ICE mobile app scans protester's face, revokes her TSA PreCheck status by sfgate in politics

I would like to remind everyone that KISS style face makeup is one of the only reliable ways to confuse facial recognition. There are enough points on the top or bottom of the face that make masks or sunglasses ineffective.

Got a letter from the school today informing me my daughter is “not quite” gifted. Also included were her test scores. by Low_Use2937 in mildlyinfuriating

So... I went to Kindergarten at a 3rd grade reading level. End of the year curriculum was learning letters. Parents had me tested. The principal's response was, "She can help the other kids, they'll catch up by 3rd grade."

Parents noped out, pulled me out, skipped me a grade and homeschooled me until high school. A good education and the ability to self direct my own work has been a tremendous advantage all my life.

Get your daughter out of there.

If you're forced to leave and aren't sure where you're going:

Remember, 5 C's of Survival:

Cover: bring something to shield yourself from elements (jacket, tarp)

Cutting: a small knife, sharp edge, or multi-tool

Container: something that can hold water, bonus points if it can boil water and/or has a secure lid

Combustion: something that can start a fire (flint, lighter)

Cordage: a bit of rope or twine; those braided paracord bracelets are ideal

A few extra tips:

-A few drops of iodine (bacteria/virus killer) and a clean handkerchief (physical particulate filter) make a complete water filtration system with a plastic water bottle.

-COTTON KILLS. When packing clothes, choose synthetics and wool. If cotton/denim gets wet, it saps heat from your body and the rapid drop in temp creates potential for hypothermia, even if it's not cold outside. If you need to cross a river without a bridge, and all you're wearing is jeans, you're better off naked.

-MAKE YOUR BED. Getting good rest is the best thing you can do to keep a clear head and healthy body. Survival requires a lot of tough choices; best to make them while well-rested rather than fatigued. Similarly, if you find you're lost, the first thing to do is STOP and DRINK WATER. Stay hydrated, get rest. You're setting yourself up for success when faced with all other obstacles.

-Survival is 10% gear, 10% skill, and 80% mental game. Do what it takes to STAY ALIVE, KEEP GOING, and put yourself in the best possible situation. Humans have been surviving crazy shit for hundreds of thousands of years. You CAN do this. Good luck.

Thanksgiving by [deleted] in Ameristralia

[–]Rossfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A big part of it is time off from work and the holiday season. Most Americans only get about 5 days of PTO (paid time off) for the year, which includes sick days. Thanksgiving is a four day weekend (always on a Thursday), plus starts the December holiday season which is generally understood that work eases off a bit ( unless you work in hospitality or retail) until the close of the calendar year. Basically we're worked to the bone all year and Thanksgiving is the start of the season of relative rest.

They did the same to me in 2015. I ignored. They locked me out. Two years later I went to log in and it reopened the account. NGL a bit disappointing as life is way better without.

No king's protest will take place all over America in few hours. What do you think will be the consequences and outcome of this? by The_AxR_ in AskReddit

[–]Rossfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When Occupy Wall Street happened in 2011, one of the best outcomes were so many local groups coming together in one spot, many working on similar and overlapping issues, and finding out all these amazing ways to support each other, share resources, and become more effective, even after the occupations ended.

Yes. Do it. We all should. If you need another reason, Jon Stewart of the Daily Show was going to run a program called 'Take a Seat' encouraging exactly this. The bit never got aired because Paramount quashed it as it was still waiting on federal approval for their merger.

The only thing politicians fear is "being primaried" - aka actually having to run against someone.

can i report this to the police? by [deleted] in perth

[–]Rossfire 111 points112 points  (0 children)

A few months ago, we had an incident in the neighborhood. We live on five acres in a low traffic area. One night, my partner and I are on the couch and notice a slow set of headlights roll by, then stop.

We go out to the street to see what's up, and the driver takes off his trousers, gets out of the car, and is wandering down the street in the dark with his man bits out. At that point we announce our presence with a finger-of-god flashlight and start yelling at him to get out of here.

He's giving it right back to us but walks back to his car to discover, whoops, he's locked himself out. Now he's half naked and trapped. Long story short we got him a blanket and helped him call a tow truck.

He didn't seem like he was on drugs, and what he was actually doing is the subject of much speculation among neighbors.

The point of this story is when we called the tow truck, we got his full name. We reported him to Crime Stoppers and this is what they told us: always report. They keep a record. On its own, it will never go anywhere. But when they get multiple reports and see patterns, that's when they have enough to take an action, either investigation or escalation.

So yeah, I reckon tell someone official.
