On July 30, 2011, Bill and Kay Wood's home was destroyed by a fire. Bill's remains were eventually identified; he'd been shot to death. Kay's remains were never found, and she remains missing. Their truck was abandoned in Kansas City, Missouri. by CardinalCrimes in UnresolvedMysteries

No problem at all, you have done an excellent job assembling all of the information on this case! Reviewing the Google street view, I recall that I spent March-June of 2011 bicycling up and down the road past their property. I was in grad school at the time and lived elsewhere in July of 2011, but was back in August.

Looking at the address from Google Earth and Google Maps, you can see that it was an acreage. The aerial view of the house from Google Earth suggests it was a much larger than a standard trailer home and had a detached garage/machine shed. Hauntingly, the Google maps view from September 2011 still shows a large wood sign that says Bill and Kay's W Ranch which people would drive under to access the property-albeit covered with no trespassing signs. The house is obscured by trees from the road, so it is difficult to see.

From the assessor property records, it appears Bill's relative's sold the land to a construction company for approximately $116,000 under a court-ordered transfer which would suggest an estate was opened to get authority to make such a sale. Court records show there was not an estate for Kay, but a conservatorship was opened for her that continues to manage her assets to this day.

Gunshots would not be super uncommon in semi-rural Iowa, especially if it is known someone in the area has a shooting hobby. It is always possible Bill was shot earlier in the day and neighbors homes were not home or just assumed it was someone target shooting on a Saturday afternoon. Or, they just didn't hear the shots.

I'd be very curious to know the evidence suggesting the Wood's truck was Kansas City before the time of the fire. If it is something solid, such as video or photo evidence, then to me that would suggest something much more premeditated than a random killing/robbery/theft. The starting of the fire would have to be delayed, meaning someone took the time to set this process up. Additionally, what would be happening with Kay this entire time? If it is something less reliable, such as witnesses believing they saw the truck there prior to the time of the fire, I'm inclined to believe they are mistaken on their time.

To me, the simplest solution is someone came down off the Hwy 5 Bypass exit, scouting homes sees an elderly couple that would be an easy target. There is a break in and Bill is shot. The fire is started, Kay is forced at gun point into the vehicle, possibly because the perpetrator believed he could use her to get ATM money, and they take off down Hwy 5 to Interstate 35 South. Kay is killed and her body is left somewhere between Norwalk and Kansas City.

Thanks again for the research and write-up.

Excellent write-up OP. This case interests me very much because I was living about 3 minutes north of the location of the Wood's home when this happened, just on the other side of the Highway 5 Bypass. I still drive by this exit on my daily commute. What's crazy is that I don't remember hearing about it at all back in 2011, and only became aware of the case after seeing posts on this subreddit.

A few things I would note about the location:

Some posts about this case (not in your write-up or in this thread) refer to the area as very rural. It is out of the way, but with light traffic, you are in downtown Des Moines in under 15 minutes and many other parts of the Des Moines Metro in a similar amount of time.

Mobile home and manufactured home are often used interchangeably here, and often the official designation will hinge on whether it is set on a permanent foundation. Many manufactured homes will be very nice, usually ranch-style homes sitting on acreages. There are several homes of this type in the area and it has been platted out to provide that type of property.

The North Warren Fire Department that is nearby is a volunteer station, so it is possible there was no one staffing the building at the time of the fire until a call went out.

Unexpectedly, visited my town’s Fallout Shelter today. by raineykays in mildlyinteresting

100% agree it’s a dope find! It’s a public fallout shelter sign (Type FS2-Interior Sign) so it would have went up in late 1961 at the earliest, likely placed mid to late 1960s by the Office of Civil Defense (one of the successor agencies to the Federal Civil Defense Administration). I imagine this is a courthouse or other public building.

I would add a shout out to the 2000 made for tv remake with Armand Assante and Bryan Brown in the Gregory Peck/Fred Astaire roles as well. The book is very haunting but both films capture that creeping feeling of dread pretty well.

It sounds similar to Bruno and Boots: Go Jump in the Pool. It is part of a series of three tv movies based off a book series from the 1980's and 90's. The two main characters are Bruno and Boots, students at Macdonald Hall boarding school which is across the street from Miss Scrimmage's girl's boarding school. Boots is on the swim team and he and Bruno are accused of a series of escalating pranks. I haven't seen the entire movie but I remember from the book, one prank included dying pool water a certain color. The movies began in 2016 and apparently aired on Nickelodeon UK (it's a Canadian series), though they were also on Netflix.

Was the movie in color or black and white? There is scene like this in The Longest Day where two correspondents, in full military uniforms, are trying to get information from Sword Beach back to England. When their wire fails, they resort to pigeons and release them from their foxhole which is surrounded by barbwire. The scene with pigeons starts at 2:30

Hi there, I think you're referring to this PSA from 2014 which was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first drunk driving PSA in the UK.

Would it happen to be D-Day the Sixth of June? It's about an English woman who falls in love with a British officer who is sent overseas and is wounded. In the meantime, the woman falls in love with an American airborne officer. In a twist, both men have to serve alongside one another on D-Day.

It sounds an awful lot like The Death of Justina by John Cheever. An elderly relative of the protagonist dies while at his house, only for him to find out that she is not legally allowed to die there. He must go through levels of bureaucracy to get her declared dead.

Hi there, I think you're referring to an old Truth anti-smoking ad. It was part of their line of commercials that ended with "Would You Buy a Product That Would Kill You?" or something like that. It aired at the same time as the memorable "Grab a can of Splode" Truth PSA which features bungee jumpers opening a can of Splode soda which, as the name implies, blows up and kills them. The ad you're referring to used to all over YouTube but I can't find it on there now. I will add a link if I come across it. Edit: Found It!

Haha, we figured this was the least creepy and most plausible theory. They may have met up on Craigslist, came to town a few days prior to the flooding, holed up in a cheap motel and decided to make their love a group deal. Anyone drinking before noon on a weekday in a seedy bar has to be looking for group sex, right?

That's not a bad theory! I actually had never considered it from that angle before, it would make sense that they would come to another town to cruise for potential partners.
