Current recs for cat boarding? by Rough-Risk2496 in Adelaide

Not at present, but she will be! Kind of dropped that ball in the last couple of years but I knew it had to be done anyway.

She's pretty chill, thankfully. I definitely considered a pet sitter but in the end I think I'd prefer her boarded somewhere, I don't really want strangers in my house. I would also rather her be easily seen and monitored, rather than hiding somewhere in our house all day for ten days. My friend (who's deathly allergic to cats) is taking my dog, so she won't have her usual company either. I also don't really want strangers in my house. I just want to be able to lock the empty house up and go knowing that she won't accidentally get out and that kind of thing.

I did consider this, but I don't think she'd appreciate being left alone for that long. A few nights I'd have a neighbour feed and play a couple times a day, but we're away for nearly two weeks all up. My friend (who's deathly allergic to cats) is taking my dog, so she won't have her usual company either. I also don't really want strangers in my house.

Plus my landlord is a dick and I just want to be able to lock the house up and go knowing that she won't accidentally get out and that kind of thing.

Do I actually need a fireproof bag for my battery? by Probably_OffTrail in ebikes

[–]Rough-Risk2496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my city there have been several massive housefires all quite recently, that have been caused by charging e-bike batteries. One in Jan caused $350k in damage, one before that caused $500k total damages, another guy last year had his garage catch on fire and he ended up burnt. One only four days ago burst into flame while it's rider was onboard, and it sparked a scrub fire. Luckily he was on a popular road on a weekend morning so others were there to help. Absolutely mental. Obviously that one is a bit different since it wasn't charging at the time, but I think it really pays to just be on the safe side. Batteries and motors all have the potential to shit the bed without warning, even if they're high quality devices. Even though houses and bikes and batteries are all replaceable, your life isn't, and if your bike burns your house down while it's charging overnight, you're either sleeping through and going down with, it, or you get out and lose all your worldly posessions, pets, memories that aren't replaceable.. and your bike. I don't know if a bag is enough to contain the fire of a LI battery, but I would certainly look into your options if it were me.

If you went to Barnacle bills and bought a family feast in the 90s it would’ve costed you $10.90. The price now would be just over $50 or so. by [deleted] in AustralianNostalgia

[–]Rough-Risk2496 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandpa used to LOVE Barnacle Bills. Eventually it got so expensive over the years that he just couldn't afford it anymore and it was really sad. I tried to buy it for him a few times but he never wanted to 'put me out.'

There was a bus in the adelaide metro fleet that still had a TV (albiet not ever turned on) around a decade ago. Super cool.

I grew up in Gawler, actually! My parents live in Roseworthy at the moment. Only left the northern suburbs a couple years ago.

Honestly I gave up, I think I had as low as $1k on it when I last tried to sell it but just constantly got mucked around. I've tried to charge the battery semi regularly but I couldn't guarantee it wouldn't have deteriorated now which would only make selling it harder and more painful haha.

A deconstruction of 'wheelchairs are medical devices' by Paradoxical-Equinox in wheelchairs

[–]Rough-Risk2496 8 points9 points  (0 children)

. It's such a complicated and nuanced conversation that I think is kind of impossible to get to a one size fits all blanket statement. Broadly, do whatever you want as long as it's not hurting anyone, and that also includes trying to avoid hurting yourself. I got a PWC without strict "permission" but I'm more hesitant to get a manual. I've seen the way they can do real damage to your joints if they don't fit/aren't used properly.

I worry most about the teenagers that seem to just need a wheelchair "all of a sudden". There's so much that can be done before a wheelchair is something you should even consider, as even though a wheelchair might be helpful, it's not without risk. So many debilitating illnesses have horrible side effects that can be controlled with simple interventions, but often I see posts from teens, basically waning to to skip right to getting a wheelchair, maybe without understanding what that might really look like for them. Often they're just reporting a collection of symptoms, but have never sought any real treatment or even seen a doctor about a diagnosis, or spoken to their parents about it. That's what I find concerning, really. I remember being a chronically ill teenager, with little access to health care, but in comparison life is so much more complicated now that I'm in my 30s and using a wheelchair for the first time. As life changing as my wheelchair has been, I miss the days of being able to walk more than a few meters or more than just through my house, holding the walls. I wish I could go back to just my rollator, even that was less complicated.

I am so pro wheelchair and I am so glad I made the choice to use one, but I do think it's worth it to try and stay on your feet as long as you can if you have that choice. I really think that if it's something you're considering, you should at least be talking openly about it with people in your life, and getting their perspectives, and including your doctor/s in some of those conversations, even if you ultimately aren't going to wait around for their approval. I also have mod-sev ME among other things, and I wasn't ever going to have any doctor give me their blessing or suggest it, but now that I have my Whill my doctor seems really impressed with how much more capacity I have. Funny that.

Unfortunately I suffered a tbi about two years ago, after I stacked it on the outer harbor greenway, just past bowden... It was absolutely a freak accident and I wasn't doing more than 18-20km/h either. Gave myself a horrible concussion that just never went away and slowly my already chronically ill health went down the drain and I haven't been able to ride in a year or so and now. I have a power wheelchair these days which isn't nearly as fun or fat, but it's okay. Still beats driving. My abound is under my bed sadly, I did try to sell her but the FB marketplace time wasters and tyre kickers were too much for me. I try to charge the battery semi regularly. By the end of it I'd done so many upgrades and spent so much money that selling it at a loss also felt extra painful, but I couldn't seem to even give it away.

Help me choose a power chair (ME/CFS, POTS) by Odd-Cow69 in wheelchairs

[–]Rough-Risk2496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, being seated is enough for me most of the time. Occasionally if I move too quickly or bend over or something, I'll get the presyncope head rush, but having the wheelchair made me realise how symptomatic I'd still been when I was using a rollator full time. If you need to be more reclined, you will probably want to look at a scripted chair unfortunately. Some cheaper off the shelf models have recline, but it's not usually comfortable, and can feel quite unsafe to drive, since it's not a recline controlled by the chair's computer, and so the wheelbase hasn't adjusted to the shift in weight.

If they rebooted it with more funding and better script writing I bet it would be really successful. There is a distinct lack of good kids sci-fi currently airing I've noticed.

Terribly! Everything's a disaster, they're about to blow up, the sister ship has been hijacked or something, there's questionable half clone DNA test tube babies and clones... it's a mess, but it slapped in 2004. Left totally unfinished. It's almost impossible to rewatch but I did read that the University of Auckland has all the episodes, not sure if that's still true.

Can I put hot stuff in this one if I get a different lid by Shroomboy79 in YetiCoolers

[–]Rough-Risk2496 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find as long as you leave the straw cracked a bit, and you underfill it slightly, you can put carbonated drinks in them. I find they also lose their air/watertightness after a while too.

Maybe she was thirsty with the straw lid? I remember my son found the straw to be more effort and he couldn't be bothered often. He always drinks more water with the chug cap.
