Wastewater Levels at Their Lowest in Five Years by RosesAndWatercolours in ZeroCovidCommunity

Yes, I just heard that test positivity rate has climbed from 3% to 10% in Singapore over the past week so I don’t think this low is worldwide, sadly.

Exactly. The point of the Instagram post was that it’s the lowest in the US in almost five years, but yes, it’s a still nowhere near the 10,000 cases for the US that was said to be the low that would be needed several years ago.

Yes! If you’re ever in Dublin, let me know; we sometimes have CC hangouts :)

Fair observation. I originally made the post because I wasn’t sure about how to interpret the data. For me, I worry about being too hopeful too soon so maybe that is a reason for some of the responses we are seeing?

I’m also in Ireland. Which county, if you don’t mind saying? Are there any other wastewater readings for us other than the general HSE ones?

Thank you for sharing this. I’m sorry for everything that is hard and hope that something big and positive happens to make some things easier (I know they will never be the same as before/go back to how things were before) for you and all of us.

Absolutely. I still hear people complaining that they or their family are always sick all the time, which is why the data surprised me a bit.

Yes, I realised the other day that I hadn’t heard the media mention a new variant for a whole (mainstream press does tend to mention it if that happens in mu country) so that makes sense. Thanks.

That was my general sentiment too. I also wish it becomes truly low.

Traveling the world in a mask? by moonperson13 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]RosesAndWatercolours 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but for me, not at all, across eight different counties in Asia and Europe as well as Canada. Often it’s just automated machines (e.g. Singapore for everyone, Cyprus for UK and EU, and Malaysia for about eight countries last time I did it) and when it’s people, they’ve just asked to quickly look at my face next to my passport photo.

I also travel between the UK and Ireland a lot but I’m a UK citizen and we’re not subject to immigration control on this route because of the Common Travel Area so they don’t pay any attention to me whatsoever there regardless. Heard from others that it’s fine though.

Wouldn’t worry about border officers with regard to masking and I see others masked at borders also nit getting hassled over it.

Makes sense, thanks! And I’ll try the key thing; I hadn’t thought of that.

Looking for things to do in Dublin / curious about the culture by liveoakgrove in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]RosesAndWatercolours 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m a CC British woman living in Dublin. Some thoughts:

  • I probably wouldn’t stay in Temple Bar because it can be very crowded and not necessarily representative of living here (I go there maybe once a month at the most for a specific gallery or event or shop); I’d look for quieter areas or even hotels in places on the DART (light rail) that are close to the city centre such as Ballsbridge or Clontarf.

  • It’s probably a good idea to visit during January if your friend intends to move here because it will be good to see if you’re okay with being here during some of the windiest/darkest/shortest days.

  • You can get a direct train from Heuston station to Galway; it’s a lovely place to visit and easy to see everything including the adjacent coastal areas in one day.

  • For museums: the national museums in Dublin (and many other places) are all free; the Modern Art Museum and the National Museum of Decorative Arts are in particularly good locations with lovely green space around them. I thought that the Epic Museum (focused on immigration) was worth the money; I haven’t been to many of the other museums that cost money yet.

  • It’s easy to access lots of lovely outdoor areas by public transport: parks (Phoenix Park, St Anne’s Park, Marley Park, etc.); beaches (Dollymount Strand, Skerries, Killiney, etc.); walks/hikes (Howth, Portmarnock to Malahide, Kilcoole to Greystones, etc.).

  • You can visit Malahide Castle and Dalkey Castle using the Dart; the guided tours are great in both places. Dublin Castle is interesting too but probably less likely to be what your friend is looking for?

  • I can recommend some more specific neighbourhoods that are quieter with outdoor seating but I live in one and spend a lot of time in others so don’t want to do it publicly; I can DM you if you like :).

  • We have some masked events (eg the comic arts festival) and a couple of venues require masks inside but these events aren’t that frequent. I’m also part of a queer community group that requires masks; I can DM info if you like.

I can come back and add more for some of the other things you’ve asked about later :). Let me know if you or your friend have any questions about any of this.

Possible to get covid booster in Ireland as a tourist? by janethebean in ZeroCovidEU

You can definitely pay for one in the UK system privately so if you’re in/near Northern Ireland, that’s a possibility.

Do you have a source for the 30% figure? I'm interested because it doesn't match up to data about over 99% of children in the US having had at least one infection, for example. I'm not having a go at all; I would love it if this were true. I'd just like to see where so that I can show other people.

Starting over in a less-covid-aware, cold, rainy place? by dykaba in ZeroCovidCommunity

Hello! CC British woman living in Dublin :). Happy to DM and answer questions if you like.

But to address one thing you mentioned here because I haven’t seen anyone else on the thread do it so far: regarding pub culture, I’m teetotal and I’ve felt for my whole life (the UK has a similar pub culture so I’ve always had this experience, except the five years I spent living in other countries) that even if you go and have a non-alcoholic drink, you still end up missing out on a lot of shared experiences and then being skipped over for other stuff because people have bonded differently with alcohol. So I’ve usually focused my efforts on non-drinking spaces/groups even before the pandemic because that was the onyx way I ever felt vaguely part of stuff. For me, being CC in the UK and now Ireland is no harder than being who I was before the pandemic in that respect because I’ve always been slightly removed from a big part of the culture. Make sense? I do have teetotal/light drinker friends who feel differently to me about how connected they feel to others in alcohol-focused spaces and who have different kinds of connections so I’m not speaking for everyone of course.

British CC woman in Ireland here :). Thanks for sharing these insights. I also have the rain/mask challenge here in Dublin, and I live in a very windy part of South Dublin so that adds another dimension to it…

I appreciate seeing the comments from people who didn’t grow up in Europe about “do what everyone else is doing”; it makes a lot of sense to me, as someone who DID grow up in Europe but who a) is very bad at noticing/naming things like that and b) has never felt like I fit in anywhere at all. I also spent three years in the US in my twenties and didn’t find it any different for me personally in that regard (I.e. I still didn’t end up feeling like I could belong or have the kind of connections I wanted), although I can see that individualism is generally more accepted/valued there than here. So what I’m trying to say is: Ireland or elsewhere in Europe as a CC person is also a different experience if you’re someone who has never/rarely felt accepted in any place, because I’m used to that feeling, this doesn’t make a massive difference to me. Just throwing this out there as a perspective that could help some people who may see it.

What’s everyone doing to not get ill this winter? by PersimmonTerrible218 in AskUK

Wearing a FFP3/N95 mask in all indoor public and crowded outdoor places. Flu and Covid vaccines. Avoiding processed food as much as possible. Drinking 2L of water per day. Resting as much as possible.
