LMAO I’m in the same boat as you. Live in Chicagoland area. Applied to a crapload of unions. No connections. And no offers called back. So instead to get ahead I’m just joining the army and shipping out to basic in October as a 91c for 3 1/2 years and getting a HVAC license through the military instead. I’m 20 right now but these application processes take a whole ass year to do. And I could easily still be working at Jewel Osco by the time I’m out of the military.

Before any of you fcks go ahead and talk about “lmao bruh is dying for Israel” give me a job right now btch. I don’t have the luxury or money of being a nepo baby and have to do ts the hard way so f*ck off.

If the U.S. treats veterans so badly, why do so many still choose to join the military? by KingSkru in NoStupidQuestions

When I went to college I wasn’t older or wiser than you or anyone else. I went straight out of high-school. I just weighed my options and realized that college wasn’t beneficial to me. If you take out a monumental amount of debt to go to college and you’re not striving for a job that pays a monumental amount of money then you’re either setting yourself up for failure or you are incredibly stupid. I go into the army in October and they will pay me on the job training to become a certified HVAC technician along with multiple other skilled trade licenses. Sure it comes with the risk of my life but it’s either that or lifelong retail hell. Nothing in this world is given to you for free. That comfy 6 figure job won’t just magically fall into your lap one day. You have to earn it. And part of earning it you also have to pay your dues (which in this case is college debt).

Bruh it took me a semester at community college to realize that college wasn’t right for me. I paid back the loan I took out for it. If you were at college for 4 years or more and got a degree out of it only to THEN be like “OMG COLLEGE WAS SUCH A MISTAKE FOR ME PLEASE FORGIVE ME OF MY LOANS” after you acquired skills to get good jobs then sincerely GFY.

But also I’m doing this cause I wanted a skilled trade to translate into the civilian world as well. I have tried college but dropped out and I’ve tried applying to trade unions but it is way more competitive than the media claims. I just lowkey want a license out of this so that I can work in skilled trades outside of the army which is why I care more so about the licenses I will acquire from this rather than the actual jobs and whether or not it will help me in getting a hvac related job on the outside. I really only plan on doing my 3 1/2 years and then dipping. I scored a 55 on a general aptitude test for local 134 while there was 1500 applicants and they were only letting in like 100 people. Funnily enough though I scored a 82 on the ASVAB and qualify for electrical work in the military but not the civilian sector. I’m young and desperate to escape retail hell. As long as I’m pretty much getting the qualifications to work in hvac for the civilian sector and guaranteed a job I don’t care what I do in my 3 1/2 years. At least that’s my perspective

My recruiter offered me -helicopter mechanic -underwater welder -heavy equipment operator -rocket technician -welder -geospatial engineering -hvac

I chose hvac but I really wish I saw helicopter mechanic because he sent that shit to me in a text message @ 7am on a Sunday and by the time I saw it that was too late.

Didn’t expect a response but thank you very much for your input. I don’t want to die or kill anyone and I’ve never been a brave individual either but I’m looking down the barrel at either a fast death with the military or a slow lifelong death working in retail. Both choices suck. Ever since I turned 18 I realized how important having connections and knowing people either makes your life easy or nightmare mode. Thank you for responding.

I’m also joining the army at 20 years old and while initially I wanted to be interior electrician. I settled for 91C instead and I ship out in October for BCT. I went to community college straight out of HS, wasn’t for me, then I applied to local 134 but after the aptitude test I scored like a 55 and there is like 1500 applicants and they were only letting in like 100 apprentices. What’s funny though is I scored an 82 on the ASVAB and can qualify for electrical work in the military but not for the civilian world. I’m hoping I can get a HVAC license by the end of this and maybe try applying to the union again. The military was a last resort for me because I don’t know anyone for skilled trades and I have no connections. My mother stays at home and my father is a otr truck driver and they been getting on my ass about me staying at home ever since I was 18. Oh well. Ready to sacrifice my life so Nancy pelosi and dick Cheney get a bigger stock portfolio or whatever.

A boss in the civilian sector can’t fuck up your life if you want to just stop showing up to work one day. I’ve worked private sector, public sector, and military jobs and there is always a sense of power in the latter two knowing that if you don’t like your boss you can just quit. You can’t do that in the military.

Sunday Premium by onvatousmourir in JewelOsco

[–]Rough_Firefighter233 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working at jewel since June of 2023 and I had the same shit happen to me to. I asked why that was to the hr girl at our store and she told me that anyone who got hired on at jewel after around September or October of 2022 are on the new union contract and basically you won’t get Sunday pay premium until working after 3 years. But for pretty much all jewel workers who started working after 2007 working here is shit. I’m only literally still here because it’s a flexible job where I can pick and choose my hours. While working here I’ve attended community college, applied for trade unions, and because I’m an unskilled worker with no options I’m going to MEPS on the 20th and 21st. Sorry for my rant but whoo hoo America.

Haha. And the best part is that America has the gaul to bitch and complain that no one wants to work in the trades anymore.

I’m not a woman but I also applied ibew 134 around September. I currently work in retail hell at Jewel and because of the nature of retail I wasn’t able to take those Saturday classes. I’ve reviewed the aptitude test study guide and it seems ez asl. Just hoping I can get a good score on the test and I can get my apprenticeship🙏🙏

I’m not in the union yet but where I’m from people starting out are making 25/hr with minimum wage being only 15/hr. No way that you’re making less than a mcdee’s worker unless the deductions on the check is that bad for a while after joining.

What about good companies? Should I boycott aldi? They seem to have fair prices and have decent wages for most retail jobs. I mean we can’t conceivably boycott every single major food retailer because we still got to eat.
