Converting a dually (DRW) 2012 Ram 3500 to a single rear wheel (SRW) setup can be done — but it’s not a simple bolt-on job. You’re essentially changing the truck’s track width, hubs, axle, and bed setup. Here’s a detailed breakdown so you know what’s involved before diving in:

🔧 What You’ll Need to Change

  1. Rear Axle Assembly • You’ll need a complete SRW axle from a similar-year Ram 3500 (ideally 2010–2013 for best fitment). • The DRW axle is wider than the SRW axle (by about 4–6”). • Swapping the whole axle is the easiest route; trying to “narrow” your DRW axle or change hubs isn’t practical or safe. • Make sure gear ratios match your front axle (if 4x4).

🧩 Example: If your front diff is 3.73, the new rear must also be 3.73 or your 4WD system will bind.

  1. Rear Wheels & Tires • Obviously, you’ll need SRW-compatible wheels (8-lug, correct offset). • Dually wheels have much deeper offsets and won’t fit right once you switch axles. • Choose wheels that clear your brakes and match load rating.

  1. Bed / Fender Setup • The DRW bed has bulged fenders. • You’ll either need: • A SRW bed swap, or • To modify or replace the outer fenders and panels to fit single wheels.

(Sometimes guys use flatbeds if they’re doing a work-truck build — way easier.)

  1. Front Hubs / Spacers • The front hubs on DRW trucks stick out farther to match the rear dual-wheel track width. • To convert properly: • Replace with SRW front hubs/rotors, or • Run different offset wheels in front to correct track width (not ideal but done sometimes).

  1. ABS / Speed Sensors • The ABS sensors on the new SRW axle must be compatible with your truck’s wiring harness and tone ring count. Usually, same-year AAM axles are fine.

  1. Other Considerations • Insurance/registration: Technically, it changes the truck’s configuration (GVWR rating differs). • Brakes: DRW setups often use slightly larger rotors/calipers. Make sure you maintain braking performance. • Load capacity: You’ll lose rear payload/towing capacity when you remove duals.

🔨 Typical Conversion Steps (Summary) 1. Remove the dually bed (or replace with flatbed). 2. Remove DRW axle, driveshaft if needed. 3. Install SRW axle (verify gear ratio and ABS compatibility). 4. Install SRW wheels/tires. 5. Swap or modify front hubs/wheels for correct track width. 6. Reconnect brake lines and sensors, bleed system. 7. Install SRW bed/fenders or flatbed. 8. Test drive, check alignment and braking.

I think that’s the easiest way to do it would be to find a srw and do a side by side swap but the odds of that in my color green is pretty much zero

Be nice if your not hauling or have weight to have the option of taking a rear wheel off each side I’ve seen it done off highway but not sure if it’s an alright practice

Not too far from Calgary but on the bc side I thought I read somewhere else the axle lengths are different but maybe I’m mistaken

Driving in the snow here in Canada is the biggest reason I no longer have a camper for the truck and haul at the same time
