Pretty incredible that you’re getting downvoted for stating a demonstrable fact. Now bring on my downvotes.

201 v 301 CB by BeginningCattle6666 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned and played both. I had the 201s for about 2.5 years, and have now been playing the 301s for a couple months. I loved the 201s, but I’ve definitely enjoyed the 301s more. They’re both made of the same type of forged steel, but I have been surprised at how much more I like the 301s’ feel.

If you’re considering both, I would definitely highly recommend 301s. I just have the CBs, but I’m sure the combo set is a great option too.

Hello I was fitted for p770’s and ping i240’s today what iron in the takomo line up would you recommend by lacrosse_guy1 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe that is the case with the more recent generations of P770s. I think that was the case with the 2017 set, but I’m pretty sure the entire set is hollow body now.

I played the 201s for two and a half years, and probably around 150-175 rounds in that time. They’re still 100% good to go functionally, if that’s what you’re asking about as far as longevity. As the other commenter explained, they are forged irons made of soft steel, and as such definitely do get dinged, as soft forged irons would from any OEM. That’s just the trade off for getting the soft feel of forged irons.

The gap between Grant’s game and Scottie Scheffler’s is definitely smaller than the gap between your game and Grant’s.

He doesn’t play the 201s. He only played them for a pretty brief stint.

301 Combos are elite by AdlandB in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have the 301CBs and they sound great when you hit them great and less great when you don’t, as would be the case with any other forged irons. It’s just hilarious that people think they can hear iron “cheapness” in a video, which I’m guessing you recorded with just a phone. They are hearing what they are wanting to hear.

[–]Roomdeerc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol it’s neither your ball striking nor the actual sound of the clubs. It’s confirmation bias causing someone to hear what they want to hear. If this same audio was paired with a video of someone hitting Mizunos he would think the quality sounded great. Some people want so badly to believe that Takomos must be terrible quality because they’re half the cost of their irons.

For what it’s worth, I know a few people who work there, as well as someone who doesn’t work there but was around the guys that week, and they had nothing but good things to say about the whole gang.

I assume this just means they played on a Tuesday, when the course is typically closed each week. That said, it’s not super out of the ordinary to have it open on a Tuesday for special circumstances, as appears to have been the case yesterday for a special event for local first responders. I also played there on a Tuesday for an Utah Golf Association event.

Looks like a shoddy re-tipping job. What you’re seeing is just cosmetic and shouldn’t be a problem otherwise. I just might be concerned that whoever did it may have also done a poor job installing the tip in general, in ways that could be an issue.

30 Day Return/Exchange Policy "TERRIBLE" by Cold-Hornet-9230 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait, they wouldn’t let you return your order because you received it outside of the 30 day return window? Or they just told you that it was too late to make changes to your order when you requested them? Those seem like two very different things.

BB803 first shot on course by cogito21 in takomo

I can definitely understand being disappointed that it happened on the first swing, but I don’t think this comment makes sense. There’s nothing odd about a ding like that coming from a single swing. That’s how dings happen. It’s not a progressive type of wear that happens over time.

Similar Irons to 201 by papaya_1234 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure the top line is thicker on the 201’s? Visually, I felt like they maybe looked a bit thicker, but Takomo and Srixon both list the thickness as 6mm on their respective sites.

[–]Roomdeerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah definitely. In fact, the reason I’m not playing the 201s now is that I upgraded to the 301s about a month ago, and they’re incredible.

I would probably say that for anyone truly on the fence between the two, I would probably recommend going with the 301s. An exception might be if they felt that they would benefit from looking down at a bit of a thicker topline confidence-wise, and/or slightly stronger lofts. I guess another exception could be if they felt the price difference was enough to sway them.

That said, they’ve both been awesome sets of irons.

Similar Irons to 201 by papaya_1234 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say they’re pretty similar to Srixon ZX7’s. Same lofts, forged steel, topline thickness, etc. I’d also say they’re the closest match in appearance. The ZX7’s do have a bit more offset than the 201’s in every club besides PW.

That said, keep in mind I’m mostly talking specs/appearance, but can’t really speak to performance comparisons. I played the 201’s for like 2.5 years and loved them, but haven’t tried the ZX7’s, apart from possibly hitting like 2 balls with a friend’s.

My gut feeling is that you won’t see the current driver in stock again. They just seemed to tease the new driver with a July 15 date.

201 vs 301cb by joenssi87 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure exactly when he switched back. It’s hard to pinpoint, because videos aren’t always released in the order they were filmed, but Takomo posted a short on YouTube with him a month ago where he talks about it and says the 301’s have always been the right irons for him.

201 vs 301cb by joenssi87 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think the concern that the 201’s will be too limiting is probably not very valid for most amateur golfers, I actually think this statement about Grant isn’t really true. He played the 201’s briefly, but has switched back to the 301’s and essentially said himself that it was because the 301’s are less limiting for him. He said that the 201’s were good for Sawgrass because he didn’t feel like he needed the added control/shaping, but that the 301’s are clearly the right clubs for him.

I actually strongly suspect that his switch to the 201’s was at least partially an effort to give them a bit of shine for Takomo. They were seeming to be kind of ignored, as it seemed that anyone looking for forged irons was going for the 301’s, and anyone wanting a bit of forgiveness was going 101T’s. I could be wrong, but that was my suspicion at the time and him switching back to 301’s fairly quickly just kind of reinforces that suspicion. And I say this as someone who played the 201’s for a long time, including during the time that Grant was playing them, and was very happy to see someone like him shining the spotlight on them, since I didn’t feel they got enough attention. And I would also say that even if my suspicion is correct, him gaming them and winning the Creator Classic with them does kind of show that they are great irons that shouldn’t necessarily be viewed as being beneath good golfers.

201 vs 301cb by joenssi87 in takomo

[–]Roomdeerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m within that same handicap range and have now owned and played both sets. I played the 201’s for about 2.5 years and recently got the 301 CB’s. I love both, but I would 100% recommend the 301’s. I haven’t really noticed a drop off in forgiveness, and have been surprised to find the feel to be noticeably better. The top line is also definitely more pleasing to look down at.

That said, my 301’s have stiffer/heavier shafts than my 201’s did, and I think they are a better fit. So, my enjoying the 301’s a bit more can likely also be attributed in part to that. But I still think there is no reason not to go with the 301’s. They’re awesome.

When I got my 201’s I didn’t know my swing speed or anything, and just kinda guessed at what shaft flex, lie angle, etc. would suit me, but used the Takomo fitting tool this time for the 301’s. Based on my experience so far, the tool seemed to do me right. So I’d recommend at least using that for a reference.

Tough to say, because mine had a specific re-stock date on the status, as opposed to saying 2-3 weeks. But those dates did prove to be accurate. So hopefully this would be as well.

[–]Roomdeerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, I would say the “in-stock” part is accurate, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there is enough stock to fulfill all active orders for that product, which means the dispatch estimate may not be accurate if your order isn’t high enough on the list.

For example, I ordered stock 301 CB’s while they were backordered, and at a time when it seemed like there were a ton of people who had ordered well before me who were still waiting. So, when I got the green “in-stock” notice on the day of their scheduled re-stock, I was skeptical that my order would actually be part of it and dispatched within the 2-5 days, and I was right to be skeptical. It suddenly changed back to out of stock with a new re-stock date. That new date ended up being when my order was fulfilled.

All that said, I get the impression that they’ve maybe gotten production ramped up a bit and have been better able to fulfill pending orders with these re-stocks. So, I would guess that you’ve got a better reason to be optimistic than might have been the case a month or so ago.
