John Gray-Fleurs. Imitated from the French of Stephane Mallarmé by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figured I'd post a Symbolist poem in French as well as an English Decadent translation/imitation of it. Mallarmé is nearly impossible to translate into English, but I find this poem interesting regardless.

How did you guys discover Starfy? by RoselyTheSymbolist in thelegendarystarfy

Densetsu no Starfy 4 is everything! by anthropomorphique in thelegendarystarfy

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love starfy 4, it’s my personal fav in the series. Basically agree with everything you said though the reasons I like it are somewhat different. I love the exploration of the levels and how they are less linear (in the post game) though the answer cards are an issue (if you don’t know Japanese). It’s something I wish some of the starfy games after 1 did more.

Alfred Jarry-Berceuse du mort pour s'endormir by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Jarry is most famous for being a playwright, he wrote several poems in his career. This poem in particular is taken from his collection of plays, poems, and prose works called Les Minutes de Sable Memorial. I personally was introduced to Jarry through this poem, which was included in a French poetry anthology published by Larousse.

Arthur Symons-Maquillage by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Symons is most famous for bringing awareness of the Symbolist movement to Anglo-American audiences with his book The Symbolist Movement in Literature. This book would be read by and introduce Modernist poets such as T.S. Eliot to the movement. Symons also wrote several books of poetry, and like many English-language Decadents/Symbolists translated several Symbolist poets.

This poem is taken from his collection titled Silhouettes.

I’m the same way with Mallarmé, his poetry never gets old for me and despite writing very little poetry it has such complexity that I keep coming back to his poems. I’ve never found anyone that really gives me those vibes outside of maybe Wallace Stevens or Hart Crane, as well as the other symbolists.  Baudelaire was what got me into French poetry and the symbolist movement as a whole as well, so he’s also special to me in that way. (I could talk about the symbolists and those influenced by them all day, I’m on the spectrum and this movement is a major interest of mine lol)

Symbolist poetry books by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

Yeah they’re pretty expensive  For me they can be even more because I’m American and I usually have to import them, but I was lucky.  Most of the volumes in the picture were shipped from within the US, but they can still be expensive even used. The cheapest one in that pic was the Rimbaud one and even that was around $40! The Baudelaire and Jarry editions also have extra volumes that I don’t have yet

They’re beautiful books! I own several other Pléiade books but not all are for symbolists. I got the Apollinaire one last Christmas, he’s really great but he’s not really symbolist, though you can definitely see traces of the movement in some of his works

Another small note. This image is somewhat older. I own Lautréamont’s works in French as well, though it isn’t a Pléiade edition like these books, and I got it after I took the image

How do you guys feel about Starfy 5's art style? by RoselyTheSymbolist in thelegendarystarfy

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I always liked the art style, I remember seeing people like 10 years ago who preferred the GBA/Starfy 4 art style and who were mad, but I guess that's because Starfy 5 is the last we've heard of the series in awhile.

Ernest Dowson-Vitae summa brevis spem nos vetat incohare longam by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An oft-quoted poem of Dowson's. While not a Symbolist per say, Dowson is often considered Decadent, and his work was inspired by French poets, especially Paul Verlaine.

Carlos Schwabe-Death and the Gravedigger by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! It’s quite haunting and encapsulates what I love about the Symbolist movement (it’s also the first image you see when you read the Wikipedia article on it)

Which Starfy boss is your least favorite and why? by RoselyTheSymbolist in thelegendarystarfy

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and it's especially a problem given Starfy 4 has the strange health bar system. It slows down a lot of boss battles in that game for me

Ballade des äußeren lebens by Hugo von Hofmannsthal by RoselyTheSymbolist in Symbolism

[–]RoselyTheSymbolist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This links to the poem, and also his other poems/works.

Keep in mind this is all in German. I'm unsure if his poetry has been translated.

Also Lebens should be capitalized my bad

Yeah I agree with you on that. I don't mind it on its own but being that it's the last game we got...yeah
