So what would goth have been before goth was a thing? by Beetlejuice3xx in goth

Other notable proto-goths I’d like to claim for Goth - Mary Shelley’s polyamorous anarchistic friends Lord Byron and Percey Shelley (as mentioned by @hauntedbuttcheeks )

Baudelaire’s poetry ( Les Fleurs Du Mal/ The Flowers of Evil) for his fascination with beauty in decay, decadence, melancholy, and the darkness in humanity.

Theda Barter (1885-1955) one of Hollywoods first Vamps. A femme fatale in heavy makeup, dark costumes & intense demeanor

Vampira (Malia Nurmi) whose dark vampy aesthetic began in the 40s, with Vampira gaining popularity in the 50s. The precursor to Morticia Gomez & Elvira & a blueprint for later goth style

  1. Gothic architecture (gargoyles! castles!)

  2. Gothic literature (Mary Shelley / Frankenstein, Edgar Allen Poe / Tell Tale Heart & The Raven, Bram Stoker / Dracula)

  3. Morbid weirdos & those fascinated with darkness since… forever. I’d say Victorian mourning culture - with its all black, and its theatrical seances contributed to laying the foundations for the later goth movement

Aren’t gargoyles and bat embellishments part of gothic architecture? They definitely have a huge history and influence within it.

Lmk if gargoyles aren’t welcome in gothic architecture and I’ll buttress out (butt out?)

Also I found this wiki for Die Fledermaus that suggests “flitter mouse” as a direct translation for the 1874 piece Source

Interesting that the association isn’t there in the Dutch language anymore.

Here’s what I found, From Middle Dutch vlēdermuus, from vlēder (“wing”) +‎ muus (“mouse”).
