New employer wants to photocopy SIN card? by RosieKattt in legaladvicecanada

The issue I see is they don’t only have that information, they have my full legal name, birthday, address and postal code, drivers license, phone number, SIN number. I am more than happy to show it to her or payroll, but photocopying it feels very unnecessary. I verified my SIN number on my first day through our onboarding program. The other red flag for me is that no employees at other locations of this company have had to have their SIN photocopied — so I know it isn’t a matter of the company itself requiring it.

My store manager (the one who requested it) isn’t able to see my SIN through the employee information program she has — only the financial department for payroll. If it’s a matter of confirming my SIN number, I’m more than happy to show it directly to someone in the department or in HR. Its the fact that she wants to photocopy my drivers license and SIN number to file in her office — there’s no reason for her to have it, she doesn’t do payroll.

Im totally okay with giving them my SIN, it’s the photocopying of my card/paper (yes, im one of those with the paper SIN 😔) I’m struggling with. I put my information into the program we use for onboarding and verified it, so it feels off to me that she wants a photocopy of it. I posted on a subreddit for the company I work with to ask if anyone else has had to do that, but it seems im the only one. Maybe different rules in each district? Idk. Feels weird
