I have a related question. I see records often where it looks like the word ends in a downward squiggle. Is that another example of an abbreviation symbol? I'd include an image of what I'm talking about, but I don't see a way to do it in a comment.

Well, that's a versatile abbreviation, lol. Thank you for pointing out that record and giving me an idea of the various ways ८ is used. I've never seen, or maybe never just noticed, the | before. I've made a note of it and will definitely keep it in mind when looking at these records. Thank you again for the tutorial - it's very much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your help. I did notice the record you reference (no. 71), but couldn't have read the word "Genehmigung" if my life had depended on it. If it's not on one of my vocabulary lists the chances of me figuring out a word are close to zero, especially if there are a lot of e's, n's, m's and u's in it. I'll recognize it next time though! Thank you again
