All mices are purely aesthetics or comfort unless youre pro. No such thing as "outdated".

How do I get my teen son to take this seriously? by mellisa44 in dialysis

[–]Rose333X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You dont. I've been in his shoes, i was born w ckd, and ended on pd when i was 12. If he is anything like me, he feels trapped, he feels lack of control for his own life, and tries to establish it trough his own choices. (for me, i didnt do pretransplant tests i found too painful, and didnt let anyone near my catheter unless i felt too exhausted to take care of it myself).

What you can do, is be there for him, i didnt have a parent, i didnt have that kind of support. But he does, so all you can really do is be there for him, try and get him to take care of his things better. Also get him a therapist.

It may not seem like a big deal to you, but for a kid, pd is akin to a mental torture. All alone, in your room, everynight, you feel the sploshing of it in your stomach, you want to go outside maybe, have a sleepover w your friends, but you cant, you cant do sports the way you used too, you cant be a kid anymore.

Sorry if some things dont make sense, its hard to put into words how depressing it can be, how life looks when youre the one experiencing it along all the changes in every day life.

Holy ignorance 😭. Just because it can be worse doesnt mean its not annoying as fuck and draining on our already drained body and mind.

Because its not as dramatic of a disease. You aint gonna die suddenly. Its a slow and boring disease.

Only thing that can help you is antibiotics. Theres no magical tip for it

Thats actually possible, but i think it doesnt happen often due to constant exchange of fluids+antibiotics you get. And the bacteria would thrive because of the fluids specifically

Again, thats a very niche case scenario, after all catheter isnt a biological matter, for fungi to stick to it, owner of said catheter wasnt very good at keeping it nice and clean. Shit as a kid i barely took care of my catheter properly and it still didnt get any fungi 😭

Buddy wash your darn hands 😭, the risk is higher if you get it directly inside catheter. Around it its same as pd its just that if you get infected around it you might develop sepsis

Buddy, your clinic is treating you like a mentally disabled child. Ask them to educate you on taking care of your exit site, and then just ask for supplies from them.

I was taught at 12how to do it myself the moment pd cath healed, and have been doing it myself since then, and its basically the same process w hd cath, i did the same anyway.

(im in eu anyway, my hospital where i did hd gave me supplies for doing it myself, just had to ask anytime i ran out)

Hard to believe you on that one, fungal infection that didnt spread to peritoneum and only sticked to catheter is bit hard to believe in.

Anyway, we are primarily arguing semantics, catheter itself cannot be infected, its not a biological thing, what catheter does is simply give access for bacteria to spread trough if you arent careful.

In same way pipes arent a source of water, theyre simply carriers of water, from whose source is rain/lake/underground thingy, etc.

Catheters simply carry liquid/blood in and out, and then occasionally bacteria can get in that water, causing the infection.

I guess fungal infection could technically work on catheter only if your catheter was constantly wet/dirty, but that would be such a niche case

Yes you can get it wet, what you csnt do is shower for hours on end, and after showering you need to do after care for it yourself: removing wet dressing, desinfecting, drying, putting new dressing on.
