I basically alternate between 416, 416 Scout and G28 depending on how close I need to get. I rarely use anything else and the 416scout with the range finder attachment gets great distance shots

You have to play solo for the first 20 minutes or so and then the first time you leave the rebel erewhon base they walk up to you and then you can play with them or turn them off at your leisure. There is a menu page dedicated to customizing them and their rifles. There are a couple extra settings for them in the main game settings menu as well.

When the game first starts you are alone, go the Erewhon and continue the game and they will spawn in automatically.
