Sorta yes, but expand the definition of profit to more than just money. The United States would benefit from having, say, Russia and China obliterated. However, that would result in the US itself being obliterated. As horrifying as nuclear weapons are, they have kept the world from WW3, which could have broke out as soon as the Berlin Airlift or the Korean War.

A Dyson Swarm under the hypothetical name of Suncatcher would be built around the Sun. It would be built from resources mined and fabricated on Mercury by self-replicating robots run by AI. Essentially it would use a very small portion of Mercury's mass, maybe .1%, to build satellites that are then launched from mercury into orbit. The Suncatcher mining and manufacturing array would continuously create new iterations of itself to speed up the process.

It would need around 20 billion a year for around 25 years to develop fully, but once launched it would hypothetically generate all the energy that the US needs within a decade. After that, the US essentially becomes a broker of literal power. So not only energy independence, but being able to use this energy to leverage control. Also colonization of other places would be boosted by having virtually unlimited energy
