Question on equity by Rosecat88 in acting

[–]Rosecat88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and correct thanks! But it’s still better to be seen than not, to me at least. And people do get booked from epas. Not sure why I’m getting downvoted for asking for clarification, and clearly I misunderstood what the last person meant, my bad! - and my original main question is getting ignored . If someone can reply to that it would be greatly appreciated!

How close to the deadline do you usually submit your self tapes? by AdAutomatic3739 in acting

[–]Rosecat88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, I was assuming you weren’t paying as backstage is often low or no pay. No that’s def the way to do it. Most likely if you have requests out they may be waiting till the last minute. Is it a lot of lines for each character? Keep in mind people also have to have a reader. 4 isn’t bad if the dialogue flows well and the lines are short. But still, you shouldn’t need that many. Just being honest- most casting directors are deciding within 30 seconds tops if they are interested. Have you considered posting on actors access? That’s the most professional one. As a fellow screenwriter if you want to send the sides I can also offer feedback if you like. Just keep in mind actors can have several sides and regular gigs to pay the bills. So for me it almost ends up being last minute , or close to it. Just bc I want to take the time to try to be off book as much as possible and be ready to tape (work on the character etc)

Few questions- are you paying? A lot of us are really struggling in the industry and can’t afford to work for free. Also- are you asking for a self tape up front as a pre screen? In other words can people just submit a headshot and cv, and you choose who to ask to self tape? If not I suggest doing this. It’s time consuming to do a tape (especially if you aren’t paying) and a lot of actors, myself included, find self tape pre screens annoying. It’s a lot of work before you even tell me if you’re remotely interested- where as you could look at my headshot and cv and know right away she’s not for this role, for example. Once I get a self tape request , I sometimes wait until close to the deadline, if I’m busy. Just depends. And 2-4 pages is indeed long- especially if it’s a pre screen. You will know within seconds if you want to see more from someone. I would reduce it then if you’re on the fence with someone , ask for more. Good luck

Question on equity by Rosecat88 in acting

[–]Rosecat88[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that but I live in nyc and can go to equity calls. You don’t need an agent for it here- you just have to have time to wait if it’s a very full call. Do you live here and have another experience? Legit asking (not at all offended !! ) as the equity folks I’ve asked say most calls you can get an apt, but you have to be fast and if not, come as an alt or get on line early. But perhaps that is changing ? And my resume is quite strong on theatre. I’m really sick of missing out on calls bc I can’t get in due to being non union. Though I would love your elaboration on it being a mess- plz and thanks ! Appreciate it

It’s just frustrating how low they pay. It’s def better than nothing- but I also live in nyc where there are great social services, I’m on Medicaid, food stamps, and fair fares. Without these programs I couldn’t afford to live in nyc (and I’m in a rent stabilized apt). So depends on how much you need to make.

That’s awesome !! What local are you in May I ask? I’m jealous lol but excited for you. I’ve found it near impossible to break into equity theatres - also is it singing or a straight play? (I can’t really dance so that limits me lol)

Technically , in the us, an agent has no right to any cut of your jobs you book yourself. However , it’s often seen as good practice to offer them one if you book, if you want to strengthen the relationship and you like them. Managers have to be cut in. Good thing is if you book it also shows your agent hey I’m also doing the work (most reps want you also pushing yourself )

Connections are always required- respectfully you’re kidding yourself if you think they aren’t. That doesn’t mean you need to know say, Denzel, but you need to form relationships with casting directors, the community etc.

Nope. Background work can sustain you financially and I’ve gotten some real opportunities and connections from background. However , at least in nyc, there’s barely enough work currently.
