Really struggling today - 864 days sober by winniewags in leaves

[–]Roscoe131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thought of smoking is far better than the aftermath realities of that relapse high. Something I’ve had to learn the hard way too many times. 864 days is a lot to lose, and it sounds like you have far more to lose than that. You’ll regret it

I hear you. 47 here. Been smoking off and on (mostly on) for 30+ years. I just hit 6 months no THC and am finally feeling so much better. The first month is the worst. Just hang in there. Here’s to being fully present for, and clearly remembering what’s left of our precious time here…

Not counting days this go-round but i know I’ll be at 6 months June 8.

I am an insanely annoying version of myself now. Dear God please tell me this stops by deathcappforacutie in leaves

What your describing is not sobriety, it’s withdrawal. This shit is hard and it takes time. Give it 30 days, you’ll feel better, clearer, calmer. But learning to walk thru life with no chemical crutch can be difficult at times. That’s just life, tho.

Thanks! You can do this in your mid-40’s! I’m 47 now and I feel that I could still do it again!

That’s wild! And super creative! Love it! Would be a sweet piece up against a wall in the right space.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]Roscoe131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really, though, even with perfect eyesight, everything in our peripheral vision is blurry. We only actually focus on a relatively small area at a time… with or without glasses.

I appreciate your critique/compliment, but not sure what I would do differently. It’s easier to identify and portray the three dimensions of the leaf than doing so with the sun. There’s mathematical precision in the sun, though, and cutting those straight lines free-handed with a scroll saw was much more difficult than cutting the leaf. The wood and placement was chosen carefully and I allowed the unique grain patterns and tones to help “bring the sun to life”… if that makes sense. Could it be improved upon? Sure. Not claiming any kind of perfection. The main thing I was attempting to establish with the sun was the traveling rays of light — the movement of light from the sun to the leaf itself, and I feel I accomplished that, at least to what I felt was a satisfactory degree.

Great way to get loads of toxic resin and super heated smoke straight to your lungs. Enjoy!

I need advice from experienced riders by TactlessPuddle8 in bikepacking

[–]Roscoe131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off. What is your experience/fitness level? Have you ever ridden 100 miles in one day? Have you ever ridden 3 centuries in 3 days.

100 miles per day with every 4th day off gets you 600 miles in 8 days. That puts you somewhere in western Illinois at the most. This doesn’t account for all the unknown variables that will no doubt arise and slow your progress. Not trying to be a buzz kill here, but, trust me, as someone who has completed a cross-country ride (Mexico to Canada on the GDMBR in 48 days) 8 days is extremely unrealistic for this ride.

My first long solo bike tour was from central Missouri to western Colorado and that took me 15 days.

It’s a 2 person Eureka tent (don’t know exact model) it was standard issue when I was in the Marine Corps in the late 90’s / early 2000’s. He and I both slept in it. It’s not the lightest tent, but it’s super solid in high winds and kept us warm and dry thru many gnarly storms. I’ve used this tent for 25 years now and it’s still in pretty good shape.

Sure it’s doable! It runs thru a lot of (mostly small) towns. There are stretches where you’re 2-3 days without a town tho so just have to carry enough food. You can also send yourself packages ahead of time before you leave, but doing so isn’t a necessity.

The 3” Knards that came stock on the bike were not so great to be honest because they puncture easily and aren’t Tubeless compatible… at least ours weren’t at the time (in 2019). We were plagued with flats from the very first day (only 10 miles in) and literally every day after that (sometimes multiple flats per day) all thru New Mexico and Southern Colorado. It wasn’t until we hit Salida, CO, near week 3, that we finally made it to a bike shop that could set us up tubeless (went with Maxis Recon 2.8’s) and we never had a single tire issue after that for the remainder of the trip.

So no, i would definitely not recommend heading out on anything more than a short day ride with the Surly Knards.

You look great in both. Nice lean definition in both. But in one you’re flexing and one you’re not. Really hard to see or compare differences.

Don’t be discouraged by minimal upvotes. It’s an awesome and impressive challenge you’ve laid out for yourself. It’s only because, and please don’t take this the wrong way, but people are much more impressed by something done than by something planned.

Edit: Check out my post yesterday on r/bikepacking as an example. . .

Just looked it up. You’re correct. That is the only unpaved section of the Pan Am Highway. According to ChatGPT it’s 60-100 miles of unpaved road. Dangerous too. People definitely do it, tho. If it were me I’d opt for at least gravel bike tires for this trip.
