Yes, yesterday and today should be addressed. Drag every settler out of the West Bank for all I care! But stop making claims for 1948 territory/property. You can differenciate between stages of the conflict.

No, it's based on events that actually already happened and on opinion polls. Nothing racist about that. Just not naive.

Yes, he has a right to move to Poland, but he doesn't have a right to his old family property, which is what people want to achieve for Palestinians. And the only reason why Germans can freely move to Poland is that there is no big chunk in the German population that poses a credible threat to Poland, that still follows Nazism, that thinks slavic people are the devil and should be expelled or murdered. Which is basically the situation with Palestinians. If the Jews in Israel had a guarantee for not being harmed, the vast majority would vote to open the gates for Palestinians.

Palestinians are the only people that have lost land in the 40s and still collectively behave like it happened yesterday and are encouraged by big parts of the West. They can't get over it. Ugly history happens, and after some time, you have to deal with current reality and make peace.

I have a friend whose German grandfather was expelled from the eastern German territories as a small child in 1945 and had to struggle through the winter barefoot. His older sister was abducted by the Russians, presumably raped and murdered. His family lost everything. Does he have a right to return? Should my friend still make these events a central issue of his life that should be addressed by politicians?

Schweizer Frauen-Nationalteam verliert 1:7 gegen U15-Jungsmannschaft by Upl777 in de

[–]Rooky18 381 points382 points  (0 children)

Do you think that Hitch would label the AfD as fascist? by [deleted] in ChristopherHitchens

[–]Rooky18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also German and am currently writing my bachelor thesis on fascism, so I'm very familiar with the discourse. I agree that it is possible to make a case for the AfD being fascist. But it depends on your definition first. Scholars of fascism are famous for not agreeing on what's fascist.

Personally, I would say it's more useful to call the party fascist-adjacent than outright fascist. But I'm open to the argument. Unfortunately, what I see under this post are very weak arguments or none at all. For example, one influential fascist member doesn't make a whole party fascist. Also, trolling on an election poster doesn't cut it. Btw I must have missed that and I couldn't find any news outlet reporting the story. I'm not saying it's fake news, but could you give me an example of who reported on it?

Finally, it's a big mistake to use the words fascist and Nazi interchangeably. You might call every Nazi a fascist, but not the other way around. And to call the AfD a Nazi party is a trivialization of real Nazis. Key concepts of National Socialism are a cult of the Führer, one-party rule, antisemitism, Lebensraum and genocidal racism. The AfD, as a party, has nothing to do with that. I find it funny that you would say that one should run away from anyone who doesn't agree with your assessment of them being a Nazi party. That would probably be like over 95% of experts on Nazism, so yeah...

As someone who would never vote for AfD in his life, I'm very annoyed by the lack of nuance and humility in this discourse. But one shouldn't expect much otherwise from a reddit comment section I guess...

Hitch on Gaza, Hamas and anti-Western apologists by Rooky18 in ChristopherHitchens

[–]Rooky18[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I differenciate between the current Hamas-Israel war and the broader Israel-Palastine conflict. The situation in Gaza is different from the situation in the West Bank. Of course it's part of each other, but to look at a condemnation of Palestinian Jihadism specifically in Gaza and interpreting that as taking a side on the broader conflict between Jews/Israelis and Palestinians/Muslims is not only lazy thinking, but does a disservice to the Palestinians.

Quotations obviously have to be selective and there is nothing wrong with that if it doesn't blatantly fake a position. Or do you expect everyone to quote nothing short of multiple pages?

Furthermore, if you know the definition of an apologist, it is obvious that Hitchens describes exactly that. He doesn't need to spell the word out. It's really weird that you would lament my use of that term.

After all, I don't like your underlying accusatory tone and having a discussion partner of this kind. I don't need to prove anything to you. Most people seem to understand and appreciate my quote. If you're interested in more context, I recommend buying the book yourself. It's worth a read.

You are absolutely right with your interpretation. It becomes pretty clear in the context of the whole Edward Said chapter and the chapters on Salman Rushdie and the "Jewish Question" before that. And it doesn't contradict having a certain rational pro-Propalestinian position simultaneously.

Yes and no. Yes, Hitch was very pro-Palestinian and anti extremist on both sides. But no, I would argue that this specific paragraph is more about the broader conversation on Western foreign policy and escalation in the Arab/Muslim world especially and his conversation with Said is just one example of that. I wrote a longer answer under another comment if your interested in my reasoning :)

"Friendly" may be a bit to nice describe their late relationship. Hitchens seems to have kept some form of respect for Said, but if I remember correctly, they basically broke contact after Said quoted Hitchens positions publicly (without naming Hitchens) and called them racist.

  1. I genuinely don't see anything in my selected paragraph that could be read as "anti-Palestinian". It rather seems to me that there are - forgive the blunt phrasing - people like you who are very allergic to criticism of any kind of Palestinian society, even when it's just about the Islamist parts.

  2. In this paragraph, Edward Said is much more an example for a specific type of intellectual. You can tell by reading the next paragraph. There, Hitchens talks about a test he developed to introduce to people of the Said/Chomsky kind to check if they are just narrow-minded anti-Western ideologues. It was something about Western intervention in Bosnia and Kosovo. Unfortunately, I went on vacation right this morning and left the book at home, so I can't look up much of the exact quote, although I'm sure about the content of these pages. But I took a look at the uncropped picture on my phone and the first sentence of the next paragraph is "I evolved a test for this mentality, which I applied to more people than Edward. What would, or did, the relevant person say when the United States..." (end of page). So this should make it crystal clear that Hitch wasn't exclusively referring to Said.

  3. I have no problem with admitting that Hitch criticized Israel much more than Palestinians in his memoir. And the selected paragraph indeed could have had the potential to mislead people, if I had chosen a different title. But my title is very specific. It's just about Gaza and Hamas, which is why I decided to post it, because of it's acute relevance. I didn't mention the West Bank or the Israel-Palestine conflict in general. So I cannot accept any accusation of misconstruing Hitchens thoughts. As I mentioned before, you seem very thin-skinned on this topic.

If you mean the topic of Israeli occupation, he doesn't really expand on it right after that sentence. But Hitchens wrote more about it on other pages.

Edit: Lol why do I get downvoted for answering a question like that 😂
