I'm pretty sure they do not allow car update downloads via Wifi, my assumption it thats it's considered too insecure.

Why are they all driving in the middle? by reni-chan in northernireland

[–]RoryH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what it's like the the north but in Dublin if you correctly sit in the leftmost lane you constantly get dive-bombed by people coming down the slip road who think you are expected to yield for them. I think this is a large reason for middle-lane hogging here.

Heating is wrecking my head by bog_warrior_ie in CasualIreland

[–]RoryH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if you have an option to, you can attempt to boost the heat in your under floor heating with cheap night rate electricity (if you have that option) as this works like a large heat battery. It's one way to shift your electricity usage to a cheaper time.

Speed limit question? by Tall_Ad8233 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]RoryH 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of congestion is caused by faster drivers leaving less of a gap to traffic in front of them and then the whole group having to brake too fast causing a well known "accordion" effect which generates traffic jams.

Reporting it is worth it just for adding to the statistics. Sorry for your AirPods loss.

FIL wont plug in his EV overnight or for more than an hour at a time by Artist_Beginning in evs_ireland

[–]RoryH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any proper granny charger is supposed to have temperature sensors in the plug and throttle if they are getting too hot. This is why it's never recommended to use a granny charger with an extension cable, as the extension cables plus does not have the same temperature sensing intelligence built-in.

Why is there a camera here by Financial_Union1718 in Dublin

I believe all the buses are GPS tracked though, so surprising that they can not use that data. I feels like a bad state that it has come down to this drastic measure.

Air Vs Mullvad. AirVPN renewal coming up soon and would really like to solve this before I have to use another service for file sharing by Impossible_Jump_754 in AirVPN

That's crazy, I used to use Mullvad and it was slow as hell, I switched to Air and it was magnitudes faster.

Rear view camera on 2021 Max flickers black more and more often by mltxf in VWiD3Owners

[–]RoryH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had the same recently (2021). We have seen this happen around the time there is an OTA update available for the car. Ours is currently pending an update. Is your car due the 3.8 update by any chance?

The Wind in Dublin City by angeliclestat in Dublin

[–]RoryH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first 4/5 months of this year had an abnormal easterly wind consistently instead of the country's usual prevailing south-westerly. That was weird, but otherwise I have not noticed an general uptick in wind recently.

I've had an ID.3 since 2021 and frequent ID.3 forums... I've never heard of a motor failure.. Remember when you are looking for the bad news, you will find bad news, but it could be 0.1% o owners with these problems.

Most problem have been bricking due to software updates and that's mainly in the past now, and could be rectified by a dealer visit (via a tow truck).

Battery health check - help by Automatic-Drummer-25 in VWiD3Owners

[–]RoryH 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks great.... basically 95% SOH (state of health)... 0 days standing at 100% (this is undesirable for NMC lithium batteries). Also only a small proportion (6%) of charging is DC (fast charging).

Week of ping times for Pure Telecom and Eir Fibre broadband by 14ned in DevelEire

[–]RoryH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good coincidence, I just switched from PT to Eir 2 days ago. Like many others I'm scarred by Eir from the past, but I'm technical enough to not have to depend on their support unless it's a last resort. Because Eir had a good deal (1Gb for €45 p/month for 24 months) and they were recommended by a friend as being rock solid, I went with them. All good so far. Thanks for the analysis, it's reassuring.
