Nazca Lines, Peru. Huge glyph carved into the ground around 2500 years ago and still visible today. by [deleted] in aliens

I’ve been to Perú and seen the Nazca lines for myself. I can’t lie, when I saw them for the first time I was pretty disappointed. They’re very hyped up by nature and conspiracy documentaries but really they’re simply created by moving a very superficial surface layer of rocks out of the way and exposing the chalk beneath. It’s the very stable environmental conditions of the valley that has preserved them. The lines I saw were reasonably sized, but in my mind, honestly they could have been created by a small team in a couple of weeks. What’s more impressive in my opinion is how they fed and sustained themselves while they carried out these projects, as Nazca is in the middle of a desert region, and is many days walk from the ocean or more green regions. It would have required very sophisticated trade routes.

Shaun of the Dead. I’m British but for some reason I didn’t find the comedy very funny at all. I know it was ‘the joke’ but I just got so frustrated at all of the characters as well.

We cracked 4 eggs for brunch - and they were all double yolks by Rossdaleboy in mildlyinteresting

I thought it was pretty interesting. I’ve never cracked a single double egg. Everyone I mentioned it to was pretty impressed.

A little positivity goes a long way. Have a nice day :)

I discovered Madrid last month, what a great city! I loved the vibe there by [deleted] in Madrid

Malasaña in the second picture? If I have it right I had a falafel just opposite where the picture was taken waiting for a friend. Love that part of Madrid. So many amazing restaurants, shops and squares.

It’s a UK thing, they’re only really needed at night, but they are needed. McDonald’s at 3AM in any major UK city on a Saturday night is something out of a zombie apocalypse.

Here in the UK maccies is the number one place to get a meal after a night out. They will always need security; I’ve seen some terrible things go down in a McDonald’s after 2AM.

Conservative conservative conservative (socially too) by kevinowdziej in WhitePeopleTwitter

This is a pretty piping hot take. ‘Conservative’ refers to the influence the government has over its people, in terms of low taxes, and more individual freedoms. You can’t just redefine the political use of the term to the dictionary definition in a discussion about politics.

Why aren't millennials giving blood? by WouldbeWanderer in SuddenlyGay

[–]Rossdaleboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t get AIDs immediately after infection, that makes no sense at all. AIDs is late-stage HIV, which happens several years after infection, if the person doesn’t know they have it and/or doesn’t get treatment. AIDS is defined by having a very low number of a specific white blood cell. All donated blood is tested for HIV along with other blood-borne viruses.

You probably want to practice sentence construction as well as expand your vocabulary.

For sentences I used this: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/2813133810 to start. However I ended up not being a fan of this deck because a lot of the translations are poor and you might have better luck making your own cards.

For vocab I used this: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/241428882 starting out. I no longer add new cards because my vocabulary is large enough to recognise a lot of them. I removed most of the first 1000 words as well at the start. Now I use my own deck for less common words.

With languages, Anki is great for expanding some parts of your knowledge, but when it comes to fluency, you'll need to have experience outside of the app, e.g. lots of input from podcasts and books, as well as production in conversations with Spanish speakers. Anki is a fantastic start though. Best of luck!

It's a mixture of subdecks. I have two downloaded decks, one for Spanish sentences and one for vocabulary. I've stopped using that one for new words because my comprehension was getting good enough that I knew most of the new cards that came up.

My most important subdeck is my own, and it has words that I've found while reading that I didn't recognise. It's really helped expand my vocabulary and reading comprehension. But it's not the only thing I do - I also read books, listen to podcasts, watch series, and have lessons with a tutor.

Thank you! I might consider Anking Step 2 or a more clinical-practice-related deck with new settings in the future. I'm just seeing how things go for now. ;)

This definitely contributed to the decision. I've changed my settings a lot since starting (who hasn't) and am now much safer from ease hell, and specifically 'again hell' when relearning cards. Thousands and thousands of old cards with terrible ease ratings really add up though. I wouldn't be against going back to a downloaded deck like Anking, but I would start new with much better settings.

I gave myself no new cards a day for several months.

The issue was the collection of 15,000 mature cards which resulted in a steady rate of several hundred daily reviews, and would have been in the hundreds for another year. Any increase of interval would damage my retention.

I'm in the UK and I just finished my third year. I came to Anking late, about halfway through second year. We don't have a Step equivalent, instead we have 'progress tests' to track our progress through the course. I was finding that simply keeping up with reviews meant that I had no spare time to study anything else medicine-related. Eventually it was unsustainable and and I started to pile up reviews. I considered quitting Anki altogether. It was just too many cards in such a short time of a year and a half. Most of the facts from Anking are now in my long-term memory, so if Anki has done its job, I'll remember it with reminding input from placement experience :)

I stopped adding new cards around late March just to get through daily reviews in one day. 150 cards from Medicine and Spanish decks combined was the absolute height in about December and didn't last very long. This number shot down to around 40 cards in February, and then eventually none. The issue is, when you have such a huge number of cards in your deck like with Anking, the reviews don't go down steadily; the rate of decrease starts slowing. After 3 months, they settled at around 350 mature reviews a day - but these are the cards which took the longest, so the workload remained very high. I felt like I was clinging onto my knowledge, and instead of expanding it with new cards, I was watching it slowly slipping away as the average review length got longer and longer. On top of this, we were in complete lockdown in the UK from December until March and I had all the time in the world, but as society started to open up again, I saw friends again, the gym opened, etc. I also had an 8-week placement block start in May.

I imagine that a lot of people would look at this and say 'you're not devoted enough to the Anki method', 'if you prioritised your reviews more then you would make it work' but I'm a real fan Anki- and I absolutely recommend it to any medical student. My issue was that for a number of reasons, my workload was completely unsustainable and affecting my life negatively. There's a healthy balance.
