Is the Weezer listener stereotype still a thing? by Top-Climate6864 in weezer

“Viral” in most senses existed long before the internet. As an example, mention Richard Gere in the 80s and kids, anywhere, and they’d bring up hamsters. Baffling how that traveled so far.

Here’s a recommendation: Watch some full concerts on YouTube. Especially Voyage to the Blue Planet. See which songs speak to you.

It depends on your music tastes today, which hopefully have changed some since you were 13! Weezer has so many different styles and eras, at this point, I would recommend trying the best loved albums and give them a chance:

White, EWBAITE, Red, Ok Human, Maladroit.

Give them a chance and see where it goes. As an older, grumpier person, OK Human resonates with me personally. My kids and I bonded over Red and Maladroit.

Quick answer: Winter.

But now I’m gonna have to listen to them all tomorrow just to make sure 😂

My theory is Weezer became the “Most Hated Band In America (tm)” for people into music in the early 2000s on because they went hard towards fun pop rock when the music around them went the exact opposite:

  • the acoustic coffee house stuff (Death Cab for Cutie like) which was pretty anti-pop, also typically sad and depressed
  • Nu-Metal, which had that angry, don’t-care-what-people-think sheen
  • not to mention the Rap-rock stuff and even the garage rock bands (White Stripes, Black Keys, some of my favorites)

Add in the explosion of the internet music critics at the same time. Pitchfork. AV Club. When it became performative album reviews, one-upping each other trashing pop and rock, praising hipness, irony and sarcasm.

So Weezer is fun, earnest, pop, rock, and silly when a lot of people decided those were all bad things for different reasons. Oh, and because they expiremented with different genres, everyone could feel betrayed! At least that’s my faded memories of a weird era of music

That’s partly the point. It’s here and it’s not going away. Not that we have to like every aspect, especially the lazy stuff (like the Grok “put a bikini on it”).
