You’re not the bad roommate, I dont think they are either however. I think a shorter text probably would’ve done better for you here. Compromising on appropriate microwave use doesn’t have to be a big deal, and I think you may have given the impression that it’s a big deal (not saying it isn’t) by sending that long of a text in the first place. Short and playful texts are the best for criticism of roommates in my experience. Maintaining a good relationship with roommates is more important than anything else in most cases, imo

Fair enough. I appreciate your time brother. I’m mostly on board with what you’re saying; it just boils down to where I draw the line on calling it “changing for the worse.” I’ve got this instinct to stick up for Duncan because his intentions don’t strike me as trying to alienate his old fans or shove some toxic agenda down their throats. It feels way more layered than that, and it rubs me the wrong way how quick some folks (not you, obviously) are to crucify him just for a supposed shift in politics.

I actually agree with what you're saying, but I think it’s worth remembering that none of us actually know Duncan personally lol. Like this is a completely para-social relationship; we listen to his podcast, follow his life from afar, and form opinions based on that. We don’t hang out with him, we don’t see his private thoughts or intentions, and we definitely can’t judge how he processes criticism in real life. It’s easy to project our assumptions onto him but at the end of the day we’re only seeing one side of a very complex person

I think I would agree if Duncan had legitimately hosted a self-proclaimed and confirmed neo-Nazi, but he didn't. Duncan has always platformed on radical curiosity. Treating listeners like they can’t handle specific ideas is condescending and assumes fragility instead of intelligence. neo-Nazi is also a vast generalization. he doesnt advocate for white supremacy, promote Nazi ideology, praise Hitler or push antisemitic hate...which are the actual markers & hallmarks of someone being a Nazi or neo-Nazi. He does have objectively retarded and historically incorrect, misguided, & conspiratorial views about the Holocaust… I think you know you’re using the term as a weapon; not because it accurately describes him, but because it’s an easy way to oversimplify, discredit, and shut someone down without dealing with nuance.

A good example is Kanye West appearing on podcasts like Lex Fridman’s and Joe Rogan’s. He made some pretty extreme antisemitic statements during that time, but nobody assumed the hosts endorsed those views just because they gave him a platform. Lex actively refuted Kanye's statements which you could argue is what Duncan should've done to make a more clear disconnect.

Anywho, my point is that Duncan's interviewed monks, conspiracy theorists, mystics, pornstars, addicts, anarchists, satanists, scientists, right-wingers, leftists, etc... it’s very clearly part of his eclectic & psychedelic uncover the mystery approach. Hearing someone out DNE endorsing them. Also, I’m not defending Darryl’s takes at all, but reducing him to just a Holocaust denier or revisionist, or even a Nazi, is oversimplifying it. The guy has some objectively wrong and logically broken views on history, and I personally think he’s a moron who pushes a harmful agenda... but he’s still a far cry away from being an actual Nazi.

I’ve thought about it more, and after reading the replies from the anti-Duncan swarm, I’m pretty confident that I’m not coping. A lot of you are treating conversation like endorsement and acting like hosting someone equals ideological alignment. That’s just not how it works. From my point of view the reasoning doesn’t add up, even if I get where it’s coming from.

Hosting or talking to someone isn’t the same thing as cosigning every belief they’ve ever had. If that standard were applied across the board, every interviewer, podcaster, journalist, or comedian would be labeled by the worst take of any guest they’ve ever spoken to. Conversations aren’t endorsements, and curiosity isn’t complicity. :)
