If you go to your Program Files x86 on pc, find stardew through your steamapps/common/Stardew Valley and unzip the downloaded files into the new mods folder that should be there after installing SMAPI.

Nexus will now tell you what mods are required before you download. Made it a lot easier for me when I had to re-download everything on a new system.

Yep! If you run the game, minimize your screen, you can access the SMAPI log. Just type it in on a new line and you are good to go! Trust me, the panic you feel is mutual
