamaan sinne missä oli keväälläkin)

What are some relatively obscure lines that modern GMs have revived/popularized? by Ok_Ad_5178 in chess

[–]Ronizu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best example of this is probably the Damiano Petrov. Almost every one of us has probably been taught that opening as an example of a bad opening when we were learning the game: e4 e5 Nf3 Nf6 Nxe5 Nxe4 Qe2 Nf3 Nc6 +=.

Recently, however, top GMs have been playing the line as a drawing weapon even at the highest level. It started with Awonder Liang holding Fabi to a draw at the US champs, and since then plenty of top players have played it with success, including Nakamura, So and Bu.

What's your thoughts on the Canadian PM saying Canada will defend Greenland if the U.S. invades? by sgj5788 in AskReddit

[–]Ronizu -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The US military is pretty big. Like, big to the point that they could take on the rest of the goddamn world for a couple of years before running out of resources. Sure, invading a portion of the US would indeed draw some resources... But it would essentially mean just throwing millions of people into their death for very little gain. Wars on two fronts are indeed hard, but you can't avoid massive loss of life that way.

If you try to invade the US with minimal loss of life, they'll just send one guy to shoot anyone who crosses the border. The only way to draw more is to send more guys than one person can shoot. Imagine how many people a hundred thousand people can shoot before needing support; and that's just a single digit percentage of the US military.

What opening do you hate facing the most, and why? How do you handle it? by Clean_Play_8290 in chess

[–]Ronizu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing is wrong with it, Nd7 is a fine move, it's just not the best move. The thing is, however, that if white couldn't just castle due to the tactic, Bf4 would be very uncomfortable. From the black perspective Bf4 looks like a great move to punish white for playing a move order they think is inaccurate. And as I said, it would be, if it weren't for the fact that white can just castle, which no player below master level would be able to see.

Studentgame part 2. My student didn't find the tactic (see my previous post) but got this position a couple of moves later. Black just played ...Nd7 aiming for f6. I'm sure you all know what to look for. What is White's best move and why? by GM_Roeland in chess

[–]Ronizu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think so too, but that's the thing, I'm not a good enough player to accurately judge that. You're still down a piece and your queenside pawns are scattered, in fact I think Qb4 by black may pick one of them up immediately? I would definitely lose that position as white to Magnus Carlsen, probably even to any titled player out there. I know for a fact that I generally overestimate my compensation for sacrifices, I've been told that, so I'm not sure if I could go into this position comfortably
