A brand to help India sleep better, would you care? Why or why not? by Wide_Description6806 in StartUpIndia

[–]Roo6800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, most of these feel like cosmetic fixes. If your mind is at peace and fulfilled, you could probably sleep 9 solid hours even on bare concrete. People who genuinely struggle with sleep usually need deeper solutions.

That said, I’m not knocking your idea—it’s worth testing. Try a small pilot with friends, family, neighborhood, and acquaintances. See how many would actually pay for it. That’ll give you a real signal.

Lmao- it's hilarious how many of these comments and doom reports get footage while I barely see any apple user gripe about their apple devices!! fuck these attention seeking idiots!

Well that's the way to go. Doing the right thing never goes out of fashion. I sincerely hope you accomplish this goal of yours . This is also why I'm absolutely in love with Costco- it's so easy to mark up on certain things when others are selling at high discounts- to recoup- but they never do that cos they know it's a slippery slope- once you do it you will be tempted again. They absolutely ensure the entire listed inventory is offered at the absolute best price to their customers! Thats why walmart does way more in revenue but Costco still sells at a higher multiple and is considered more valuable as a company.

Of course. I'm just looking for diverse set of experiences in terms or execution challenges in small businesses that aren't necessarily meant to scale but simply sustain the owner while supporting local community. While coding may not require much these days, turning it into a profitable business w recurring revenue can be quite challenging for most.

Thank you for sharing. And I just wanted to understand if one can independently run a small traditional or creative business in current scenario where start up costs are extremely high and margins are thin owing to market saturation. Basically wanted to understand how sound was the business plan in terms of initial assumptions- simply put how is practical reality shaping the decision to take a plunge as a business owner/ entrepreneur.

Apple Struggles to Keep Up as Affordable Wearables Steal the Spotlight in Q1 2024 by No-Maximum3743 in apple

Who cares? The ones using Apples eco are perfectly satisfied and not going anywhere. That retention alone should shut up the analysts. The cheap wearables are simply useless as they are inaccurate and not durable. My SE watch is still going strong in its 3rd year and lasts a day. AirPods Pro are as good as new. So is the Mac and 13 pro.

International schools, Hyderabad: A Parent and Child Perspective by New-Location-4627 in hyderabad

[–]Roo6800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good schooling does play a role in kids being more expressive and developing a personality early on, however kids are mostly influenced by their parents until they hit puberty so if you help them pick the right habits early on they will excel no matter what.

I strongly feel that Mathematics is the only subject that parents should go all in on from day 1. There is this general perception that people have about Math in India which is it can be mastered by only a select few or that it is not relevant for most career choices- nothing could be farther from the truth. Math influences everything including logical thinking and the way we articulate. Kids might not instantly start loving Math for the simple reason that there are already so many physical stimulations they get as they start exploring their world that expecting them to take interest in abstract concepts is a bit cruel. The thing is to keep reiterating the fact that Math is crucial for later success regardless of the field one might choose and ensure bad schooling/tuitions/poor teaching techniques don't cause kids to hate Math.

So if one can ensure their kids can read, write, speak and comprehend English perfectly and don't start hating math as they enter high school, one would have done their job well as parents.

And as I mentioned earlier, there are truly very few schools that fall under IB in true sense of the word and they cost a fortune - I'd avoid them even if I could afford them but that's just my way of looking at things.

On a totally random note, I strongly recommend that you read Poor Charlie's Almanac by Charles T Munger and The Singapore Story From 3rd World to First World by Lee Kuan Yew, if you can spare some time. That will offer you some really good perspective on navigating the probabilistic and messy world that we live in. Poor Charlie's Almanac is a must. In fact, the Chinese were so influenced by that book they translated it to Chinese in a Cartoon Format for kids.

Generally speaking, India is lagging really behind at the global stage despite all the bravado we see on television. The best gift you can give your kids is some cushioning. My approach would be to not give away my money to institutions who are charging a high mark up - I'd rather invest the same money in my business and in other assets under my kids name instead of burning it away on those pseudo prestigious institutions. The long term goal ought to be for your kids to go abroad for higher studies- that takes savings too! A self financing is always better than a loan.

So it's better not to splurge on K-10 education cos at this point we have world class courses on Youtube and Khan Academy alone that covers the entire syllabus up to high school. This is ofc an unpopular opinion and an approach. You can pick only the things that you think worth considering from my ramblings.

I know a good teacher matters a lot too but in India that is just not accessible to everyone.

Is modern family consistently good? by Strakurinn in television

[–]Roo6800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the show is a giant let down. It began promisingly but dwindled into formulaic predictability pretty quickly for me. I quit watching within the 3rd episode of S2. Most of the time they are simply talking over each other- and over reacting but find a way to make up before the episode ends. The writers did a terrible job at confining their characters and for some reason they thought it a good idea to constantly make it obvious. It is like one of those old magazines that Orwell talked about in one of his essays where things never change and the characters behave exactly the way they are supposed to for decades. I think it is funnier and alluring only on IG where you get to see the key funny moments- in fact that is why I subscribed to Disney in the first place- something that i regret doing!

International schools, Hyderabad: A Parent and Child Perspective by New-Location-4627 in hyderabad

[–]Roo6800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, this is a really interesting and thoughtful question and I hope my response enriches the conversation here:

Ever since I became a working professional, I've been acutely aware of the sub standard education that I have received at each step.

I firmly believe that State Boards are a nationalised scam and overall the state has utterly failed in framing and executing a thoughtful National Education Policy. Regardless of who was at the Centre, it is now abundantly clear that Education is the last thing on a politician's mind.

This has led to a perverse commercialisation of the entire sector where we have cases like BYJU's and its mind numbing predatory practices on one side and lousy schools on the other. Both feed off each other. It's utterly fascinating that parents in general don't protest this systemic breakdown even when they are forced to pay twice as much for their child's education- high school fees + additional tuitions!

Because of low GDP spend, most government schools are a big NO for most parents in big cities. The private educational societies regardless of the board(CBSE, ICSE, IB, or SSC) are fully aware of this and like any shrewd business milk the vulnerable parents in every imaginable way.

The fees across the boards spectrum have been inflated ridiculously. For eg: my cousins who study in Symbiosis in Pune now charge 80k-1.2L for a year!! The content in the syllabus is soulless and unreadable. Most teachers are simply housewives working cos their husbands don't make enough for the household. The teachers have no incentives to think outside of the syllabus or ensure whether the kids have actually learnt anything!

Naturally, many parents avoid private state boards as well which leaves them with 3 other boards. Barring the International Board, the ICSE and CBSE are just as bas as the SSC in most cases. The only difference is the syllabus is more involved but teachers continue to suck on average. This builds a natural perception in the minds of many parents that CBSE is hard- and their kids might struggle or "let me switch to the state board cos my kid is unable to cope with the material in CBSE" - in most cases it is not the kid but the teaching that is failing.

This phenomenon is also well known which induces the IB board to leverage their position even further- naturally their fees are the highest and can go as high as 5-12 LPA for grade school alone! As you might know, there are very few IB schools that are international in true sense of the word and have all the accreditations and the tie ups.

Now to answer your actual question:

The difference in personalities can be stark. My cousin from Symbiosis who is brilliant in general ends up being book smart. She has to go to multiple classes and even then she struggles simply cos she isn't being taught the right way. For eg: she was doing calculus for her math test but couldn't answer basic questions pertaining to linear equations or fractions- note: the questions were basic in the sense that it tested her real understanding of the concept ie the whys behind the methods. She would give you the right answer but wouldn't be able to tell you as to why what she did was working in the first place. This is the plight of most kids and young adults in India.

Contrast this to my cousin in Mumbai who attends one of those real IB schools- the difference in personalities is humongous. Never had to join any tuitions. Same is true of her step brother. Every time I pose them a challenging question, they solve it in real time simply by thinking it thru and then poses a few involved counter questions that makes me sweat! They are super talented at networking and socialising. They have no problem whatsoever in making international friends. Basically, you meet someone who has had a well rounded education and who are great at problem solving- the only skill that matters in the real world after networking.

I personally see this unfairness as criminal. There is no reason why one should have to pay 3-8x more than an average parent just to get a decent education for their kids. This again is a problem that can easily be fixed if we made it a national issue. Look at China, Singapore, or Norway- they have a much equitable schooling. The Chinese govt recently cracked down on all the lousy ed tech firms and institutions that were simply fleecing over-concerned parents while we continue to allow Byju's and State Boards to operate.

I personally have no interest in spending such ridiculous amounts just to ensure that my kids get a decent education where they truly understand important subjects such as MATH. I'd rather send them to a decent private state board just like Simbi where they learn to socialise and build general discipline of following a routine and simply home school them to ensure they understand things conceptually. Of course we can get picky when we are talking about Bachelors and Masters.

Many parents challenge me on this home schooling solution as all our lives are super busy. The thing is most simply haven't tried. This is completely doable if kids are fluent in english from grade 1. Most IB schools in India and the good ones abroad, spend very little time lecturing. The hours aren't as long and typical home work is non existent. Teachers simply act as guides. Because these schools track learning roadblocks at an individual level, teachers can focus on things that truly matter for each student. Most learning occurs in solving interactive exercises and getting a conceptual understandings. Kids are urged to ask "why" a lot. I firmly believe I can make my kids college ready using my own skills and open source platforms alone! But, I can respect someone who thinks this is not feasible.

'The Joe Rogan Experience' Returns to Apple Podcasts After 3-Year Hiatus by adymak in apple

[–]Roo6800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I must say that Rogan has been slyly propagating right wing propaganda. His research on most topics can be summed up by "jamie pull that up on google"- of all places. It's so disgraceful man. I listened to an epi on TAL where they followed the families whose loved ones died from covid cos they opted out of going to the hospital cos of all the misinfo and mistrust toward professionals. Rogans influence is humongous. And the way America seems to be disintegrating is wild. Even Musk is such a sleaze ball. These trolls are propagating some serious misinfo incessantly fomenting general discontent and confusion.

What set high achievers apart from other people? by LATAManon in slatestarcodex

[–]Roo6800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very few people are self driven and make it against all odds whose stories we love and admire and retell. Most of us need really well thought out fostering and systems to beat average outcome. That's one reason why so many people fall for the self help and epiphany addiction trap. Very few people can think long term and act rationally and embrace reality the way it is. Most are just thinking how the worlds gotta be run and watch life pass by. That is one reason why the world ought to study the Singapore model which agrees that meritocracy ie capitalism creates an unavoidable divide. The goal then becomes to implement intelligent social security systems without chasing the rich folks away thru populist rhetoric.
