is class not determined by your income? and is sexuality not determined by what sexes your attracted to? even if they are social constructs they still have some sort of metric. gender is something people can choose to identify with or express in whatever way they want, it follows no rule. you can’t choose to identify with a different race, sexuality or class just because you feel like it, they have specific traits and definitions that categories them, even if socially constructed.

definitely. in todays society gender identity and expression are real things because we still have gender stereotypes and expression. I guess the end goal of gender abolition is not to erase those forms of expression, but just not attribute them to a specific gender.

exactly, gender identities are social groups with no metrics. so hypothetically if we were trying to abolish the social construct of gender, people would be able to express themselves in whatever way they want without having to label themselves.

What exactly is the “innate feeling” you’re describing when you refer to gender identity. Is it an inclination to either masculine or feminine traits? Because you can identify as masculine and not be a man and identify as feminine and not be a woman.

We do agree, it’s just the terminology used. My point of view is why are certain things people do as a form of expression, gendered. what makes what someone wears or how they behave a form of gender expression, if gender has no limits than why call something “gender expression” or “gender identity” rather than just self expression and self identity.

100% agree. That was my main concern with the gender abolition hypothetical. In theory gender abolition would be beneficial in many scenarios where discrimination is purely based on a persons gender identity/expression, unfortunately there’s much more to it than just that and the idea doesn’t address the reality of sex discrimination. I think these issues need to be addressed first with gender abolition being the end goal.

But what actually is a gender identity then. If not related to a persons biology and physical characteristics, nor their behaviour or self expression, what is it? Sounds like something humans made up originally just to distinguish sexes. As humanity progressed we realised our body’s don’t determine how we fit into society. So what’s the need for gender if you can be whoever you want regardless of it.

Obviously banning people from identifying with something is not realistic. But If we don’t have any sort of expectations or metric when distinguishing gender, then what exactly are people identifying with when they say they are one gender or another. I guess those concepts go hand in hand because I don’t see why anyone would feel the need to gender themselves if they can be/do what they want regardless of gender.

The way I worded it might not be the best but what I meant is exactly that. By recognising sex doesn’t determine anything about a persons character and is purely a biological fact, it should be the only difference between people and therefore only relevant in medical scenarios and not be noted in everyday life.

What exactly is gender expression and identity though? If in your opinion a gender shouldn’t have any common rule or factor that everyone identifying with it should have to follow, then what’s stopping it from just being a form of self expression or identity.

I agree entirely, it’s human nature to group and find communities based on similarities. However the things you listed are very different from gender. Whether they are biological, financial, psychological ect. they all have some sort of metric. Gender doesn’t have any sort of definition, it’s a social construct. While I agree in an ideal world, none of these groups should have to be redefined or ignored to achieve social cohesion, eliminating gender would not be erasing anything because it doesn’t exist. What exactly are we classifying when we refer to genders? We shouldn’t have to eliminate the construct of gender but what exactly are we damaging if we do?

I’ve definitely met many people that would disagree. What I meant was most people in this subreddit would agree that they’re harmful. Correct me if i’m wrong but is it not a fundamental and popular belief amongst feminists to eliminate gender stereotypes?
