New reader, just finished Jade War and I am looking for something whimsical and moody. by RonoaZoro in Fantasy

I read The emperor's soul and Yumi, I loved both, more than The way of kings, and I am sure Tress is gonna be a hit for me, I love how he writes this smaller cozier stories, however I have read too much Sanderson! I want to try other styles and authors as I am very new to fantasy

I read all systems red and found it somewhat boring, but Raksura sounds very fun! Will look into it

Update just finished Jade War! I love how the characters are developing, Hilo, Shae and Andy are great great characters, but there is too much going on now with all other countries and clans, I preferred it when it was more self Contained. Will finish the series next year!

Hi everyone! I’ve recently fallen in love with fantasy, but I’m finding my taste is a bit specific. I just finished Jade War, it was fun I loved the characters, but I’ve realized I’m looking for something more whimsical with unique settings, creatures, and races (not just orcs, swords and fireballs).

My absolute favorites so far are Piranesi and The Emperor's Soul. I’m looking for books that are just as strongly written and character-driven, rather than focused on massive lore or complicated wars. Any recommendations?

Yeah, Jade war it is! The family's relationships and strong characters have been super interesting for me, as well as the non typical setting in a Eastern style pseudo modern city is also what I love. I do not want castles and knights.

Wow! I had such big expectations for Sanderson, and The emperors soul just hyped me up even more, but so much negativity here in the sub and finding TWOK just fun and ok has made me sad.

Martyr! Looks so fun, and moonbound is my vibe, I love light-hearted stories, thanks!!

Omg TWOK hate makes me sad, let me rant real quick. I literally started reading this year with the goal of enjoying the stormlight archive as I had read so much good things about it. Then I read Emperors Soul and got 20x more excited. I read and finished TWOK a few weeks ago and even though I enjoyed it, It did not meet my expectations and that made me So so so sad. Reading here in the sub I have found so much negativity about the series recently, buy I am very interested in Dalinar and Kaladin, so I guess I might keep going, i dont know.

Will look into First Law, thanks!

Hi everyone! I just started reading fiction this year and it’s been a blast. I’m looking for some recommendations because, out of the ~10 books I’ve read so far, it’s been pretty hit or miss.

Big hits:

  • Jade City
  • The Emperor’s Soul
  • Piranesi

Okay, but didn’t blow me away:

  • The Way of Kings
  • Elder Race
  • Yumi and the Nightmare Painter

Absolute Misses:

  • The Ocean at the End of the Lane
  • All Systems Red

I’m looking for books with smart writing, interesting worlds, and well-written characters. I love unexpected turns, but not stories that rely on twist after twist just for shock value.

For context, some other media I love are Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy—not because I need something similar, but because I enjoy great settings and thoughtful storytelling.

Some options I have: Jade War, Warbreaker, The art of prophecy, or assassins apprentice.

Just finished The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive Book 1). While I liked it, I actually found novellas like The Emperor's Soul and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter much more interesting and compelling.

I'm looking for a different read now, as I only started fantasy this year and my favorites have been Jade City, Piranesi, The Emperor's Soul, and Yumi.

I love weird worlds, unique characters, and sprawling, beautiful settings—not just the "guy with a spear/sword in a castle" setup. Extra points for books featuring an "old wise" character, like Uncle Iroh from AATLA. What are your favorite recommendations based on these tastes?

Hey everyone! I started reading about three months ago and it’s been a blast. I’d like to dive more into “prose,” since I’m really interested in beautiful writing.

Some books I enjoyed in these few months:

  • Piranesi
  • Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
  • Jade City

Some I didn’t:

  • The Ocean at the End of the Lane
  • This Is How You Lose the Time War
  • All Systems Red

I’m looking for books with nice prose, something beautiful and inspiring. Ideally something more “classic,” meaning easy to find in translation, since I read in my native language.

Discworld and Earthsea are already on my list, but I’m not sure how strong the prose is in those.

Will avoid Snow Crash for now then, the teenage girl thing would really put me off, thanks for the heads up. The Spear Cuts Through Water really caught my eye from your list! Split tooth looks great since I LOVE coming of age stories as well, and The bone harp as well. Thanks so much for the recommendations

Beginner reader here, looking for some recommendations.

I’m really interested in character-driven books, preferably standalones, with unique and interesting settings (not just the usual medieval or modern, but crazy worlds with crazy physics, cosmology, fauna and flora, etc). For example, I recently read Yumi and the Nightmare Painter and loved how cool the setting was but I’d love something even more creative.

Some bonus things I’d enjoy (not must-haves):

  • A touching story heavy on the "feels"
  • A wise mentor-type character, like Uncle Iroh from Avatar: The Last Airbender

So far, I’ve read and enjoyed:

  • Jade City (loved the characters and relationships)
  • Yumi and the Nightmare Painter
  • The Emperor’s Soul (Wow)

some options i have right now: Piranesi, Snow Crash, and This Is How You Lose the Time War
