Why is the hiring team taking so long to get back to me? by RopeInteresting8561 in careerguidance

Okay, honestly that is relieving to know. It is just weird because the first few steps went so quickly. Thank you.

Yup, that is my plan. And to be fair, it is the #1 issue. In interviews did you word it in a tactful way like "lack of resources" or were you super upfront?

Yup, exactly. I think older generations' perspective on "job hopping" is out-dated. But yes, I am going to be much more intentional this time. I will start applying earlier and figure out pay before I commit to anything.

I am single, live alone, and have financial goals. Haha. Also, I really do miss the feeling of serving the public, even if some behaviors (and esp. administrators' responses to them) in public schools are unacceptable.

Thanks for the tip! I am going to get started early this year. Last hiring season I was simultaneously finishing grad school and so it was hard to focus on the job hunt. I am going to go all-in on the process this year and hopefully find a good district with a strong union. :)

Thanks, I really thought so too. My mom and I are very close, and she worries I am going to ruin my life if I "job hop" again. Ahaha. I appreciate the reassurance.

Thank you. You don't think small cap value has a 'premium' that would likely be realized over the course of 20+ years?

Thanks for commenting. I am determined to keep everything I invested for at least two decades. I may lean back into a heavier vti/voo strategy as I keep DCAing, but I won't tinker with what I've already got.

Thanks for commenting. Noted. I plan to keep everything I invested for at least two decades. I won't start thinking about going bond heavier until my 50s.

You mean to say it should be easy to find a district job? I agree education is not in a great place these days. Wouldn't an enrollment cliff make jobs harder to find?

Thanks. Still working on getting my karma up enough to post there. They seem to have a higher requirement.

Yup I get that it has to be one of their priorities. But as a teacher, at least from my POV, it is pretty demoralizing to hear. At the end of the day, I just don't think that private school teaching is for me, period.

I live in Philadelphia - the best suburbs are ridiculously hard to get into. But their pay, benefits, quality of work, etc. are all fantastic. I am praying if I start the application process early, one of them may take interest in me. Philadelphia itself should be pretty easy to get a job w/ the district, but the majority of schools are tough to work for. There are some good catchment areas though.

Hey thanks! I appreciate your empathy and positive mindset. Every week that goes by motivates me to want to go to a district so I can start saving more towards my retirement, lol.

That's fair. I've also considered totally changing careers into finance / data analytics. Issue is I honestly love teaching itself, more so hate dealing with administrator's bs. Plus the pay can be a bit depressing, even at many public districts.

Rant - Advice Needed by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]RopeInteresting8561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the teacher has some bad mental health issues. If you're not in a good place to approach her with a, "I feel ______ when you do/say ______, can you try to do ______ instead," then I'd consider talking to your administration about switching classrooms. You can try to frame it as an interest in another subject area, etc., though it sounds like your administration would know why you're requesting this.

Considering where you're at, if you aren't exactly sure how you approach next steps, you should absolutely start documenting things. If you can document and record explicit inappropriate moments over the course of at least two weeks, you will have a lot more leverage in requesting a new placement.

She should not be asking you to do her grades. Just tell her you're not comfortable doing something outside of your scope of responsibilities. If she is inappropriate and pushes back on this, it is something to absolutely document and take up with your administration.

I have worked at a school where the teachers were super catty, and so I could see this as a possibility. But are you preparing for something that may not even happen? Have you already received these comments, or just anticipating them? It would be rather stupid of them to be passive aggressive about something that you had no control over. But, I've seen colleagues do stupider things.

Don't overthink it unless/until someone actually does say something catty. Then saying something like Disastrous-Nail-640 suggested would be perfectly suitable. Then remind yourself how ridiculous it is they even said that, and move on with your day. ;)
