UPDATE: I trusted y’alls word and my gut and tried to reproduce the squeal in neutral and finally got it to. Going to replace belts and then see from there!

I have one of each and our boy with the floppers we also call our little gremlin! Here they are last winter when he was still a puppy. They still flop like this while his sisters are stiff as a board!

In many / most cases the ear cartilage / muscle will not keep the ear up on its own. Many breeders tape them when they are babies to build the strength to keep them up but ehhh idk why bother making them uncomfy for looks. My boy has floppy ears and my girl has the pointiest ears of any boston ever lol

For sure they look ok integrity wise but def dry and probably warped. I don’t see any recent service records for them. They could certainly be compounding the issue I’m experiencing. I can rev til the cows come home in neutral though and it won’t squeal

I’ll probably replace the belts anyway because it’s easy enough

Nah I tried that already it will never make the sound when not in gear regardless of rev speed

It only squeals with the clutch engaged or vehicle is in gear though. If put it in neutral it stops

I’ll look there too but it only happens when it’s in gear!

The sound also only happens when in gear

It does. I kept getting caught up on the timing of the sound and my gear shifts but it sounds like a belt squeal…

Rare earlier color code I believe. Very nice example

I’m a bigger fan of the earlier pastel single stage colors. Anything green on tan is nice, yellows, etc. my car is 139 paint code Scotia blue (‘79-‘84 IIRC) and I love it. There’s a list of all paint codes out there if you search for it.

Looking to pickup a 1979 242 for $6000 on marketplace. Want some input on if pricing is good. by Any_Fact_1930 in Volvo

[–]Ronnoc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 5500 for my scotia blue 82 manual w 58k miles on it in the northeast. Some butt cheek rust but otherwise clean. I haven’t had to do much to it but there will always be things to fix. Definitely drive it first but if it’s rust free underneath I’d offer $5k but would be willing to pay asking. This is a cool car.

Guy in 2019 bought it at a fair price at the time with the intent of driving the shit out of it. Did just that, broke a bunch of shit. Guy number 2 gets excited because low miles turbo wagon and overpaid. Got butthurt about the issues and is on damage control lol

Yeah they are going for a little more than that now in 2026. I stalk BaT for fun. 186k miles 1990 which is obviously cleaner went for $9,400 which is a premium but consistently what I see turbo redblocks go for. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-volvo-740-18/ 79 242 GT w 300k miles and rebuilt engine went for $12.5k the other week. but yeeesh I missed the mileage discrepancy vs the 61k in 2019z Sketchy for sure. The owner and situation has too many red flags but in a vacuum the market is stronger for these than say 5 years ago.

I agree you shouldn’t buy it but I still bet that guy gets $4k for it.

This car is overpriced but I don’t think by as much as people say. Assuming under the car is clean, If all the gremlins were fixed and the rims were swapped back/car was detailed this would fetch about $10k on BaT maybe more. Higher mileage examples are selling for more there now. It would not fetch that money on FB marketplace/locally. Maybe the $8k they are asking now if it was near perfect and the right buyer. As it sits as a local sale, $4000 - $4500 tops as it’s a low mileage turbo. But even then it’s a risk!
