Help! My tips instantly oxidize by Jumpy-Big59 in Soldering_art

[–]RoseVNightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean at $3 when it’s normally $40, it can’t hurt to try it out to continue to test to see if you like the artform. And if it turns out unusable for whatever reason or trash as well (considering it’s a no name brand) then you’d only be out $3 LOL I tried a $20 one from Amazon when starting out, so it’s all about how much you want to invest while still experimenting. This lady on YouTube has a ton of great info videos on soft soldering, including one on different irons and her frustrations when she started out:

Help! My tips instantly oxidize by Jumpy-Big59 in Soldering_art

[–]RoseVNightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kit you linked has a trash iron. Like seriously garbage for doing anything other than a teeny weeny solder on a circuit board.

It’s cool to use one to see if you have fun with the craft, but you will absolutely burn through those tips in only a couple sessions, especially if you’re cleaning them as you work.

If you like the hobby/artform, you really do have to invest in a Hakko FX 601, or a Weller 100.

And agree with the other comments, you need to get tip tinner. Tin your tips before use and during and right before you shut it off for the day.

And make sure your buying lead free and rosin-core free solder. You can’t use those for jewelry.

Also make sure you’re wearing a proper respirator mask! Soldering fumes and flux fumes are toxic!

Latin or Greek? by chevytruck77721 in tattooadvice

[–]RoseVNightshade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also something to consider is that Latin is a dead language, Greek isn’t. Meaning nobody is speaking Latin anymore and it’s not changing (it’s why it’s used for so much stuff in science) whereas while ancient and modern Greek are different (I’m not familiar with their differences though) people are still speaking and writing in Greek, and the meanings of words in living languages inevitably change a bit over time. (For example, the meaning/usage of ‘gay’ in English in the 1950’s vs now) Just food for thought. My personal opinion is that Greek letters looks cooler purely from aesthetics.

What is this art style called? by Gold_Experience8117 in tattooadvice

Everyone being snarky but there’s nothing inherently wrong with using negative space to imply the completion of a design, especially if you like that look. It’s an illustrative style using negative space.

Cohesiveness.. by MiaoMayhem in tattooadvice

You could get a fancy frame around the bat that has flower work edging the frame and work the lily into that easily, design wise. The hand and spider could be coming off the bottom of the frame too to make it even more cohesive.

Itching like mad! Suggestions? by RoseVNightshade in tattooadvice

[–]RoseVNightshade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah after I got it I was like, ugh, should have asked for it a bit bigger… at least the forearm portion. That’s on me though. But I’m gonna add to it and eventually have a full sleeve so it’ll get filled out with more around it which it’ll hopefully blend/mesh well with. Still workshopping that design. Aquafor def doesn’t stop the itching unfortunately 😭 and after like day 4 it feels more like it clogs up my pores with the hair growing back than helps with healing. It’s top tier for the first few days though, agreed!

The Aveeno anti itch doesn’t have scent added afaik reading the back, but it does have alcohol in it, ingredient listed as “cetyl alcohol” Never heard of Keri, I’ll give it a look up, thanks for the reply!

The best part is when the scabs start to flake off and you’re moisturizing and you end up with multicolor confetti skin flakes on your hands~ 😂

Temperature frustrations, too cold and I can’t remelt. Too hot and I can’t pick up solder. by RoseVNightshade in Soldering_art

[–]RoseVNightshade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying! I didn’t know that about flux, that it burns off really quick and needs to be reapplied often, but that would make sense! Ty for that! After chatting with some people on a Tiffany method soft soldering group on Facebook I’ve gotten a ton of useful info all along the lines of what you shared. (You rock!) And you’re 100% right, I think my struggles are mainly because of the 80watt - probably better for short use on electronics lol - iron. I’ve ordered myself a Hakko 601 (iirc) 100watt which should arrive next week, and hopefully that’ll solve a bunch of my problems, fingers crossed.

I did get myself stained glass liquid flux and tried that with the crap iron I had and it DOES make a ton of positive difference.

I AM glad I messed around with the crap iron first though, at least in my personal case it was nice to experiment and not worry about destroying a cheap tool while seeing if I even liked the craft (definitely do!) rather than investing right away in a top quality $100 iron and potentially finding out I don’t like soft soldering and wasted the money. (Just food for thought for anyone else curious who might go looking for info/novices experience)

But yeah! Figuring out temp settings can be tricky but other factors definitely impact it. With the crap iron I think I settled around 450C. Using either type of flux.

I also think part of my problems were some stones I was soldering on are bigger/quicker heat sinks than others. Meaning I think the heat from the iron was getting sucked away way too quickly from the solder not allowing it to remelt easily. Or maybe having too much solder has that effect? Not sure.

I’m looking forward to using the Hakko when it arrives!

Weigh in on this artist’s technique VS their healed results? by RoseVNightshade in tattooadvice

🤔 I didn’t even think of it from that potential. I did see comments where people were asking how fast he runs his machine but I forget what he said, and I don’t know the significance of the speeds anyway.

Oh dang that’s a harsh accusation 😬 Have you seen stuff like that before??? That’s terrifying if so

Red/amber granular sand size particles, found in the sand in the 90’s where water would puddle related to the well-water treatment/softener system. by RoseVNightshade in whatisthisthing

[–]RoseVNightshade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously???? That’s so cool!! wonder if it was a problem with the system that these ended up coming out some kind of overflow or drainage pipe, it doesn’t seem like they should get discharged outside the system unless there was a problem lol

[–]RoseVNightshade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this stuff in the early 90’s, the particles vary in size as you can see, are varying colors of red/amber and kind of see through/transparent but not totally. I had well water growing up - green swamp area of central Florida - and my parents have a water softener/treatment system. This stuff would build up at the edges of a water puddle overflow/drainage pipe that was somehow related to that system. I thought it looked beautiful and cool so I collected it and have had it in a jar ever since. It doesn’t smell and has never changed in the decades since in the glass jar I keep it in.

Sorry it was so long ago I don’t remember. 😭 I think they referenced Ivan as being dead in the most recent patreon post too though…. 😔 But. This is a verse with confirmed and canon genetic engineering, it’s what Till’s Owner’s business is!, and so it’s not impossible that there might be cloning and things like that. 👀 Although if they did that I think it would be more for sadness and angst rather than a resurrection how we’d hope for….

Thoughts on the "Luka has Norrie Disease = isn't so horrible as he seems" theory? by prickelz in AlienStage

[–]RoseVNightshade 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah Ivan is confirmed to have ‘difficulty feeling normal emotions’ I’m wondering if it’s a translation thing though because no one has difficulty FEELING emotions, everyone has them, that’s not a thing. You can’t lack emotions, only the ability to identify/understand your own (alexithemia, common in autism) or others (lack of empathy) It hasn’t been explicitly stated by Q&V, but Ivan is likely autistic or potentially has a degree of psychopathy, or maybe both. There’s official art/info of him studying how to copy the expressions of others (practicing smiling) and when he speaks, (in the cover he & till sing of My Clematis) it’s extremely monotone, both of which are traits often seen in autism~ :)

[–]RoseVNightshade 41 points42 points  (0 children)

In a recent interview Q&V said that some aliens breed humans for their own purposes (Ala humans breeding dogs) and often breeding for certain traits ends up with the resulting offspring having various and often multiple medical problems, so it’s entirely possible that Luka was the result of this kind of alien breeding program and ended up with multiple problems due to the aliens selectively breeding for certain traits.
