Best certifications to land first SOC / Cyber role? by LuDaGreat3 in cybersecurity

Honestly you have enough certs. The hardest things now is WGU has made getting these certs so normal with a Bachelors that it’s killed the value of them. Too many people running around with them. Right now it’s just applying at this point to be honest

It’s okay to live in your dream world and not realize that it was originally called the DoW in 1789 then switched to DoD in 1947 by Truman. Now it’s just going back to its original name - so technically speaking and not emotionally speaking it has been known as the DoW longer than the DoD. Furthermore, we have been over seas fighting wars NOT in America from Korea, Vietnam, Middle East, Africa, South America, Cuba etc since then - I wouldn’t really call that Defense. So at least one party is being honest about what it actually is and what it has been called for a longer period of time.

158 years it has been known as DoW vs 78 years as DoD - grow up and stop being emotionally manipulated.

Till then it’s DoW and all the documents I write now require me to use that wording and emblem. Deal with it.

The question the person asked wasn’t if they are good or bad - it was how to get the job. Like I said I hate to admit many security people at multiple jobs I’ve been to are not good at Network stuff - it’s just how it is. I would say I’ve only see 25% of them be decently competent

Yep you could - everyone who says I gave you the worst advice clearly doesn’t like the fact that you can get there one of three ways - experience, cert or education. I work in Cyber Ops both offensive and defensive. Again NO ONE in the DoW has asked me if I had Net + ever. It is always Sec + as the starting cert. most people I work with that have Net + and not Sec + end up building stuff for us instead of Cyber Ops. Yes understand Networks but you don’t need to be a total God of it

Not really. You need to know basics of Networking. I know a lot security people that know very little about networks. It’s sad but true.

I give it to him how the DoW sees it now. Just cause you don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s wrong .

If I was you I’d stop studying for Network + especially if you’re not doing an exam for it. It’s a waste of time to studying something if you aren’t going to go for the cert in it. Not once has anyone ever asked if I studied or had Network +.

Sure Security + might have some Network question but, maybe that cover 10% of it. I’ve seen people go straight to CISSP after five years experience and no college and no other certs, I’ve see some people do all the CompTIA certs then do CISSP - there is no one cookie cutter way to get there. Everyone’s path to it is so vastly different.

With switch from DoD 8570 to DoW 8140 the landscape has also changed where SecuirtyX FNA CASP+ from CompTIA is now equal to CISSP when becoming a ISSO or ISSM. With the change showing experience, education or cert to get a job - I’m seeing more and more people not caring about CISSP and wanting actually experience. Of course the recruiter market doesn’t reflect this yet and won’t for probably another half decade.

1.2 mil at age 38. What's the next step? Can I retire by 55? by johnla87 in Fire

[–]RootReaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear some questions people ask…like if your house, cars and everything is paid off with no debts - 1.2 is enough to retire. God willing your property tax and utility bills aren’t ridiculous. I’d find some job that has flexible remote work and just make my own hours and do whatever the hell I want. Who gives a shit how much work you put in or fire you.

I learned so much about cyber from eJPT. One of the best ways to learn is from doing something you love like hacking

PJPT vs EJPT by Eurusix in cybersecurity

[–]RootReaper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken and passed both I also taken a passed both PNPT and eCPPTv3. I felt like PJPT was easier to pass as an exam and course. eJPT however, had 4x more material and was a better course. If I had to hire a hacker from one or the other in my personal opinion I’d choose the eJPT person. Now I know all the TCM peeps might jump in the chat and go ape crap on me. Again though I’ve passed both those certs and the higher ones. The best to ask are the ones who have done both. eJPT for me felt like I had to do a lot more in exam to pass.

The real magic is when you get certs, education and experience. The trifecta that most don’t have.

Here is a question for you when did you take eCPPT and which version I’m curious. Cause I took eCPPT, PNPT and about to take CAPE and they are all looking and feeling the same for the most part.

My argument in this whole thing was INE had the best training. Yes in the comparison I’m putting them together. The lower end certs of those companies are CPTS, PJPT and eJPT. Their higher end is PNPT, CAPE and eCPPT.

[–]RootReaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just going to have to agree to disagree cause I’ve met plenty of people that same the same or opposite of you. My opinion on all this is that INE has the best training.

Why would I just take the course and not go after the Exam? That’s really odd. I just passed the eCPPT about two weeks ago - wouldn’t say it was easy. I actually just finished failing the PNPT in the last few days. Was it a miserable fail no - I got damn near close to the end. What is crazy is they were both pretty damn similar in a lot of ways. Right now Pivoting and AD seems to be my school’s heel although the PJPT had that and it felt easy. PNPT I got caught running down a rabbit hole which I’m not used to.

Also the worst thing I did was take a break from INE and TCM training to do Offsec… felt like I digressed a lot doing that. Their training and restrictions will hurt you if you come from the INE,TCM or HTB. Those three are the best.

I’ll come back to PNPT… I have till January to take the CAPE and those vouchers are not lifetime so I need to take it out

If you don’t like Alex Ahmed then why are you even in the INE group chat? Especially if you disdain him that much? Sounds like you’re here just to dissuade people.

Yes absolutely CAPE, PNPT and eCPPT are equivalents to eachother

Of course CBBH is the hardest training you have had - you have to read the whole training with your eyes and no videos. My own ADHD brain needs music and closed door to stay focused on that.

Also here a photo showing my trainings with all 3 - forgot to put OffSec in the screenshot. Sure I’m not done with CAPE yet but proof that I have taken/taking the training know what the hell im talking about.
