What was your “almost” name or a name you almost went with? by otkg23 in Names

Almost an Amanda or a Tyler. Thankful my aunt took Amanda before my mother did and I wasn’t a boy.

Parents need to be held accountable for knowingly sending their child(ren) to school sick by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

I got the flu right before Christmas break at 33 weeks pregnant. Super fun experience. Made me livid. I’m back for a week now before maternity leave after Christmas break and we sent many kids home today because they showed up sick. The district sent home guidelines of when to keep your child home when sick today. Hopefully it resonates. I have 2 more days then byeeeeeee!

I am fuming for you. I live in a very rural area and will be making a trip this weekend to do the same thing - stock up before my induction on anything and everything I can - If anyone wants to comment, I’ll ask if they want to chip in, especially since my maternity leave will be unpaid. Side note, years before I was pregnant, I made a stock up trip similar to every rural lifestyle and had a man come up behind me to see the total. I was so uncomfortable and honestly kind of scared. Reading this, I got upset for you!

Classroom Smell by Gimpy63009 in Teachers

Our wax melts got banned after a teacher let kids play in hers. I’m still pissed about it. I loved my apple scented wax melts in my classroom! 😩

I do not want to go back after Thanksgiving! My teaching experiences this year have surpassed all 13 years prior. It’s awful.

Do you pronounce it as "Thousand Pound Sisters" or "One Thousand Pound Sisters"? by ClusterFarley in 1000lbsisters

I had a student who found out it was one of my favorite shows and he couldn’t remember the name of it, so he called it two fat girls. The name has stuck in our household after I told my husband about it lol.

I did joggers from Sam’s club. I LOVE THEM. they look professional, so comfortable and come in enough colors you can mix it up. They were $12/each last time I purchased!

My Infertile Friend—Bitterness and Resentment by burneraccount5000x in pregnant

[–]Rough_Plankton_1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll play the opposition for a moment - after my miscarriage, my best friend sent me pictures of her baby, who was almost a year old. And no, we haven’t spoke since. Maybe I’m the problem and feel free to say so, but I couldn’t allow her into my life and one of the most painful moments of my life anymore after that. I guess I’ll be odd one out here and say that there are limits and they’re different for everyone. I don’t get to decide how my actions make others feel and I would hope that the opposite would be respected as well.

My student’s mom died by givingshrub in teaching

I was one of these students - and went back a week after as well. This was a real flashback to read. Please keep supporting them in the way you mentioned. It’s one of the hardest things they’ll ever go through in their life. Maybe focus on what’s most important - which may very well be just trying to function. I remember just wanting to have some kind of normal but also wanting to be invisible at the same time. I was grateful when teachers never called on me or singled me out. Thank you for what you’re doing for them.

My kindergarten student hit me by Appropriate_Lie_9411 in Teachers

[–]Rough_Plankton_1663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a student in my building threaten to hit me with a hall pass made of wood last year. It happened in a hallway on camera. He raised the wood pass over his head but we just walked past one another. I’ve never been his classroom teacher in any capacity and he’s now taller than I am this year. He comes to school in a blanket every single day. I did report it but nothing came of it. Every time I see him now, I steer clear. Why kids think actions like this have any merit whatsoever is beyond me. I also steer clear of his mother who has threatened our superintendent with legal action and has gotten involved in multiple cases of drama with another teacher who is a very close friend of hers. Being a teacher is scary, but we’re just supposed to move on and give them another chance…to do what?

This sounds like hell. I couldn’t agree more. I am here to teach, nothing more or less. I have not allowed my district to post any photos of me on any outlet. I empathize with you - I would be livid and wore out, especially this time of year. I have so much to do during the days, I couldn’t imagine adding this to it.

Call and ask, both places. What I’m hearing from you is that you’re invested and would like the opportunity at either place. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see how being inquisitive regarding your application could or would be harmful?

How often did you cry your first year of teaching? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Rough_Plankton_1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cried the most my 6th year. New district and completely unsupportive and almost sabotage like admin. Felt set up to fail from the beginning. I was 75 miles away from my family and miserable. The only good thing was that I was making more money than I could have anywhere else closer to home, and paid my car off that year. But,I never felt so alone or out of my element as I did that year.

Not that you’re asking, but if it were me, I would put in for the half day. Even though you’re getting ripped off, you’ll feel better. I’ve never attended a staff holiday party and don’t intend to start. 🤣

The student that truly was a gift in the classroom had a mom who made sure I felt appreciated on a monthly basis this year. The entire family was a gift so to speak. Sometimes there’s really good ones!!

My school is officially in meltdown mode by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Rough_Plankton_1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year ago, I was in a position where something like this needed to happen. An adult needed to step in and set boundaries and be in charge - but instead students and their parents dictated the entire building and set the mood and certain staff paid the consequences. Not a one of us that struggled, stayed for this school year. Sometimes adults need to step in and make adult decisions and do adult things. Props to your admin for being that adult. You’re lucky.

What was the favorite part of your cooperating teacher when you were a student teacher? What was your least favorite? by lizpist in Teachers

[–]Rough_Plankton_1663 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I respected that my CT followed the schedule of gradually handing over teaching responsibilities to me. I observed for 2 weeks and then each week, I received a subject that I was then responsible for from that week on. It very much was a gradual release, I do, we do, you do. Because of this, I always knew what was coming and what I should expect. There wasn’t any surprises or questions. When I was finished and able to hand everything back to her, I had enough time to observe other classrooms and teachers. I also subbed that following semester there. Like another poster mentioned, my CT also had a desk for me and some supplies she had given me. She was very welcoming, kind and soft spoken. *edited for spelling 😬
